Short answer: SOLID remains a useful set of questions for React design, but it is not a React rulebook. React’s official guidance focuses on pure components and Hooks, immutable props and state, composition, and the Rules of Hooks. Use SOLID to examine where code changes, how consumers depend on contracts, and whether an abstraction earns its cost—not to enforce tiny components, inheritance, or layers everywhere.
What SOLID means in a React codebase
SOLID is an acronym for five object-oriented design principles: Single Responsibility, Open-Closed, Liskov Substitution, Interface Segregation, and Dependency Inversion. Robert C. Martin’s original definitions describe classes, objects, interfaces, and abstractions. React does not present SOLID as a framework mandate. Its own documentation defines how components, Hooks, props, state, composition, and rendering should work.
That distinction matters. A React adaptation is an interpretation of the principles for a component-and-composition model. It can help you spot accidental coupling, but it cannot turn every design decision into a universal rule.
| Principle as a useful question | Misleading rigid rule |
|---|---|
| Does this component or module have one likely reason to change? | Every component must be tiny or contain one line of markup. |
| Where will expected variation enter, and is there a clean extension seam? | Existing code may never be edited again. |
| Can a replacement preserve the contract consumers rely on? | React code should use class inheritance. |
| Are consumers forced to provide unrelated props or callbacks? | Every prop type must be split into multiple abstractions. |
| Would an injected dependency improve replacement, testing, or separation? | Every service call needs an interface and an extra layer. |
1. Single Responsibility: split by reasons to change
Martin’s definition says that only changes to one part of a specification should affect a class. In React, the practical question is whether a component or module combines concerns that are likely to evolve independently.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
React’s Thinking in React guidance offers a useful bridge: componentize the UI hierarchy, and a component should ideally be concerned with one thing. “Ideally” is important. It is decomposition guidance, not a law about component size.
A sensible split
A product page might have a page-level component that coordinates data loading, a product summary that presents product information, a quantity selector that manages its interaction, and a price display that formats money. Those boundaries are valuable when the concerns have different rules, owners, or change patterns.
What SRP does not require
Do not create a component for every wrapper, label, or conditional expression. A small component that keeps a cohesive piece of UI together can be easier to read than several indirections. Nor does SRP mean that every component may perform only one technical operation; a form component can render fields, validate them, and submit them when those activities form one coherent responsibility.
A practical test
- List the changes you expect: visual redesign, validation rules, data transport, permissions, or analytics.
- Ask whether one change would force edits throughout an otherwise unrelated component.
- Split only when the boundary reduces that coupling and remains understandable to its callers.
2. Open-Closed: design extension seams for real variation
The Open-Closed Principle says software entities should be open for extension but closed for modification. In React, composition supplies several possible extension seams: children, props, render functions, slots represented by elements, and replaceable implementations.

Composition rather than a prohibition on edits
A Dialog that accepts children can keep its focus management and layout while callers supply different content. A list component can accept a row-rendering function when different screens genuinely need different row presentations. These are applications of OCP to React’s composable model, not official React requirements.
function Dialog({ title, children, actions }) {
return (
<section role="dialog" aria-labelledby="dialog-title">
<h2 id="dialog-title">{title}</h2>
<div>{children}</div>
<footer>{actions}</footer>
</section>
);
}
The component can be extended with different content without knowing each content type. But if there is only one consumer and no credible variation, introducing a plugin registry or elaborate strategy hierarchy usually adds indirection rather than value.
When modification is the right choice
Changing existing code is not a design failure. A new requirement may reveal that the original boundary was wrong, or a direct, clear edit may be safer than preserving an abstraction that no longer fits. OCP is a prompt to look for stable extension points where variation is expected—not a ban on maintenance.
3. Liskov Substitution: preserve the consumer’s contract
Liskov Substitution says that objects should be replaceable by subtypes without changing program correctness. React does not mandate class inheritance, so the useful translation is broader: if two implementations claim to satisfy the same component, hook, service, or callback contract, a consumer should be able to swap them without unexpected behavior.

