Use the feature that matches the job—otherwise you can install a sharing button when you really need Open Graph metadata, or expect profile icons to share posts.
First, identify the social-media job
| What you want | WordPress feature or tool | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Show links to your own accounts | Social Icons block | It does not give visitors a button to share the current post. |
| Let readers share the current page | A social-sharing plugin | It does not automatically publish your new posts to your accounts. |
| Control title, description, and image in a link preview | Open Graph metadata supplied by WordPress.com, an SEO plugin, a theme, or a dedicated metadata plugin | Metadata alone does not create visible share buttons. |
| Send newly published posts to social accounts | An auto-publishing service or a plugin feature that explicitly supports auto-posting | Reader-facing share buttons are not an auto-publishing system. |
On WordPress.com, several preview defaults are documented by the platform. On a self-hosted WordPress site, the active theme and plugins determine the result, so inspect your installation rather than assuming WordPress core behaves like WordPress.com.
Add links to your social profiles
Use the WordPress Social Icons block when the goal is to help visitors find or follow the site’s accounts.
- Open the page, post, template, or widget area where the links should appear.
- Insert the Social Icons block.
- Choose an icon for each supported service.
- Enter the complete URL of the corresponding profile.
- Repeat for every account you want to display, then save or publish.
These links point visitors to your profiles. They are not controls for sharing the page they are currently reading.

Add buttons so visitors can share a post
Install a sharing plugin when readers need controls for the current URL. For example, the Social Snap listing describes support for Facebook, X, LinkedIn, email, print, and copying a link, with inline, floating, image, shortcode, and template placements. Its WordPress.org listing describes the free plugin as a Lite version and lists additional Pro features separately; check the current listing before relying on a particular network or placement.
Choose the placement
- Inline: place controls before or after the article, or at another inline position provided by the plugin.
- Floating: keep controls visible as the reader scrolls, if the plugin and theme support that layout.
- Image: offer sharing controls on eligible images.
- Shortcode or template: place buttons in a specific block, widget, or theme location.
Check before enabling
- Confirm that every network your audience needs is supported.
- Check keyboard access, labels, contrast, and mobile behavior.
- Review whether the plugin adds third-party requests, scripts, or cookies that affect your privacy notice and performance.
- Check whether your theme already supplies sharing controls so you do not create duplicate buttons.
Control the link preview
Social networks read metadata from the page to assemble a card containing a title, description, and image. The WordPress.org Open Graph plugin listing says that it inserts Open Graph metadata into posts and pages and provides an extension mechanism for themes and other plugins to override or add data. It also states that the plugin does not directly add share buttons.

WordPress.com defaults
WordPress.com documents these defaults for posts and pages:
- The preview title is the post or page title.
- The description comes from the excerpt. If no excerpt exists, WordPress.com uses the first 195 characters of the content.
- The featured image is used when one is set.
- Without a featured image, WordPress.com may use other eligible images, including slideshow or gallery images and other images on the site.
Those rules are WordPress.com behavior, not a universal rule for self-hosted WordPress. On self-hosted sites, identify which SEO plugin, theme, or metadata plugin owns the Open Graph fields and configure that system.

Preview before publishing on WordPress.com
In the Jetpack editor sidebar, open Link Preview. The panel shows how the post’s Open Graph title, description, and image are expected to appear in the platform previews offered by the editor. Correct the title, excerpt, or featured image before publishing if the result is wrong.
Choose an image that Facebook can use
WordPress.com’s Facebook thumbnail guidance lists the following targets. They are Facebook guidance from that page, not a universal specification for every network:
Rank #4
| Use case | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Minimum image | 200 × 200 pixels |
| Larger display | At least 600 × 315 pixels |
| High-resolution display | At least 1200 × 630 pixels |
| File size | No more than 8 MB |
| Shape | Close to a 1.91:1 aspect ratio to reduce News Feed cropping |
Platform specifications can change, so recheck Facebook’s current guidance when this article is updated. A correctly sized image can still be rejected or replaced if the page exposes conflicting metadata or the platform has cached an earlier result.
Fix the wrong image or an old Facebook preview
When the wrong image appears
- Confirm that the intended image is set as the featured image where your WordPress setup expects one.
- Check the excerpt and title if the description or headline is also wrong.
- Inspect the page’s Open Graph output and determine whether the active SEO plugin, theme, or metadata plugin is generating it.
- Disable duplicate metadata sources carefully—two plugins writing competing
og:imagevalues can produce unpredictable previews. - Save the corrected page and test the public URL again.
When Facebook keeps showing an old image
Facebook may be displaying a previously fetched, cached version. Use Facebook’s Sharing Debugger to inspect the URL details and request a new scrape after correcting the page. Without that request, the guide warns that Facebook may otherwise take many days or weeks to check the URL again.
Best Value
Keep Open Graph data from colliding
Only one system should be the authoritative source for each preview field. Before adding a dedicated Open Graph plugin, check whether your SEO plugin, theme, Jetpack configuration, or hosting setup already emits the tags. The Open Graph plugin listing specifically notes interactions with Jetpack. Duplicate tags can leave a social network choosing an unexpected title, description, or image.
A practical ownership check
- View the public page source or use a metadata inspection tool.
- Search for
og:title,og:description, andog:image. - Record which plugin or theme setting supplies each value.
- Change the value in that owning system, then clear any page or CDN cache and retest.
Do not confuse sharing with automatic publishing
A share button waits for a reader to choose a network and share the current page. Automatic publishing sends a newly published post from WordPress to an account without that reader action. Treat them as separate requirements.
Social Snap describes auto-posting among its Pro features. That description does not make auto-posting a WordPress core feature or a capability of every sharing plugin. If automatic distribution is essential, verify the exact networks, account authorization, scheduling behavior, error handling, and free-versus-paid boundary in the current product listing.
Quick Recap
A decision checklist
- Name the job: profile links, reader sharing, preview metadata, or automatic posting.
- Check network coverage: compare the exact services supported by the block or plugin with the accounts you use.
- Check placement: confirm inline, floating, image, shortcode, or template options if visitors must share.
- Find metadata ownership: avoid adding a second Open Graph generator.
- Separate publishing from sharing: require explicit auto-posting support when that is the goal.
- Verify current feature boundaries: plugin listings and platform specifications change; do not infer current pricing or Pro features from an old installation count.
Troubleshooting quick reference
| Symptom | Likely check |
|---|---|
| Profile icons appear, but readers cannot share the article | You added the Social Icons block; install and configure a visitor-sharing tool. |
| Share buttons work, but the card has the wrong title or image | Inspect Open Graph tags and the system that owns them; then clear caches and retest. |
| The featured image is correct in WordPress but not on Facebook | Check image dimensions, file size, aspect ratio, duplicate metadata, and Facebook’s cached scrape. |
| Facebook still shows an earlier image | Use Sharing Debugger to inspect the URL and request a new scrape. |
| Posts are not appearing automatically on an account | Verify that the selected product includes auto-posting, that the account authorization is valid, and that the network is supported. |
