The Sonos Beam Ultra is a compact, premium soundbar that brings reported native 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos, HDMI eARC, and Sonos multiroom features to a smaller footprint than the Arc Ultra. It makes the strongest case for buyers who want a room-filling soundbar and may add compatible Sonos speakers later; its value is less clear if you need HDMI passthrough, have limited space for upward-firing drivers, or want bass-heavy sound without buying a subwoofer.

What the Beam Ultra is—and what Sonos 27 adds

Beam Ultra sits between the Beam (Gen 2) and Arc Ultra in Sonos’s soundbar range by reported US review price and size. EFTM lists its dimensions as 750 × 105 × 65 mm and its weight as 2.88 kg. It reports nine Class-D digital amplifiers, five tweeters and four low-profile woofers arranged in a 7.1.2 configuration. SlashGear also describes native 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos and two upward-firing tweeters. These are review-reported specifications, not independent laboratory measurements.

Sonos 27 is the software platform and ecosystem story behind the product, rather than a new sound format. Sonos describes Sonos Fabric as the way its products link for group playback, stereo pairing and headphone linking; it is Sonos terminology, not an independent audio standard. In a September 2026 interview, Sonos senior director of product development Brandon Holley described the company’s direction this way: “For years, people have seen us as a speaker company, but what we actually have been building is an audio operating system.” That is Sonos’s product strategy, not proof of a particular sound-quality improvement. What Hi-Fi?’s September 2026 interview discusses the platform naming and strategy.

How it sounds, and what Dolby Atmos depends on

EFTM’s reviewer found the sound larger than expected from the enclosure, with enough volume and accuracy across the soundstage for that listening setup. The reviewer also reported a stronger surround impression after adding Sonos One speakers. These are listening impressions, not a guarantee that every room or program will sound the same.

#1 Best Overall
Sonos Beam Ultra Soundbar with Dolby Atmos and Multiroom Audio - Black
  • 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos with upward-firing drivers.
  • Clear dialogue and AI-powered Speech Enhancement.
  • Low-profile design blends into the room.
  • Wider soundstage with clearer separation.
  • Trueplay tunes sound for your room and setup.

Atmos height effects rely on the soundbar directing sound upward to reflect off the ceiling; side-channel effects rely in part on reflections from walls. Ceiling height, room shape, placement and the recording all affect what reaches the listener. The soundbar cannot create height information that is absent from a soundtrack. Actual Atmos playback also depends on the television, streaming device, service, title and subscription plan. SlashGear notes that Trueplay room tuning can help adapt playback to a space, but it cannot remove those physical and content limitations.

Leave the upward-facing drivers a reasonably clear path to the ceiling if you want their intended effect. A shelf or overhang close above the bar may interfere; SlashGear reports a mode for limited overhead clearance, but placement still matters. Before buying, check the bar’s 750 mm width against the cabinet and confirm that the television stand or furniture will not obstruct it.

Sonos Beam Ultra $699 (SlashGear, September 22, 2026) 7.1.2 (SlashGear and EFTM, September 2026) Buyers seeking more reported channels and expansion options in a compact bar.
Sonos Arc Ultra $1,099 (SlashGear, September 22, 2026) 9.1.4 (SlashGear, September 2026) Buyers willing to spend more and accommodate a larger, higher-tier bar.

Connections and setup

EFTM reports HDMI eARC, USB-C and Bluetooth 5.3; SlashGear also reports Wi-Fi 6. The reviewers say there is no HDMI passthrough, so the Beam Ultra is not a substitute for a receiver or a soundbar that routes video from additional HDMI sources. Check that the TV has an available HDMI eARC connection if that is how you intend to connect it.

EFTM says optical audio requires a separately sold adapter. Check Sonos’s current setup guidance and adapter compatibility with your television before relying on an optical connection. The reviews describe setup through the Sonos app as straightforward, but network conditions and television configuration can affect the experience.

Sonos 27 features: what was available and what was planned

Sonos said rollout of Sonos 27 began on September 8, 2026, as a free update for Sonos S2 products, with feature availability varying by product. Its announcement distinguished launch features from Early Access and roadmap items; the states below reflect that announcement, not a guarantee of present availability on every device.

  • Available at launch: new app navigation and portable surrounds.
  • Early Access: Sonos 27mcp; headphone linking with Ace Ultra was announced to arrive with Ace Ultra on September 29, 2026; Sonos 27voice was described as a later-fall Early Access feature.
  • Planned: Sonos Custom Agents were targeted for 2027.

The same announcement said Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra were available for pre-order, with general availability beginning September 29, 2026. That announced date has passed, but it does not establish current stock in a particular country. Check the current product and software status for your region before treating any feature or pairing as available. Sonos’s September 8, 2026 announcement lists the rollout details.

Adding surrounds, bass or headphones

Beam Ultra can be used on its own; additions are optional and increase the system cost. EFTM’s reviewer found Sonos One surrounds improved the surround impression and found a subwoofer made a more noticeable difference for music and that listener’s bass preference. Your priorities, room and budget may lead to a different choice.

  • Rear surrounds: SlashGear lists Era 300, Era 100, Sonos One, Sonos One SL, Sonos Five and Symfonisk Gen 2 among paired rear-speaker options, and reports Sonos Play and Move 2 portable speakers as surround options through Sonos Fabric. Confirm exact model-generation support and current pairing instructions before buying.
  • More bass: SlashGear names Sonos Sub and Sub Mini as options. A sub is most relevant if you want stronger low-frequency impact; it is not required to use the soundbar.
  • Headphone listening: Ace Ultra is relevant if you want to explore Sonos’s TV Audio Swap and headphone-linking ecosystem. The September 2026 announcement identified headphone linking as Early Access, so verify its current status and supported combinations.

These additions make most sense for someone who values a Sonos system across rooms or wants to build surround sound gradually. If you only need TV audio from one compact bar, weigh that ecosystem flexibility against the price of adding speakers and a sub.

Verdict: who should buy the Sonos Beam Ultra?

Beam Ultra is a strong fit for buyers who want a compact Sonos bar with reported 7.1.2 Atmos capability, a route to wireless expansion, and an app-based multiroom system. Its main compromises are the premium price over Beam Gen 2, the dependence of Atmos on room and content, and the lack of HDMI passthrough. Buyers who prioritize deeper bass should budget for an optional sub, while those with a cramped shelf or obstructed ceiling path should consider whether the placement suits upward-firing drivers.

For the September 2026 US review prices, Beam Ultra occupies the middle ground between Beam Gen 2 and Arc Ultra. Whether that middle ground is worthwhile depends on fit, compatible connections and how much value you place on Sonos expansion—not the Sonos 27 label by itself.