What a React contract includes
A contract includes more than TypeScript’s property names. It can include whether a callback is called once or repeatedly, whether an empty value is allowed, what loading and error states mean, whether a component renders its children, and which side effects occur after an action.
For example, two data providers may both expose loadUser(id). A replacement that returns a promise in the success case but throws synchronously for a normal “not found” result is not behaviorally substitutable if consumers rely on a consistent result or error model.
Check substitutes at the boundary
- Document inputs, outputs, error behavior, and timing assumptions.
- Test the contract from the consumer’s perspective, not only the implementation’s internal details.
- Avoid strengthening preconditions or weakening guarantees when supplying a replacement.
4. Interface Segregation: keep props and hooks focused
Interface Segregation favors client-specific interfaces over one general-purpose interface. In React, the analogous design advice is to avoid forcing a consumer to pass configuration, callbacks, or state that it does not use.
Focused props
A component with a large “everything” props object often couples unrelated screens to one changing API. Prefer a focused contract when it clarifies ownership. For instance, a date field should not require navigation callbacks, analytics configuration, and network clients merely because another screen needs them.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Focused does not mean artificially fragmented. A button can reasonably accept its label, disabled state, and click handler together. Splitting every prop into a separate wrapper can make ordinary use harder to follow.
Hooks follow the same idea
A custom Hook should expose the state and actions its consumers need, with names and semantics that make the contract clear. If callers repeatedly ignore half the returned object or pass placeholder callbacks, the Hook may combine unrelated responsibilities. Conversely, a shared Hook can legitimately return several values when they form one cohesive capability.

Dependency Inversion says high-level policy should not depend directly on low-level details; both should depend on abstractions. In React, a component can receive a service, adapter, or callback contract from above instead of importing a concrete network or storage implementation.
Example boundary
function Profile({ userRepository, userId }) {
const [user, setUser] = useState(null);
useEffect(() => {
let active = true;
userRepository.get(userId).then(result => {
if (active) setUser(result);
});
return () => { active = false; };
}, [userRepository, userId]);
return user ? <ProfileView user={user} /> : <Spinner />;
}
The component depends on the capability it needs, while a parent can provide a production repository, a cache-backed adapter, or a test double. A Context provider can also establish such a boundary when many descendants need the same capability.

Do not abstract speculatively
Add an abstraction when it provides useful replaceability, testing, or separation between policy and infrastructure. A one-off request does not automatically need an interface, factory, repository, adapter, and provider. Extra layers have their own maintenance cost and can hide the behavior a reader needs to understand.
React’s rules come first
React’s official rules say, “Components and Hooks must be pure,” “React calls Components and Hooks,” and developers must follow the Rules of Hooks. Purity is not merely a SOLID interpretation. React’s guidance states that pure functions perform a calculation and nothing more; components should be idempotent for their inputs, side effects belong outside render, and props and state are immutable snapshots.
Why purity changes the design discussion
A component that mutates a prop, writes to a global during render, or performs a network request while calculating JSX has a correctness problem regardless of how neatly its responsibilities are named. Keeping render pure makes boundaries predictable and allows React to call components as needed.
Practical checks
- Keep side effects in event handlers or Effects rather than render.
- Do not mutate props, state, or values owned by another component.
- Follow Hook call order and call Hooks only where React permits.
- Use Strict Mode and the React ESLint plugin as practical aids for finding violations.
A decision process for applying SOLID without overengineering
- Start with the change. Name the feature, bug, or variation you expect. If no likely change or consumer need exists, delay the abstraction.
- Locate the boundary. Decide whether the concern belongs in a component, custom Hook, utility, service, adapter, or provider.
- Define the smallest useful contract. Specify the props, return values, errors, and side effects that consumers actually rely on.
- Choose composition before inheritance. Use children, props, callbacks, and injected implementations where they make variation explicit.
- Check substitution. Replace the implementation with a test double or alternate implementation and verify that consumer behavior remains valid.
- Run React’s correctness checks. Confirm render purity, immutability, Hook rules, and behavior under Strict Mode.
- Reassess the cost. Remove a layer if it does not reduce coupling, improve testing, or clarify a real responsibility.
What SOLID can—and cannot—tell you
SOLID can help a team ask precise questions about responsibility, variation, contracts, props, and dependencies. It cannot determine the ideal component tree, prove that a design is maintainable, or supply measurable evidence that more abstractions improve every React project. React’s official documentation remains the authority for React behavior; SOLID is a design vocabulary you can apply selectively to that model.
