First identify what is silent: Snapchat notifications, audio recorded into video Snaps, or sound playing inside the app. Each points to different settings. Work through the matching checks below; the available guidance does not establish one cause unique to the Galaxy S23.
Start with the sound that is missing
- No alert when a Snap arrives: check notification permission, notification categories, Do Not Disturb, and notification volume.
- Video Snaps record no voice or other sound: check silent mode and microphone permission, then compare a recording in another app.
- Sound will not play inside Snapchat: check the phone’s sound mode and volume, then troubleshoot the app and its connection.
Fix silent Snapchat notifications
Allow Snapchat notifications and category alerts
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Snapchat and make sure notifications are allowed.
- If notification categories are available, open the relevant category and check that alerts and sound are enabled. If categories are missing, look under Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Manage notification categories for each app and enable category management.
Samsung notes that menu names and paths can vary with the device and One UI version. Its notification guide was last updated May 21, 2026. Samsung’s notification troubleshooting guide covers these settings.
Check sound mode, Do Not Disturb, and volume
- Make sure the phone is not in Mute mode and that Do Not Disturb is not blocking Snapchat alerts. Samsung also supports exceptions for notifications while Do Not Disturb is active.
- Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume and raise Notifications. A notification can appear on screen but be inaudible when this volume is low.
- Check Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements > Mute all sounds and turn it off if enabled.
Samsung’s Galaxy sound settings guide describes Sound, Vibrate, and Mute modes and per-app notification sounds. It also explains Separate app sound, which routes an app’s media audio to a connected Bluetooth device separately from other sounds; it is not a demonstrated fix for silent notification alerts.
Fix video Snaps that record without audio
Check microphone access and sound mode
- Turn off silent mode and make sure the device volume is not muted.
- Confirm Snapchat has microphone permission. On Android, review it in the phone’s app permissions; Snapchat explains the permission in its Android permissions guide. Microphone access is what Snapchat uses to record audio in Snaps and video chat.

Compare with a recording outside Snapchat
- Make a short video with the Samsung Camera app or record a voice memo with a recorder app.
- Play the test back. If it also has no sound, the issue may extend beyond Snapchat; Snapchat advises contacting the device manufacturer in that case.
- If the other recording has sound, continue with Snapchat-specific troubleshooting rather than assuming the phone needs a repair.
Refresh Snapchat if the issue is app-specific
- Update Snapchat, then fully close and reopen it.
- Restart the Galaxy S23 and check that the internet connection is working.
- If a feature still does not work, report it in Snapchat at Settings > Support and Safety > Bugs and Suggestions > Report a Bug. Snapchat’s app troubleshooting guide recommends these general steps.
If sound plays in some places but not others
Separate app media routing from notifications and recording. Samsung’s Separate app sound setting can send an app’s media audio to a Bluetooth device, so check the selected output if Snapchat playback seems to be going to the wrong place. Notification alerts have their own category and volume controls, while recording depends on microphone access. Changing one setting may not fix the other symptoms.
The cited Snapchat support pages do not display publication dates and provide general Android guidance. Neither they nor Samsung’s general guidance establishes a widespread or Galaxy S23-specific Snapchat sound defect.
