Public posts can give scammers useful details—a new job, a trip, your interests, or the names of people close to you—and help them make a fraudulent message feel familiar. You do not need to make every account private, but reducing unnecessary exposure and securing the account’s recovery path can make impersonation and targeted pitches harder.
The Federal Trade Commission says people reported losing $2.1 billion to scams on social media in 2025. That is reported loss, not a count of every loss or a measure of any one person’s risk. The FTC identifies shopping scams as the most commonly reported type on social media; investment scams accounted for more than half of reported losses, and nearly 60% of people reporting romance-scam losses in 2025 said the scam began on social media. Start by limiting what strangers can learn from your profile
A profile can act like a cheat sheet for social engineering. Visible interests and personal details can help a scammer build rapport, while public contact lists can reveal who to impersonate or approach. The FTC advises limiting who can see posts and contacts so scammers have less information to use. That does not stop every scam: fraudulent ads, impersonation, and messages from compromised accounts can reach people regardless of their privacy settings.

- Check what a person who is not connected to you can see, if the service provides a public-profile preview.
- Remove or limit unnecessary identifying details, such as routine location information, where the service offers controls.
- Revisit these choices after a platform changes its settings or you add new profile information.
Menu names and available controls vary by service, so use each platform’s current privacy and security settings rather than relying on a generic menu path.

Secure the account—and the email account that can reset it
Use a distinct, hard-to-guess password for every social account. Then turn on multifactor authentication (MFA), also called two-factor authentication, wherever it is available. The FTC recommends two-factor authentication for sensitive accounts, including social media. Your email account deserves the same attention: password-reset links for other services may arrive there, so access to that inbox can become a route into other accounts. Choose the strongest method your account and devices support. FTC guidance describes security keys as the strongest two-factor option; an authenticator app is safer than a code sent by text or email when available. SMS codes can be exposed in SIM-swap attacks. Before changing phones or deleting an authentication app, check how the service handles recovery. Keep recovery email and phone details current, and review signed-in sessions for devices or locations you do not recognize.
Pause before sending money, codes, or sensitive information
A familiar name or profile photo does not prove that a message is genuine. If a friend unexpectedly asks for money or sensitive information, contact them using a number you already have or another separate channel—not the details in the suspicious message. Never give a verification code to someone who contacted you; a code can let them access or take over an account. FTC advice on spotting and avoiding scams

Be equally cautious with ads and sellers in social feeds. Before buying, search independently for the seller’s name with “scam” or “complaint.” Do not let a convincing profile, urgent offer, or polished advertisement replace checking who is actually taking your payment. Recognize signs that an account may be taken over
Act promptly if you notice any of these signs:
- Your password, recovery email, or phone number changed without your permission.
- You see a login or active session you do not recognize.
- You are locked out despite entering the correct credentials.
- Contacts receive messages, links, or requests that you did not send.
The FTC’s hacked-account recovery guidance covers both social accounts and email. If your email account is affected, treat it as urgent because it may be used to reset other passwords.

What to do if a social account is hacked
- Use the provider’s official recovery process. Go to the service directly through its app or website and follow its account-recovery instructions. Do not use a recovery link supplied by an unexpected message or an unfamiliar third party.
- Change the password. Once you regain access, set a new, unique password. If you reused the compromised password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too, starting with your email.
- End other sessions and turn on MFA. Use the service’s current security controls to sign out unfamiliar or all other sessions, then enable the strongest MFA method it supports.
- Inspect recovery details and account activity. Check that the recovery email and phone are yours, and look for unfamiliar messages, posts, profile edits, or connected devices.
- Warn your contacts through another channel. Tell friends not to click recent links or respond to money requests that appeared to come from your account.

For accounts managed by an organization
Personal account habits are not a substitute for organizational controls. CISA’s August 2023 revision of its social-media protection guide is aimed at organizations and discusses account policies, credential management, MFA, privacy settings, trusted devices, vendor vetting, threat awareness, and incident-response planning. That is organizational guidance, not a consumer requirement; organizations should consult CISA’s Social Media Account Protection Guide for the applicable recommendations.
