Do not trust an unexpected caller merely because the screen says “Social Security Administration.” SSA employees do make legitimate business calls, but caller ID, a badge number, an employee’s name, and official-looking paperwork can all be faked. The safest test is to examine the context, reject threats and unusual payment demands, end the call, and verify the matter through contact information you find independently in official SSA materials.
If you are asking, “What should I do if I receive a call from someone claiming to be a Social Security employee?” pause before answering questions or pressing links. A suspicious call is not automatically proven fraud just because it was unexpected; a threat, pressure to act immediately, demand for secrecy, or request for money is much stronger evidence of impersonation.
The 30-second test for an SSA call
- Recall the context. Did you recently apply for a benefit, ask SSA to call you, or receive payments that require a record update? Those are ordinary reasons SSA may telephone.
- Listen for coercion. Arrest threats, legal threats, claims that your Social Security number is suspended, urgent deadlines, or instructions to keep the conversation secret are scam indicators.
- Reject unusual payment requests. Do not pay by gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency or other internet currency, prepaid debit card, cash, or a similar method. Do not send money to “restore” an SSN.
- Stop sharing information. Do not provide banking details, passwords, one-time codes, or identity information while the caller is directing the conversation.
- Verify independently. Hang up and find SSA contact details through the agency’s official website, an existing official letter, or another trusted SSA channel. Never use the number displayed on the incoming call as your proof.
An unexpected call without any of the hard red flags deserves caution, but it does not by itself establish that the caller is fraudulent. Context and independent verification decide what to do next.
When a legitimate SSA call is plausible
The Social Security Administration says its employees do contact the public by telephone for business purposes. Its FAQ, dated December 11, 2024, states: “Social Security employees do contact the public by telephone for business purposes.” A real call is most plausible in one of these situations:

You recently applied for a benefit
An employee may call to clarify information connected with an application or to complete work on a pending claim. If you know which application is active, ask the caller to identify the general purpose of the call, then end the conversation and call SSA through an independently located official channel before discussing personal details.
You already receive payments and a record update is needed
Changes affecting a benefits record can lead to outreach. The fact that you receive Social Security does not make every caller legitimate; it only provides a plausible reason for a call. Verification remains necessary when the contact is unexpected or asks for sensitive information.
You specifically requested a callback
If you recently asked SSA to return your call, an incoming call may be the response. Keep the request confirmation or related correspondence available, but still refuse pressure to pay or to bypass normal verification.
An SSN or record problem is usually explained by mail
SSA says that when there is a problem with a Social Security number or record, it typically mails a letter. A call claiming that your number is suspended should therefore be treated as a warning sign, particularly when the caller demands immediate action. A mailed notice that you owe money explains payment options and appeal rights; it is not replaced by a demand over the phone.
Red flags that point to an impersonation scam
Threats of arrest, prosecution, or immediate legal action
Scammers create fear so that a target stops checking the story. Claims that police are coming, a warrant is being issued, or benefits will end within minutes are not a normal way to resolve an SSA matter. End the call rather than arguing about the threat.

A claim that your Social Security number is suspended
SSA does not suspend an SSN as a punishment that can be reversed by a phone payment. A caller who says your number has been suspended and offers to “reactivate” it is using a familiar government-impersonation script.
Immediate payment or an unusual payment method
SSA says it will not demand immediate payment by gift card, wire transfer, prepaid debit card, internet currency, or cash. It also will not ask for banking details in order to provide a cost-of-living adjustment. A request for any of these methods is a hard stop, even if the caller knows your name, address, or a few digits of your SSN.
Pressure to keep the matter secret
Instructions not to tell a spouse, relative, adviser, bank employee, or government office are designed to isolate you. A legitimate administrative issue does not require secrecy from people who help you make financial or benefits decisions. Pause and speak with someone you trust before taking any action.
Requests for passwords, one-time codes, or account access
Do not read a verification code aloud, disclose a my Social Security password, or allow a caller to control your device. If an account-security issue is real, access the account yourself through a known official route and contact SSA separately.
Caller ID that appears governmental
Phone numbers can be spoofed. A display that says “Social Security,” shows a government area code, or matches a number you find online is not authentication. Scammers can also use the names of real employees, badge numbers, and convincing scripts.

Documents, emails, or text links that look official
Logos, seals, letterhead, attachments, and links can be fabricated. Do not click a link or open an attachment supplied during an unexpected contact. Type an official address yourself or use a saved bookmark you created previously, then verify the issue outside the message.

