A sound card can improve your experience when it solves a specific problem: audible noise on the computer’s analog output, not enough clean volume for your headphones, or a connection or feature your current setup lacks. If your onboard audio is already quiet and loud enough, a separate card or USB DAC may make no noticeable difference.

What a sound card changes

A sound card is audio hardware that handles some or all of the conversion and input/output between a computer and your headphones, speakers, or microphone. It can be built into the motherboard, installed internally in a desktop, or provided by an external USB device. These categories do not represent fixed quality levels: implementation matters, and a separate device is not automatically better than onboard audio. SoundGuys explains the different forms a sound card can take.

For playback through analog headphones or speakers plugged into the PC, the computer’s analog output stage is part of the path. A USB headset with its own audio hardware uses its USB audio path instead, bypassing the PC’s analog sound output. In that case, changing the PC’s sound card is unlikely to change playback through the headset. Beyerdynamic describes these different audio paths.

When a separate sound device may help

You hear persistent noise or distortion

If hiss, hum, crackling, or distortion comes from the PC’s analog output and remains after checking the headphones, speakers, cable, and connection, an external DAC can bypass that output stage. A PCIe card is another possible route for a desktop, depending on the problem and its connections. Neither choice guarantees quieter sound; confirm that the PC output, rather than another part of the setup, is responsible first.

  • COMPACT LOW-PROFILE DESIGN - The card is 10.5 cm in length and comes with a half-height bracket to ensure compatibility with smaller cases and different build needs

Your headphones do not get loud enough cleanly

An external DAC/headphone amplifier may be useful if the current output cannot provide enough clean level for the headphones you use. The relevant question is whether your existing setup reaches a comfortable listening level without audible distortion—not simply whether a device is marketed as an amplifier. Puget Systems discusses an external DAC as a way to add audio capability to a workstation.

You need a connection or feature the PC lacks

A dedicated device can be worthwhile for a specific input, output, or other audio feature that the motherboard does not provide. An internal PCIe card is an option for a desktop with a compatible slot; a USB device is external and can bypass the PC’s analog output. Choose based on the connection and operating-system compatibility you need, not on the assumption that either format sounds better.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

When changing sound cards is unlikely to matter

  • Your analog output is already clean and sufficiently loud. The available sources do not establish that a separate device will create a large audible improvement in this situation.
  • You are using a USB headset with built-in audio. Its playback path does not use the PC’s analog sound output, so a PC sound-card swap is not the relevant fix.
  • You are judging by a codec label alone. A codec name or “dedicated” label does not establish how the complete motherboard implementation performs in use.
  • You expect better gaming performance by default. A sound-card change is not, by itself, evidence of better footsteps, microphone quality, or other game audio. Identify a specific limitation before buying.

Compare the audio paths before choosing

Keep the same headphones or speakers when comparing devices, and match listening levels as closely as possible. Check whether you are listening through an analog or USB connection, whether you hear noise, how much clean volume you need, and which connections and operating systems the device supports.

Option When it may fit Limit or check
Motherboard audio The current analog output is clean, loud enough, and has the connections you need. Motherboard implementations vary; a codec label alone does not establish real-world performance.
Internal PCIe sound card A desktop user needs particular analog connections or features. Requires a compatible slot and remains inside the PC, where electrical interference can matter.
External USB DAC/headphone amplifier You want to bypass the PC’s analog output, address a confirmed noise problem, add headphone drive, or gain a needed connection. Not an automatic audible upgrade; suitability depends on the source, headphones, and rest of the setup.
USB headset with built-in audio You want to use the headset’s own USB audio hardware. It bypasses the PC’s analog sound card, so replacing that card does not address the headset’s playback path.

Troubleshoot noise before buying

Crackling or noise does not prove that the sound card is at fault. Check the connected device, cable, port, and driver first. MSI’s official guidance recommends checking audio-driver installation and testing with an external speaker; if noise occurs at the motherboard’s audio port, it advises having the board evaluated by an authorized service center. See MSI’s audio-noise troubleshooting guidance.

  1. Cross-test the headphones or speakers. Try another known-working audio device on the same PC. If the symptom disappears, investigate the original headphones or speakers.
  2. Check the cable and connection. Reseat the plug and inspect the cable; try another cable if available.
  3. Compare available ports. If your desktop has front-panel and rear motherboard audio ports, test both. A difference can help narrow down where the problem occurs.
  4. Check the audio driver. Verify installation and use the current audio driver provided for your system by its manufacturer.
  5. Assess the motherboard port. If the noise persists at the motherboard audio output after these checks, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center before buying replacement hardware.

What measurements can—and cannot—tell you

Audio measurements depend on the measurement interface and electrical setup, including power, grounding, USB connection, and the surrounding computer. Igor’sLAB reports a setup-specific result of −92.4 dB(A) A-weighted noise with direct power from the Topping P50 in its measurement arrangement. That figure describes that setup; it is not a general specification for a category of sound cards or proof that one category is quieter. Read Igor’sLAB’s measurement discussion.

The available evidence does not establish how often listeners hear a difference or the average size of an upgrade. It also does not provide controlled blind comparisons across current onboard audio, PCIe cards, and external DACs. Treat claims of universal improvement, guaranteed lower noise, or lower latency as unproven unless they are supported by measurements or listening tests for the specific devices and setup.
