If your iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T still has cellular service, install iOS 27.0.1 and check for the carrier settings update. Those updates are intended to help prevent a reported failure. If the phone has already lost service, Apple says a software update cannot restore it; contact Apple or AT&T about a replacement.
What is happening to some iPhone 18 Pro Max phones?
Apple confirmed an issue affecting a “small number” of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T in the United States. It may cause a phone to lose service and become unable to make calls. AT&T warns that calls, data, texts, and 911 calls may be affected on some phones. Apple has not provided a verified incident count or percentage.
Apple’s statement, reported by 9to5Mac on October 2, 2026, says iOS 27.0.1 and an AT&T carrier settings update are intended to help prevent the issue from occurring.

- Install iOS 27.0.1. On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts if the update is available. Apple strongly encourages iPhone 18 Pro Max owners to update.
- Check for the carrier settings update. Go to Settings > General > About. AT&T says the update is rolling out automatically in the days following its October 2, 2026 support-page update; follow any prompt that appears.
AT&T’s instructions and symptom warning are on its support page. The updates are preventive: Apple has not said that installing them will recover a phone that has already lost service.

What to do if the iPhone has already lost service
Contact Apple Support or AT&T, or visit an Apple Store or AT&T location, to arrange help. Apple says an affected device that has already lost service cannot have service reactivated by a software update and must be replaced. Its guidance does not establish that every replacement will be free, so ask Apple or AT&T about the applicable process and terms.
Restarting the phone, checking signal, turning Airplane Mode off, or checking the SIM are among AT&T’s general troubleshooting suggestions. Those steps are not a substitute for Apple’s replacement guidance if this specific failure has already left the device without service.

What SOS or SOS only means
Apple’s general explanation is that SOS or SOS only means the iPhone is not connected to its cellular network. Emergency calls may still be possible through other carrier networks, but that status is not a guarantee that a 911 call will connect. AT&T specifically warns that the reported issue may affect 911 calls. See Apple’s explanation of SOS and No Service.
Which phones and carrier are confirmed to be affected?
The confirmed report concerns a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max devices on AT&T. MacRumors reported that Apple had observed the issue only among those users and knew of no other affected models or carriers at the time of its report. That describes Apple’s reported observations then, not a guarantee that other cases cannot emerge. No numeric prevalence estimate is available.

Has Apple explained the cause?
No technical root cause has been disclosed in the statements and reporting cited here. MacRumors’ October 2, 2026 report likewise said the cause was unclear. It would be speculation to attribute the failure to the phone’s modem, iOS, or AT&T’s network.
