Snapdragon 8 Elite is Qualcomm’s successor-generation flagship mobile platform, replacing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s Kryo CPU with a custom Oryon CPU. Qualcomm reports substantial CPU, graphics, and AI gains, but those platform claims do not guarantee the same improvement in every phone. For a buying decision, compare the specific handsets—not just their chip names.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Snapdragon 8 Elite: specifications
The figures below describe Qualcomm platforms, not the full specification of every phone that uses them. OEMs can choose different configurations, and Qualcomm advises checking the handset’s own specifications for its exact implementation.
| Area | Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | Snapdragon 8 Elite |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Qualcomm Kryo, up to 3.4 GHz; a six-core configuration is also available. Qualcomm specifications | Qualcomm Oryon, listed up to 4.47 GHz; Qualcomm also notes a 4.32 GHz version and a seven-core version. Qualcomm specifications |
| Process | 4 nm in Qualcomm’s 8-series overview. Qualcomm 8-series overview | 3 nm in Qualcomm’s 8-series overview. Qualcomm 8-series overview |
| GPU | Qualcomm Adreno. | Qualcomm Adreno with a sliced architecture. |
| AI | Hexagon NPU; Qualcomm lists generative AI and on-device model support. | Hexagon NPU; Qualcomm describes multimodal on-device AI support. |
| Cellular modem | Snapdragon X75; peak download listed up to 10 Gbps. | Snapdragon X80; peak download listed up to 10 Gbps. |
| Wi-Fi system | FastConnect 7800. | FastConnect 7900. |
The clearest architectural change is the CPU: Elite moves from Kryo to Qualcomm’s custom Oryon design and has a higher advertised maximum clock. Those peak clocks do not by themselves predict how fast a phone will feel or how well it will sustain performance.
Which is faster?
Qualcomm says Snapdragon 8 Elite delivers 45% higher CPU performance and 44% improved power efficiency compared with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Those are Qualcomm-reported platform comparisons, not guarantees for every handset. Qualcomm explicitly cautions that results vary with OEM implementation and other factors. Qualcomm says its CPU performance basis includes Geekbench 6.2 single-core and multi-core, Speedometer, and AnTuTu CPU. It also reports that Elite produced 62% better responsiveness in Chrome browsing than Gen 3 in Speedometer. Treat that as a result for a particular workload, not as an across-the-board speed advantage in apps, games, or everyday use. Qualcomm’s October 21, 2024 launch article
These numbers help describe Qualcomm’s claimed platform potential, but they are not a matched comparison of retail phones with identical cooling, software, and power settings. A phone’s thermal design and software policy can affect both short bursts and sustained performance. The available platform evidence does not establish a universal benchmark score or battery-life advantage for every Elite phone.
Is Snapdragon 8 Elite better for gaming?
Qualcomm claims up to 40% improved graphics performance and 40% better power efficiency for Elite versus Gen 3. The GPU differs in architecture, but these vendor-reported platform figures do not mean a specific game will run at a particular frame rate or improve by the same percentage on a given handset. For gaming, look for tests of the exact phones you are considering. Useful evidence includes frame rate at the same game settings, stability over a longer session, device temperature, and battery drain. A single peak-performance result does not show whether a phone can maintain performance after it heats up.
What changes for AI and connectivity?
AI capabilities
Both platforms use a Hexagon NPU. Qualcomm claims 45% faster AI performance for Elite and describes support for multimodal on-device AI. These are platform capabilities and claims; whether a particular feature is available or faster depends on the phone maker’s software and the app using it.
Cellular and Wi-Fi
Elite moves from the Snapdragon X75 modem to the X80, while Qualcomm lists peak cellular downloads of up to 10 Gbps for both platforms. That is a platform maximum, not a forecast of the speed a user will see: network coverage, carrier, handset design, and local conditions matter. The Wi-Fi systems also differ—FastConnect 7900 on Elite and FastConnect 7800 on Gen 3—but the platform names alone do not establish a measured improvement in everyday use.

How to choose between phones using these chips
There is no universal winner based on chipset name alone. Before choosing, verify the exact phone model and configuration, then compare device-level evidence on the factors that matter to you:
- Exact chip variant: check the handset’s listed chipset and clock configuration; Elite may use a 4.32 GHz version rather than the listed 4.47 GHz maximum.
- Sustained performance and heat: look for repeatable CPU and GPU tests, including results after extended workloads.
- Your games and apps: compare frame rates and settings in the games you play, or performance in the applications you rely on.
- Battery behavior: seek comparisons under the same workload rather than inferring battery life from Qualcomm’s platform efficiency claim.
- Whole-phone value: consider software and update support, display, camera, storage, price, and availability in your region.
The cited platform information does not establish current availability, regional variants, prices, or a matched retail-phone test. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and independent tests for the specific models on sale where you live.
Bottom line
Snapdragon 8 Elite is the newer platform, with a custom Oryon CPU, different GPU and connectivity systems, and higher performance claims from Qualcomm. Those claims indicate potential, not guaranteed results across all phones. To decide whether an Elite phone is worth choosing over a Gen 3 phone, compare the actual models’ sustained performance, heat, battery behavior, features, and price.
