Snapshot testing checks whether serialized output has changed; visual regression testing checks whether the rendered interface looks different. A text snapshot can help catch changes to a component’s structure or another serializable value. A screenshot comparison can reveal changes to layout, typography, spacing, color, and other visible details. They answer different questions, so many teams use each where its output is useful rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.
What is the difference between snapshot testing and visual regression testing?
The word “snapshot” is used for more than one kind of test. In conventional snapshot testing, a test saves a serialized value—often component output—as a reference and compares later output with it. In visual regression testing, the reference is an image of a rendered page or component. A later screenshot is compared with that image.
Jest makes this distinction directly: its snapshots serialize values and compare them with a diff, while visual regression tools capture web pages and compare the resulting images (Jest’s snapshot testing documentation). The two methods can both be called snapshot testing in some tools and conversations, which is why it helps to ask what representation is being compared.
| Question | Serialized snapshot | Visual regression test |
|---|---|---|
| What is compared? | Text or another serializable value | A screenshot of the rendered interface |
| What change is it suited to flag? | A change in structure or output value | A change in visible rendering |
| What does a typical diff look like? | A text or structured-value diff | An image or pixel diff, potentially with thresholds or filtering |
| What is a common source of noise? | Large or unfocused output that is hard to review | Differences in environment, timing, animation, fonts, or dynamic content |
Neither kind of diff establishes on its own that a defect exists. A change may be intentional; the test tells you what changed so you can decide whether to investigate or accept it.

When should you use serialized snapshot tests?
Use a serialized snapshot when the expected output itself is meaningful to inspect and a change to it deserves review. Jest can snapshot any serializable value, not only a React component. For example, a small component’s rendered structure or a focused text value may be suitable if the saved output makes the contract clear.
- Prefer an explicit assertion for a small, specific behavior. If the important requirement is a value or condition, an assertion aimed at that requirement is usually easier to understand than a large saved output.
- Keep a snapshot narrow. Jest cautions that large snapshots can be difficult to interpret and maintain. A focused diff makes the changed behavior easier to identify.
- Review generated changes. A snapshot update should record an understood change, not merely silence a failing test. Jest documents interactive review for snapshot failures.
A serialized snapshot does not answer whether the browser laid out the content correctly. The output may remain structurally identical while a stylesheet change alters alignment, font rendering, or spacing.
When should you use visual regression testing?
Use a screenshot comparison when the requirement is about appearance: whether a page, component, or state still renders as expected. It can be useful for checking layout, typography, spacing, colors, and other outcomes that a text diff does not directly show.

In Playwright, the visual assertion is await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On an initial run, Playwright creates a reference image; later runs compare against it. Its visual comparison options include maxDiffPixels and a stylesheet that can filter volatile elements. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation for the current behavior and configuration.

A screenshot diff is most useful when the inputs and capture conditions are controlled. Playwright notes that browser output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its guidance is to use the same environment for creating and checking baselines.
- Keep the browser and operating system consistent between baseline creation and later runs.
- Use a fixed viewport and stable test data so the comparison is about the interface, not different inputs.
- Wait for the page to reach a stable state before capturing. Where suitable, suppress volatile elements with Playwright’s stylesheet option.
- Consider animations and changing content. Chromatic documents pausing CSS animations, transitions, video, and GIFs during capture; JavaScript-driven animation may still need to be paused by the test owner. Device-pixel-ratio changes can also create differences.
These controls reduce noise, but they do not make every difference a bug. Inspect the image diff and determine whether the change is expected before accepting it.

How do you update a baseline safely?
Updating a baseline changes what future runs treat as expected. The safe rule is to review the proposed difference first, then update only when the new output is the intended result.
- Run the test in its normal, controlled environment. If it fails, open the text or image diff and identify what changed.
- Decide whether the change is intended. Check the relevant code and design change. An unexplained difference should be investigated rather than accepted.
- Update the reference only after review. Playwright provides an update flag for approved visual changes. Chromatic’s workflow similarly includes reviewing visual changes and accepting updates to establish the next baseline.
- Review the resulting baseline change. Treat a changed reference as part of the change being reviewed, so accidental or overly broad updates are not hidden.
For hosted workflows, Chromatic describes visual capture and review integrated with Storybook, Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress. Its documentation covers browser and viewport variants, branch workflows, and reviewing changes before accepting new baselines (Snapshots, Branches, baselines, and git history, and Chromatic for Playwright).

An accessibility-tree snapshot checks a different contract again: accessible structure, such as roles and names, rather than serialized component output or rendered pixels. Playwright’s ARIA snapshots express expected accessible structure; matching can be partial and is order-sensitive. They can help check whether the accessible representation is as expected, but do not replace a visual comparison. See Playwright’s ARIA snapshots documentation.

Choose the check based on the intended guarantee: serialized values for output structure, screenshots for appearance, and ARIA snapshots for accessible structure. A UI can satisfy one and fail another, so adding one form of test should not be mistaken for covering the others.
What commonly makes these tests noisy or misleading?
- Oversized text snapshots: a broad serialized output can bury a meaningful change in a long diff. Split the behavior into focused assertions or smaller snapshots.
- Different screenshot environments: changes in OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode can affect rendering. Align the environment used for baselines and subsequent runs.
- Unstable page state: dynamic content, animations, or capture timing can cause image differences unrelated to the intended change. Stabilize inputs and wait for the relevant UI to settle; filter or pause volatile elements when appropriate.
- Baseline updates without inspection: an update can make the next run pass while preserving an unintended visual or structural change. Review the diff before changing the reference.
- Using the wrong representation: a text snapshot is not a check of pixel appearance, and a screenshot is not a check that accessible roles and names are correct. Select the assertion that matches the behavior you need to protect.
Need a screenshot without building a browser capture setup?
For tests that need the rendered page as an image, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a visual-regression baseline manager: it returns a screenshot or PDF, while your test or review workflow still decides how to compare captures and accept changes. Its API can be useful when you need a screenshot file without setting up browser automation yourself.
For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of Stripe as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

FAQ
Can a passing snapshot test prove a change is harmless?
No. A passing test means the output matches the reference the test currently uses. If the reference was updated without understanding the difference, the pass does not establish that the change was intended.
Does a visual diff identify the code that caused the change?
A visual diff shows where the rendered image differs; use it as a review clue alongside the code change and test context, not as an explanation of the underlying cause.
