Sony announced its U.S. Take Back Recycling Program on August 16, 2007, with a planned start date of September 15 and Waste Management Recycle America as its partner. The launch offered free drop-off recycling for Sony-branded products at participating centers; the program is still described by Sony as active, but current locations, product eligibility and any fees should be checked through Sony’s recycling locator.
What Sony announced in 2007
Sony’s August 16, 2007 announcement introduced a national U.S. consumer-electronics take-back initiative with WM Recycle America. Sony characterized it as the first U.S. national recycling initiative involving a major electronics manufacturer and a national waste-management company. That “first” description was Sony’s own characterization in the announcement.
The program was scheduled to begin September 15, 2007. At launch, consumers could bring Sony-branded products to 75 participating U.S. drop-off centers at no charge. Sony said other manufacturers’ products could be accepted at market prices, with fees possible depending on the materials. Mail-in shipping was also offered to selected WM Recycle America locations. Then-president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics Stan Glasgow described the rationale: “Providing the highest level of service and support doesn’t stop once a purchase is made. What the launch-era coverage goals meant
Sony and WM planned to expand from the initial 75 centers to at least 150 within a year, including at least one location in every state. They also set a goal of placing a collection location within 20 miles of 95% of the U.S. population. These were plans announced in 2007, not confirmation of present-day coverage. Does Sony still have a recycling program?
Yes. Sony’s current sustainability information says its U.S. Take Back Recycling Program continues. Sony describes collection through designated centers, mail-back and compliance channels. The original 2007 site count and expansion targets should not be used to infer how many centers operate today; Sony’s current information cited here does not state a national center count. How to find a current recycling option
- Open Sony’s current recycling information and use its recycling-center search to look for nearby options.
- Check the listing for the product and location you intend to use. Do not assume that a center accepts every Sony item or products from other brands.
- If you cannot find a local event or drop-off location, check whether your product and location qualify for mail-in recycling. Sony’s North America page says mail-in recycling may be available in that situation; eligibility is conditional. Sony North America recycling page
- Confirm instructions and any applicable fees before traveling or shipping the item.
The historical launch release set out a no-fee rule for Sony-branded products and market-price terms for other brands. Sony’s current pages cited here do not establish present-day fees or acceptance rules for non-Sony products, so the 2007 terms should not be treated as current policy.
What Sony reports collecting
Sony Electronics Inc. reports that its U.S. collection centers, mail-back and compliance channels collected approximately 5,479 metric tons (12.08 million pounds) of used consumer electronics in fiscal year 2025. Sony equates that amount to approximately 0.27 kilograms collected for each kilogram of electronics sold. Separately, Sony Group reports approximately 58,000 metric tons of end-of-life products collected worldwide in fiscal year 2025. Sony says the global figure was current as of July 2026, excludes some countries, includes batteries and packaging, and may reflect regional differences in counting. It is not the U.S. program total.
