There is not enough directly comparable benchmark evidence to name a definitive winner between Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and Dimensity 8500 Extreme. Qualcomm publishes specifications for the Snapdragon chip, but the available third-party scores cover Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 versus the base Dimensity 8500, while the Dimensity 8500 Extreme scores come from a separate comparison against Dimensity 8450. Those results are useful context, not a controlled head-to-head.

On paper, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 has a higher stated maximum CPU clock and more fully documented platform features. MediaTek’s published performance figures describe the base Dimensity 8500, not confirmed Extreme specifications. For a buying decision, the exact phones—and their cooling, battery, software, display and price—matter as much as the chip name.

What the available benchmarks do—and do not—show

The published numbers do not establish a direct Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 versus Dimensity 8500 Extreme result. Keep the three evidence sets separate: Qualcomm’s chip specifications and vendor performance claims, MediaTek’s infographic for the base Dimensity 8500, and third-party benchmark results from different comparisons.

Evidence Results How to interpret it
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 vs base Dimensity 8500, NanoReview AnTuTu 11: 3,057,215 vs 2,120,347, from 91 vs 81 tests. Geekbench 6 single-core: 2,833 vs 1,555; multi-core: 9,119 vs 6,405, from 20 vs 18 tests. Third-party aggregates that can change as tests are added. The Dimensity chip in this comparison is the base 8500, not the 8500 Extreme. See NanoReview’s comparison.
Dimensity 8500 Extreme vs Dimensity 8450, 91mobiles 8500 Extreme: AnTuTu 2,217,003; Geekbench single-core 1,759; multi-core 7,054. These are 91mobiles’ device-based results in a comparison with Dimensity 8450, not a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 head-to-head or a universal guarantee for every phone. The page lists an April 2026 release for the Extreme. See 91mobiles’ comparison.

The score sets cannot be safely ranked against one another as if all chips had been tested under identical conditions. Benchmark version, handset implementation and test conditions affect results. In particular, the 8500 Extreme’s separate 91mobiles figures should not be substituted for the base 8500 scores in NanoReview’s Snapdragon comparison.

Specifications and platform claims

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5

Qualcomm lists a 64-bit Oryon CPU running at up to 3.8 GHz, an Adreno GPU, Hexagon processor features, an X80 modem with peak speeds up to 10 Gbps download and 3.5 Gbps upload, and FastConnect 7900 with Wi-Fi 7. Qualcomm lists a 3 nm process node on its product comparison pages. These are platform specifications, not a promise that every phone will attain peak network speed or sustain peak performance.

Qualcomm says Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 delivers 36% higher CPU performance, 11% faster Adreno graphics rendering and 13% overall platform power savings versus the previous generation. In its November 26, 2025 announcement, Qualcomm also claimed up to 46% improved NPU performance and 76% better web-browsing responsiveness versus its previous generation. These are Qualcomm’s own generational comparisons, not independent findings or comparisons against Dimensity 8500 Extreme. Qualcomm’s product page and November 2025 announcement provide the platform details.

Dimensity 8500 Extreme and the base 8500 distinction

MediaTek’s Open Resource Architecture page identifies Dimensity 8500 Extreme as a named variant in its Dimensity 8000 series and describes partner customization. It does not, in the material available here, establish that every detailed base-8500 specification carries over unchanged to the Extreme. MediaTek’s architecture page explains the series context.

MediaTek’s infographic is explicitly for Dimensity 8500, not 8500 Extreme. It claims CPU speed up to 3.4 GHz, LPDDR5X memory at 9600 Mbps, an 8-core GPU, up to 25% higher peak GPU performance and up to 32% greater power efficiency in MOBA game titles, alongside NPU 880, 4K HDR video and 5G-A modem performance up to 5.17 Gbps. The GPU comparisons have specific footnotes in the infographic. Treat these as vendor claims for the base 8500, not confirmed Extreme specifications or direct Snapdragon comparisons. Which chip is better for CPU work and gaming?

For the exact two chips in the title, the available evidence does not support a reliable winner for CPU workloads or gaming. Snapdragon 8 Gen 5’s up-to-3.8-GHz CPU figure is higher than the base Dimensity 8500 infographic’s up-to-3.4-GHz figure, but clock speed alone does not predict performance, and that MediaTek figure is not confirmed for the Extreme. Likewise, the base 8500 GPU claims do not establish how the Extreme compares with Snapdragon’s Adreno GPU.

For gaming, sustained performance is more useful than a peak score. A phone’s cooling design, power limits and software tuning can change how long it maintains performance and how hot or power-hungry it becomes. Compare reviews of the actual handsets under the same games and test conditions rather than inferring long-session results from chip branding or peak figures.

Connectivity, AI and camera features

Qualcomm specifies an X80 modem with peak cellular speeds up to 10 Gbps down and 3.5 Gbps up, plus Wi-Fi 7 through FastConnect 7900. MediaTek’s base-8500 infographic lists 5G-A modem performance up to 5.17 Gbps. These are vendor-stated platform capabilities for different products; they do not establish a fair real-world network speed comparison, and the base-8500 modem claim is not confirmed here for the Extreme.

Qualcomm’s Hexagon-related platform features and its stated NPU improvement are not directly comparable to MediaTek’s NPU 880 label in the base-8500 infographic. The available sources do not give a matched AI workload test for the two chips. MediaTek’s infographic also lists 4K HDR video support for the base 8500; it should not be treated as confirmation of the Extreme’s complete camera or video capabilities. Phone makers’ camera sensors, image-processing choices and software determine what features a particular handset actually offers.

What to check before choosing a phone

Chip specifications describe potential platform capabilities, not the whole phone experience. Compare the specific models you can buy, including their regional variants and prices. The Motorola Edge 70 Pro 5G and Motorola Edge 70 Pro+ 5G are listed by 91mobiles as Dimensity 8500 Extreme phones; that listing identifies handsets to investigate, not proof that either will match another phone’s benchmark outcome.

  • Cooling and sustained performance: Look for long-session gaming or stress-test results on the exact model, not only a short peak benchmark.
  • Battery and charging: Compare the handset’s battery capacity and independent endurance results; a chip’s efficiency claim does not determine total battery life.
  • Display, storage and software: Check refresh rate, brightness, memory and storage configuration, update support and the software features you need.
  • Connectivity in your region: Confirm the phone supports your carrier’s bands and that the manufacturer implements the platform features relevant to you.
  • Price and availability: Compare the actual configurations on sale in your market. Chip-level evidence alone does not establish which handset is better value.
