Yes. Sonos Play is designed to join a Sonos system over Wi-Fi at home and switch to Bluetooth for listening away from it. It is rated for up to 24 hours of playback and IP67 protection, and its included charging base needs a separate USB-C PD wall adapter.

How Sonos Play connects at home and away

At home: Wi-Fi and the Sonos system

Connect Play to Wi-Fi through the Sonos app to use it as part of a Sonos system, including multiroom listening. Automatic Trueplay requires the Sonos app and Wi-Fi; some features also require internet access and the latest app on a compatible device. Sonos lists Wi-Fi 6 support on its US product page.

Away: Bluetooth

When Wi-Fi is unavailable, Play can stream from a Bluetooth-enabled device using Bluetooth 5.3. Sonos also documents Bluetooth grouping of up to four speakers: Play can act as the source and group with up to three additional Play or Move 2 speakers. That is distinct from Wi-Fi multiroom listening, which uses the Sonos system.

Apple devices and voice features

Sonos lists AirPlay 2 support for Apple devices running iOS 11.4 or later. Play is described as voice-enabled, but service availability depends on country and language; Alexa features also vary by location. Check the current listing for the services available where you live.

Battery life, water protection, and charging

Battery life and replacement

Sonos advertises up to 24 hours of uninterrupted playback and lists a 4800 mAh lithium-ion battery. Sonos Support identifies the battery as 35 Wh and says actual runtime varies with volume, connection type, settings, environment, pauses, and heat exposure. Treat 24 hours as a manufacturer maximum, not a guaranteed everyday result.

Sonos estimates battery lifespan at about five years or 750 charges and says a replacement battery can be purchased. This is Sonos’s estimate, not an independent durability test. Sonos also says leaving Play on its charging base long-term does not reduce battery lifespan.

IP67 applies to the speaker, not the base

Sonos rates the speaker IP67 and says it can be submerged in one metre of water for up to 30 minutes. The charging base is for indoor use and is not weather resistant, so keep the base out of wet or exposed locations.

What you need to charge it

The charging base is included, but its wall adapter is sold separately. Sonos requires a USB-C PD adapter rated at least 18 W; Support says Play accepts up to 45 W. With a 45 W adapter, Sonos estimates 60 minutes to reach 50% and about three hours for a full charge. Some 36 W chargers are supported at specified outputs, but charge more slowly. A deeply depleted battery may need extra time on power before Play can run from battery.

What comes in the box—and what does not

Sonos lists the charging base in the box. The separate USB-C PD adapter is an additional requirement, so check that you have a compatible one before relying on the base. Play also has a USB-C port that can charge a phone or accept an audio source through the separately sold Sonos Line-In Adapter. The port is not a built-in analog audio jack. Sonos also lists a separately sold Combo Adapter for Ethernet.

Using Play with other Sonos speakers

Bluetooth groups

For a Bluetooth group away from home, Sonos documents Play plus up to three additional Play or Move 2 speakers. This is the supported limit described by Sonos for direct Bluetooth grouping.

Home-theater surrounds

Sonos says two Plays can serve as surrounds with a compatible Sonos soundbar. Compatibility depends on the soundbar model; check Sonos Support’s current supported-model information before buying Play for that role.

Is Sonos Play the right kind of portable speaker?

Play is a fit for someone who wants a portable speaker that can also participate in a Wi-Fi-based Sonos setup, rather than a Bluetooth-only device. Before choosing it, consider the carry size, your expected runtime, the speaker’s IP67 rating versus the indoor-only base, and whether you need Wi-Fi multiroom, Bluetooth grouping, or a supported surround setup. For alternatives, compare manufacturer-rated battery life, charging equipment and adapter requirements, replacement-battery support, local price and availability, and system roles. Sonos characterizes Move 2 as larger with spacious stereo sound and Roam 2 as ultra-portable; those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results.
