Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is the higher-tier platform on paper. Qualcomm lists a custom Oryon CPU and 3 nm process for it, compared with the Kryo CPU and 4 nm process of Snapdragon 7s Gen 4. But the benchmark results currently available are not a controlled, same-test comparison, so they cannot establish a reliable percentage gap or a direct gaming win.

How the two Snapdragon platforms differ

Qualcomm’s specifications place these chips in different tiers, but a processor name alone does not determine how a finished phone performs. Phone makers choose memory, cooling, power limits, software, and which platform capabilities to enable.

Area Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 What it means
CPU Custom Oryon CPU, according to Qualcomm. Kryo CPU: one prime core up to 2.7 GHz, three performance cores up to 2.4 GHz, and four efficiency cores up to 1.8 GHz, according to Qualcomm’s product brief. They use different CPU designs and platform tiers. Clock speeds alone do not establish a performance ratio.
GPU Newly architected Adreno GPU, Qualcomm says. Adreno GPU; the secondary comparison listing identifies it as Adreno 810. GPU generation, phone cooling, and game settings all affect real gaming performance.
Manufacturing process 3 nm, per Qualcomm’s product page. 4 nm, per Qualcomm’s product brief. Node labels alone do not predict battery life across different phones.
AI hardware Hexagon NPU. Hexagon NPU, with generative-AI support and several model families listed in Qualcomm’s brief. Available on-device AI features also depend on the phone maker’s software and implementation.
Connectivity and platform features Qualcomm lists high-bandwidth DDR support and Wi-Fi 7. Qualcomm lists Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, and 5G. Check the specific phone’s specifications; a platform capability is not a promise that every handset includes it.
Display and video Consult Qualcomm’s current product page and the phone’s own specifications for exact limits. Qualcomm’s brief lists WFHD+ at up to 144 Hz with HDR10+ support and video recording up to 4K HDR. These are platform capabilities, not guaranteed features in every phone.

Qualcomm markets the 8 Gen 5 as delivering “13% overall power savings” from its improved 3 nm process. The cited product-page statement does not identify a clear comparison baseline, so it should not be read as evidence that the 8 Gen 5 is 13% more efficient than the 7s Gen 4. For the 7s Gen 4, Qualcomm says its comparisons refer to the previous-generation Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 and that results vary with OEM implementation and other factors.

What the available benchmark results show

Published figures offer examples of Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 performance, but they do not form a head-to-head matchup with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 phone.

Chip or device tested Benchmark result How to interpret it
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 entry listed by NanoReview 3,102,899 in AnTuTu 12; NanoReview, 2026, result dated September 30, 2026. A database result, not a guaranteed score for every 8 Gen 5 phone.
OnePlus 15R, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 phone 2,691 single-core and 9,502 multicore in Geekbench 6; 27.96 fps in 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited. Tom’s Guide, 2026. Results reported for one retail handset, not an isolated chip-only laboratory test.
Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 handset A matched result is not established in the cited benchmark sources. Without the same benchmark version and controlled conditions, a numerical lead cannot be calculated responsibly.

Tom’s Guide says it uses Geekbench 6 for CPU performance and 3DMark Wild Life for graphics in its guide. Its OnePlus 15R figures are useful evidence for that particular phone, not a universal score for every 8 Gen 5 device. The available results should not be compared directly across different benchmark suites, devices, or test conditions.

Which is faster for gaming?

The platform specifications make the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 the stronger on-paper choice, but the cited evidence does not establish how large its gaming advantage is over a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 handset. Nor does a short benchmark score show whether a phone can hold a high frame rate during a long session.

What to compare before buying a phone

An SoC comparison is only one part of a phone decision. For example, Tom’s Guide lists the OnePlus 15R with Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, a 6.83-inch OLED display with a 165 Hz adaptive refresh rate, 12 GB RAM, 256 GB storage, a 50 MP main camera, an 8 MP ultrawide camera, and a 32 MP selfie camera. That is one reported configuration; availability and specifications can vary by market.

  • Thermals and battery: Look for long-session gaming or workload tests and battery results taken under comparable conditions.
  • Display and cameras: Compare the actual panel, refresh-rate behavior, camera hardware, and image processing in each handset.
  • Software support and price: Check the manufacturer’s support policy, local price, and regional availability for the specific configuration.

The chipset comparison alone cannot settle those phone-level trade-offs.
