What changed on PS5 and PS4?
Sony says its X integration stopped functioning on both consoles as of November 13, 2023; the timing may differ by region. The change ended the direct console connection, including linking an X account and viewing X-published content, trophies, and other gameplay-related activity through the integration. This was not the end of PlayStation captures or sharing in general. It was the end of the direct X connection. Sony’s other PlayStation social features, such as party invitations and Share Screen previews, are separate and were not described as replacements for console access to X. Sony’s September 2023 PS5 update announcement covers those features.
How to share PS5 captures through the PlayStation App
The PlayStation App provides a phone-based route for eligible PS5 captures. You can let the console upload captures automatically or upload them from Media Gallery. After downloading a capture to your phone, use a supported sharing app installed on that device.

Set up automatic uploads
- Link your PS5 to the PlayStation App and enable game captures in the app’s capture settings.
- On the PS5, use rest mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet in the console’s rest-mode settings so captures can upload.
- In the PlayStation App, open Library > Captures. Select a capture, download it to your mobile device, then choose Share > Share via to send it through another supported app.
Upload a capture manually
- On PS5, open Media Gallery and select an eligible screenshot or video.
- Choose Upload to PlayStation App.
- In the app, go to Library > Captures, download the capture to your phone, and use Share > Share via to select another supported app.
Sony’s PlayStation App capture instructions note that availability depends on country or region.
Which captures can the app upload?
- Videos: Gameplay videos must be under three minutes and non-4K. Sony supports videos up to 1920×1080.
- Screenshots: Eligible screenshots are those taken using the Create Menu or Create button shortcuts.
- Excluded captures: Trophy moments and Activity Challenge auto-captures are not included.
Captures remain available in the app for 14 days. Sony says you do not need a PlayStation Plus subscription to use this feature.

What if the capture option is missing?
- The console is not uploading automatically: Check that the PS5 is linked to the PlayStation App, game captures are enabled, and the console can connect to the internet in rest mode.
- A capture does not appear: Check that it meets Sony’s eligibility rules. Trophy moments and Activity Challenge auto-captures are excluded, and video files must be non-4K and under three minutes.
- The feature is unavailable: Sony makes app capture availability dependent on country or region.
- You want to post directly from the console to X: That direct integration ended; use the app-to-phone sharing route for eligible captures instead.
