Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds if you want a race-focused kart game built around mid-race world changes, vehicle and gadget customization, and the option to play beyond Nintendo Switch 2. Choose Mario Kart World if you want connected courses, a Free Roam mode, Nintendo characters, and online races of up to 24 players—and have or plan to get a Nintendo Switch 2. Those differences describe their features, not which game handles or performs better; there has been no controlled head-to-head gameplay comparison.
How their races are structured
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds shifts between worlds
CrossWorlds uses Travel Rings to send racers into another world during a race. SEGA describes it as racing “across land, sea, air, and space”; that is promotional wording for the game’s settings, not an independent judgment of the racing experience. SEGA’s announcement describes the feature.
Mario Kart World links courses with roads
Mario Kart World connects courses by roads across a larger world. The design makes the surrounding world part of how its races fit together, rather than using Travel Rings to shift racers between settings. Nintendo’s product page describes the game as “The whole world is your racetrack.” Nintendo’s listing details the game’s modes and platform.

What you can do beyond a standard race
The listed modes point to different kinds of variety. CrossWorlds offers Grand Prix, Race Park, World Match, and Time Trials. Mario Kart World offers Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle, and Free Roam. Nintendo describes Free Roam as a way to explore at your own pace, so Mario Kart World is the clearer choice if open-ended exploration is a priority. Nintendo’s CrossWorlds listing and its Mario Kart World listing provide the mode details.

Customization versus exploration
CrossWorlds emphasizes vehicle and gadget choices
Nintendo’s undated CrossWorlds product listing, accessed in 2026, describes 45 unique original vehicles and 70 different gadgets. That makes customization a concrete reason to consider CrossWorlds if you want choices to shape your setup.
Mario Kart World emphasizes roaming its connected world
Mario Kart World’s distinct option is Free Roam, where players can explore at their own pace. The cited product information establishes that mode, but does not make a directly comparable count of vehicles or gadgets. Pick based on whether customization or unhurried exploration sounds more appealing; the feature lists alone do not establish which game is more enjoyable.

Mario Kart World’s post-launch update
Nintendo’s September 9, 2026 notice says version 1.8.0 added ten Super Mario Kart-inspired courses to certain modes and two additional Knockout Tour routes. The notice establishes those additions; it does not say that every mode includes the new courses. See Nintendo’s version 1.8.0 update notice for the details.

- Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds if Travel Rings, vehicle and gadget customization, or playing on a platform other than Switch 2 matter most to you.
- Choose Mario Kart World if you want Free Roam, courses connected by roads, Nintendo characters, or the listed online capacity of up to 24 players—and you have access to Switch 2.
- Compare modes before choosing on online play: the published figures are up to 12 for CrossWorlds World Match and up to 24 for Mario Kart World online, but player limits do not establish how the games feel or how well their online services work.
- Do not choose on assumed performance or handling: the cited official feature descriptions do not provide a controlled comparison of frame rates, graphics, controls, or overall quality.
If you are weighing “Should I get Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds or Mario Kart World?”, start with the platform you own, then decide whether Travel Rings and customization or Free Roam and a connected world better match how you want to play.
