Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 has the higher published CPU clock ceiling: Qualcomm lists up to 3.8 GHz for its custom Oryon CPU, compared with up to 3 GHz for Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. That headline difference does not establish how much faster one chip is in a phone, or which delivers better battery life, graphics performance, or sustained gaming.
What is the difference between Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 5?
They are distinct Qualcomm mobile platforms, announced at different times and described with different headline specifications. Qualcomm lists Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 as a 4 nm platform with CPU speeds up to 3 GHz and a Snapdragon X70 5G Modem-RF System. Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 on November 26, 2025, describing a custom-built Oryon CPU with peak speeds up to 3.8 GHz and positioning it in its premium smartphone tier.
Those figures are manufacturer specifications, not a controlled performance comparison. A maximum CPU clock does not by itself show how quickly a phone completes a task: architecture, power limits, cooling, software, and workload all matter. Qualcomm’s full platform briefs provide the appropriate reference for each chip’s published feature set and qualifications.

What benchmark results are available?
One published Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 result set comes from a Tom’s Guide review of the OnePlus 15R, tested on December 17, 2025. The figures belong to that handset and review conditions, not to every phone using the chip.
| Test in the OnePlus 15R review | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Geekbench 6 single-core | 2,691 |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | 9,502 |
| 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited | 4,669 points / 27.96 fps |
Tom’s Guide’s OnePlus 15R review reports those scores. TechRadar identifies the OnePlus Nord 5 as a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 phone, but the reviewed passage does not provide a directly comparable score. Its review context therefore cannot be paired with the OnePlus 15R figures to calculate a chip-to-chip gap. TechRadar’s OnePlus Nord 5 review provides the handset context.

Can you say exactly how much faster Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is?
No exact percentage advantage is established by these results. The available evidence does not provide a same-lab, same-benchmark-version comparison between Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. Geekbench CPU scores and 3DMark graphics scores also measure different workloads, so neither is a complete measure of everyday responsiveness, gaming, or battery life.
A stronger comparison would test phones with both chips using the same benchmark versions and comparable software and performance settings, report the handset for each result, and include repeated runs that account for cooling and sustained behavior. Device cooling, power limits, memory configuration, operating-system version, and vendor performance modes can all affect a phone’s result.

Does a higher clock mean better gaming or battery life?
Not necessarily. Qualcomm’s stated 3.8 GHz ceiling is a CPU specification, not a guarantee of better graphics performance, lower power use, or a particular battery life. Gaming and long workloads depend on the phone’s GPU implementation, thermal design, power limits, and how performance changes after the device heats up. The cited phone reviews do not establish a matched comparison of thermals, sustained gaming, or battery life for these two platforms.
When choosing between actual phones, compare more than the processor: look for results from named CPU and graphics tests, sustained-load behavior, battery testing under a similar workload, connectivity support, camera and display implementation, software support, price, and availability in your region. Several of those factors belong to the handset rather than the chip.
Is Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 the same as Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5?
No. Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 are different names; do not treat them as interchangeable. Qualcomm’s November 26, 2025 announcement calls Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 a premium offering, not the Elite model. The similar names make it especially important to check the exact chipset named for a particular phone.
