Sober is an unofficial, experimental way to play Roblox on Linux, but it is not Wine: it runs Roblox’s Android client through a specialized runtime. That makes Sober the more relevant route to investigate today, while its Android-client limitations and uncertain compatibility matter more than any unverified speed claim.
Can you play Roblox on Linux?
Roblox’s computer requirements page explicitly says Linux is not supported. That is the official support position; it does not mean unofficial projects cannot provide a way to play.
Sober is one such project. Its developers describe it as experimental and warn that it may contain bugs, be discontinued, or be blocked by Roblox. It is not an official Roblox product or a supported Linux edition. See the Sober project page for the project’s own description.
How Sober differs from Wine or Proton
Wine and Proton are commonly associated with running Windows software on Linux. Sober takes a different path: its FAQ says it uses a specialized runtime to bridge the Android version of Roblox to Linux. It should not be described as Wine running the Windows Roblox client.

That distinction matters when choosing an approach. The available current documentation establishes Sober’s Android-client route, but does not establish Wine or Proton as a reliable, currently supported way to run Roblox Player. Roblox’s official Linux support position remains unchanged regardless of which unofficial method is considered.

Sober’s installation documentation sets these minimum requirements:

- An x86-64/AMD64 processor with SSE4.1 support.
- Graphics capable of OpenGL ES 3.0.
The project recommends SSE4.2 and Vulkan 1.1. Its documentation explains that the Roblox x86-64 Android APK requires SSE4.2; on an SSE4.1 CPU, Sober emulates the missing instruction set, which can reduce performance. ARM is not the documented practical target: the FAQ mentions an ARM beta but explicitly says it is not production-ready.
Sober’s FAQ says recent GPUs with Vulkan support through Mesa or NVIDIA drivers are likely to work, and that Sober may fall back to OpenGL when Vulkan is unavailable. This is project guidance, not a guarantee for every GPU or driver setup.

How to install Sober
- Install Flatpak and ensure Flathub is configured for your Linux distribution.
- In a terminal, run
flatpak install flathub org.vinegarhq.Sober. - Launch Sober. On first launch, it prompts you to install Roblox; automatic installation is selected by default and is the recommended option unless you specifically understand manual APK installation.
Sober is also listed on Flathub. Release details change over time. The listing’s version 1.8.0 notes included performance and freeze fixes, a rendering fix for some GPUs, Vulkan crash fixes, and an update to Roblox 2.741.1061; check the listing for the version currently available.
What compatibility trade-offs should you expect?
Android-client visuals
Because Sober runs the Android client, its rendering is not identical to a native Windows desktop client. The troubleshooting guide identifies pixelated outlines as a longstanding issue and says avatar clothing can look lower quality because the client targets mobile texture quality. Raising texture settings may use more memory.

Some games may refuse to join
The troubleshooting guide says games using Android Remote Attestation (ARA) may reject Sober because it is not a real Android device. Its list of games with confirmed reports was marked disabled as of August 20, 2026, but the guide warns that ARA could be re-enabled without notice. Treat this as a changeable, game-specific issue, not a permanent block across Roblox.
Launch, memory, driver and virtual-machine problems
Sober’s troubleshooting documentation also notes out-of-memory crashes, especially on systems with limited VRAM; possible mismatches between NVIDIA drivers and Flatpak’s driver version; launch problems on outdated kernels; and poor or unsupported behavior in virtual machines unless GPU passthrough is available. Consult the project’s troubleshooting guide for symptoms and suggested checks before assuming a particular hardware upgrade is necessary.

Is Sober faster than Roblox on Windows?
Sober’s developers say it can match or exceed the Windows client’s performance on the same computer. That is a project claim, not an independently verified comparison: the project material does not provide controlled benchmark results, test conditions or game-by-game measurements. Actual performance can vary with the game, GPU, drivers and Sober release.
Recent Flathub release notes include fixes for performance, freezes and graphics-related problems, underscoring that behavior can change between versions. Those notes are useful evidence of ongoing maintenance, not proof of a particular frame-rate advantage.
Can you use Sober for Roblox Studio?
No. Sober is intended for Roblox Player, not Roblox Studio. The Sober FAQ directs Studio users to Vinegar, a separate VinegarHQ project.