The strongest evidence is the caller’s behavior and your ability to verify independently. A plausible context cannot excuse a threat or payment demand, and a missing context cannot prove fraud without further evidence.
What to do while the person is still on the phone
- Interrupt the urgency. Say, “I do not make decisions or payments on an unsolicited call. I will contact SSA independently.” You do not need to prove that the caller is lying.
- End the call. Hang up, even if the person says disconnecting will cause arrest or immediate loss of benefits. Do not call back using the recent-calls list.
- Do not click, download, or reply. If the contact includes a text, email, attachment, QR code, or web link, leave it unopened. A message can be part of the same impersonation attempt.
- Record only safe details. If you can do so without continuing the conversation, note the date, time, displayed number, claimed name, requested payment method, and what was said. Do not keep the caller engaged to gather evidence.
- Talk with a trusted person. Fear and time pressure make mistakes more likely. Ask someone you trust to sit with you while you verify the matter.
- Contact SSA through an independent route. Use the official SSA website or contact information on a letter you already possess. Explain that you received an unsolicited call and ask whether any real case, payment, or record issue exists.
How to verify without trusting caller ID
Verification means starting a new contact, not transferring the old conversation to another number supplied by the caller. Open the official SSA website by typing its address yourself or use a known bookmark. You can also use a telephone number printed on an authentic SSA notice that you already received. Do not search for a number while a caller is pressuring you and then read it back to that same person; end the call first.
When you reach SSA, describe the claimed purpose of the call, the date, and the caller’s name without volunteering extra personal information. Ask whether SSA actually attempted to reach you and what secure method it wants you to use. If SSA has no record of the call, treat the original contact as an impersonation attempt and report it.
How to report a suspected Social Security scam
Report Social Security-related scams to the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General. Include the contact details you safely recorded, the impersonated agency or employee, the requested payment or information, and whether you sent anything. Reporting helps investigators connect repeated campaigns, but it does not require you to continue talking to a scammer.

The Federal Trade Commission also directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov for government-impersonation scams. Use the FTC route for a broader government-impersonation report as well as the SSA OIG route for the Social Security-specific details. If money moved through a bank, card, money-transfer service, or cryptocurrency platform, notify that provider through its official fraud channel immediately and ask what cancellation or recovery options remain.
Michelle L. Anderson, Assistant Inspector General for Audit as First Assistant performing the duties of the Inspector General, said in a 2026 SSA press release: “Awareness is one of the strongest tools we have – we encourage consumers to take an intentional pause when they get a message they weren’t expecting, guard their wallet, verify, and report suspected scams – knowing the red flags can prevent devastating financial losses.”

Texts are limited and opt-in
SSA says it sends text messages only to people who opted in, and only in limited situations such as subscribed notifications or enhanced security for a my Social Security account. That does not mean every unexpected text is automatically fraudulent, but a request for money, personal information, a password, or account access is a red flag. Do not use the message’s link to verify it; sign in through a known official route or contact SSA independently.
A letter about money owed
SSA says a person who owes money receives a letter explaining payment options and appeal rights. A caller who refuses to provide a written explanation, demands a same-day payment, or says you must bypass the appeal process is not following that pattern. Keep the letter and verify its contents through an official SSA contact method rather than calling a number supplied in a separate message.

Emails and attachments
Government logos and polished formatting do not make an email authentic. Avoid opening attachments or entering credentials after an unexpected message. If you need to check a notice, navigate to the official SSA service yourself and compare the matter there.

If you already shared information or paid
If you disclosed banking or card information
Call your bank or card issuer immediately using the number on your statement or card, not a number from the caller. Explain what information was exposed, ask whether transactions can be blocked or reversed, and review recent activity for unauthorized charges. Change any password that you disclosed or reused elsewhere, beginning with the email account that could be used to reset other accounts.
If you gave an SSN or identity details
Write down exactly what was shared and when, then report the incident to SSA OIG and the FTC. Monitor account statements and credit activity for unfamiliar applications or changes. Ask a reputable financial institution or a government consumer-protection channel what fraud alert or credit-freeze choices are available in your situation; do not let a new caller sell you “recovery” services under additional pressure.
If you installed software or granted remote access
Disconnect the device from the internet if the caller is still connected, remove software you did not intentionally install, and have a trusted technician or your organization’s IT team check the device. Change passwords from a separate, trusted device and review account sign-in activity. Do not pay a second caller who promises to clean up the first incident without independently verifying that service.

If you sent money
Speed matters, but recovery is not guaranteed. Contact the payment provider immediately, preserve receipts and transaction IDs, and report the loss to SSA OIG and ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Cryptocurrency transfers may be difficult or impossible to reverse, so provide the wallet address, transaction hash, and timestamps if you have them.
Why this scam pattern deserves attention
The FTC reported in a September 25, 2026 consumer-advice article that it received more than 375,000 reports from people who lost more than $900 million to government-impersonation scams during 2025. Those figures cover government impersonation broadly, not Social Security calls alone. They show why a convincing agency name or official-looking number should trigger verification rather than compliance.
A printable decision checklist
- Expected matter: I recently applied, requested a callback, or know of a record update.
- No coercion: There is no arrest threat, SSN-suspension claim, artificial deadline, or secrecy demand.
- No prohibited payment: Nobody asks for a gift card, wire, prepaid debit card, internet currency, cash, or similar method.
- No unsafe disclosure: I have not supplied a password, one-time code, banking details, or remote access.
- Independent check: I ended the contact and reached SSA using an official route I found myself.
- Report: I preserved safe details and submitted a report when the contact impersonated SSA.
If any item fails, stop the interaction and verify independently. The goal is not to win an argument with the caller; it is to keep control of your money, identity, and accounts while a genuine SSA matter is checked through a channel the caller cannot manipulate.
