Yes, the PS5 remains a strong choice for most players in 2026, but “generation king” is a judgment rather than a proven ranking. Sony’s lineup now spans the standard disc PS5, the cheaper Digital Edition, and the higher-priced PS5 Pro. The right buy depends on whether you want physical games, how much you value game-specific image-quality upgrades, and whether your TV or monitor can show them.
PS5 models and U.S. prices in 2026

Sony positions PS5 Pro as the higher-performance member of the family. Its headline features include PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s AI-assisted image-upscaling technology, and Game Boost. These features do not mean every game looks or runs better in the same way: benefits depend on a game’s support and implementation.

Sony says Game Boost can apply to more than 8,500 compatible PS4 games. That is Sony’s stated compatibility figure, not a claim that every title receives the same improvement. Sony’s launch announcement explains the Pro’s positioning at PlayStation 5 Pro launch information.
Choose the standard PS5 if
- You want to spend less upfront than you would on PS5 Pro.
- You are satisfied with the standard PS5 experience and do not need game-specific Pro enhancements.
- You want a disc drive and value physical games or disc media.
Choose PS5 Pro if
- You are prepared to pay the premium for a model Sony positions around enhanced performance.
- You play titles that support Pro features and want to benefit from their implementation.
- Your display and viewing setup make image-quality improvements meaningful to you.
The supplied official materials do not establish a universal frame-rate or image-quality advantage across games, nor do they provide an independent head-to-head benchmark. Treat Pro support as a title-by-title consideration rather than a guarantee of a specific result.
Disc PS5 or Digital Edition?
At Sony’s 2026 U.S. recommended prices, the Digital Edition costs $50 less than the disc PS5. That saving makes sense if you buy games digitally and do not need to read discs. The disc model offers more flexibility for physical PS5 and PS4 games and disc media; whether that flexibility is worth the difference depends on how you actually buy and use games.

Sony describes a detachable disc-drive route for slim Digital Edition products. Compatibility and availability can depend on the exact console model and market, so verify that the drive works with the specific Digital Edition you plan to buy before relying on it as a future upgrade. Games, backward compatibility, and the PlayStation experience
A console’s value depends on the games you want to play, not only its specifications. Sony’s PS5 Pro Game Boost statement covers more than 8,500 compatible PS4 games, but that is a compatibility figure and not a measure of how many games receive a particular improvement. Before choosing Pro, check whether the games you care about support the features you want.
Sony highlights DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and fast loading as parts of the PS5 experience. The effect varies by game: developers decide how to implement controller feedback and audio, and not every title uses the features to the same degree. Sony’s Saros feature article provides a specific example of how one game uses PS5 and PS5 Pro features; it should not be read as a description of every game.
Storage: what you can expand and how
Sony’s guidance supports adding a compatible M.2 SSD to PS5, with expansion up to 8 TB. Compatibility matters: choose a drive that meets Sony’s requirements and follow its installation guidance. Sony announced the capacity support in its M.2 SSD expansion update.

Sony says PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage; it can be useful for storing or transferring games, while a compatible internal M.2 SSD is the relevant upgrade for playing PS5 games from expanded storage. Details are in Sony’s USB extended storage explanation.

Is the PS5 still worth buying?
For a buyer who wants a current PlayStation console, access to PS5 games, and a choice between disc and digital purchases, the PS5 family remains compelling. The standard disc console is the flexible pick if physical media matters; the Digital Edition is the lower-priced route if you are happy buying digitally; Pro is the premium option for players who specifically value supported enhancements.
“Generation king” cannot be established as an objective verdict from the available evidence: there is no independent head-to-head benchmark, market-share figure, or lifetime-sales comparison here. The case for PS5 is instead its range of models, backward-compatible game support as described by Sony, and a feature set whose value depends on the games and display you use.
Verdict
The standard PS5 is the sensible starting point for most buyers choosing within Sony’s family. Pick the disc model for physical-media flexibility, Digital Edition for the lower U.S. recommended price and all-digital use, or PS5 Pro if its higher cost is justified by the specific supported games and display experience you want. This makes PS5 a strong contender, not a proven generation-wide winner.
