Sonos has continued developing the app it launched in May 2024, but the available reporting does not establish that the previous app is returning. The redesign was meant to bring system controls and streaming services into one customizable experience; after launch, Sonos acknowledged serious problems and set out a recovery plan. Which app you can use now depends on your exact Sonos product and generation.
Why did Sonos replace its app?
On April 23, 2024, Sonos announced what it called its “most extensive app redesign ever,” with a release planned for May 7. The company said the new mobile and web experience would support existing S2 products, put streaming services and system controls on a customizable Home screen, and draw on more than 100 services. Those were Sonos’s descriptions of the planned experience, not independent findings about how well it worked. Sonos’s launch announcement
The new app launched on May 7. In the following months, Sonos acknowledged that the rollout had left users with significant problems. Its response centered on repairing and improving the new app, rather than announcing a return to the previous one.
What went wrong, and what did Sonos promise to fix?
July 2024: apology and repair plan
On July 25, 2024, then-CEO Patrick Spence apologized for the launch. “We know that too many of you have experienced significant problems with our new app which rolled out on May 7, and I want to begin by personally apologizing for disappointing you,” he wrote. Spence said fixing issues had delayed the earlier plan to restore missing functions quickly. Spence’s July 2024 letter

His planned work covered new-product setup; Music Library configuration, browsing, search, and playback; volume response; stability and error handling; alarms; playlist and queue editing; and settings. These were items in a 2024 plan, not proof that every item was delivered on its originally planned schedule. Spence also reported that Sonos had released software updates approximately every two weeks since May 7; that describes the cadence he reported at the time, not a current schedule.
October 2024: quality commitments and a dated progress figure

Sonos also tied executive annual bonuses for fiscal year October 2024 through September 2025 to improving app quality and rebuilding trust. In the same October update, the company said more than 80% of the app’s missing features had been reintroduced and that it expected almost 100% to be restored in the coming weeks. That percentage is Sonos’s October 2024 report; it is not a current measure of completion. Sonos’s October 2024 commitments
Has Sonos fixed the app?
The timeline shows a recovery effort, but it does not support a simple claim that the work is permanently finished. In a March 2026 TechRadar interview, CEO Tom Conrad said, “We just changed too much too fast, and made a bunch of tactical errors along the way.” He described the recovery as work on performance and reliability, restoration of baseline functionality, and improving the user experience. The interview also reported that further interface changes were possible; Conrad said, “We’re now at the place where we can update the app to return it to more conventional choices.” TechRadar’s March 2026 interview with Conrad

Can you still use the old Sonos app?
“Old app” can mean different things in Sonos’s ecosystem. The current compatibility guidance distinguishes the latest Sonos app from S1 Controller, and not every product has the same requirements. Sonos lists devices in three groups:

The documented response to the 2024 rollout is continued development of the new app, alongside S1 Controller support for products Sonos identifies as compatible. The cited announcements and later interview do not establish that the previous app is coming back. Before choosing or switching an app, verify each product’s compatibility by model and generation in Sonos’s current guidance.
