Snapchat stands apart because it is not built around one public feed. Its camera, private messaging, short-form video discovery, public creator pages, and parental controls are tied together—but each serves a different audience and privacy level.
The distinctions become clearer when you compare Snapchat’s publishing options. A user can send a Snap to friends, post to a public Story, submit a video to Spotlight, or save selected content to a Public Profile. Those choices affect who can see the content, whether the creator’s name is displayed, and how long the content remains available.
1. Snapchat separates private sharing from public publishing
Many social platforms encourage users to publish to one central audience. Snapchat gives you several destinations instead. After creating a Snap, the Send To screen lets eligible users choose between My Story · Friends and My Story · Public.

For accounts aged 16 and older, Snapchat now distinguishes My Story · Public from My Story · Friends. If you remember the old Everyone Story privacy option, public posting has moved to the separate public destination. My Friends and Custom remain options for the friends-only Story.

Followers find public Stories in the Following section of the Stories page. They can follow an account from Spotlight, Discover, or by tapping Add on its Public Profile. For creators aged 18 or older with an established wide audience, Snapchat may also recommend public Stories in Discover.
2. Spotlight is a discovery engine with built-in trend search
Spotlight is Snapchat’s short-form video area. To open it in the mobile app, tap the Spotlight icon at the bottom of the camera screen. You can also use Spotlight on the web at web.snapchat.com or www.snapchat.com/spotlight.
Its useful difference is that discovery can happen from the video itself. While watching a Spotlight Snap, Snapchat may show a suggested search label—for example, an event name or a label containing Live or Trending. Tap that label to open Spotlight search for related Snaps.

It is nevertheless a practical way to move from one video to a cluster of posts about the same event or trend instead of relying only on a general search.
How to find event-related Spotlight videos
- Open Snapchat and tap the Spotlight icon.
- Watch a Snap that appears relevant to an event or trend.
- Look for a suggested search label on the Snap.
- Tap the label to view related Spotlight Snaps.
Spotlight submissions are not automatically eligible simply because they are vertical videos. They must comply with Snapchat’s Community Guidelines, Spotlight Guidelines, Terms of Service, and Spotlight Terms.
3. Public Profiles turn an account into a creator page
A Public Profile gives Snapchat a more structured creator layer without removing the private profile used for friends. To open it, go to the camera screen, tap your Bitmoji in the upper-left corner, and select My Public Profile.
A Public Profile can include a profile photo, bio, description, location, Stories, and Lenses. It can also allow subscriptions, display a subscriber count, and provide Public Story, Lens, and Audience Insights. Public Stories added to the profile are separate from My Story.

That separation is important: creating a Public Profile does not change your existing contact or Story privacy settings. You can have a public-facing creator page while keeping ordinary friend communication and friends-only Stories governed by their existing settings.
Public Profile versus Creator Account
Snapchat distinguishes a standard Public Profile from a Creator Account. The listed creator-oriented features—such as category selection and the expanded publishing and insight tools—are available with a Creator Account. A standard Public Profile cannot select a category.
The Chat button normally appears for friends, not subscribers. A Creator Account or Business Profile can make it available to subscribers by setting Who Can Contact Me to Everyone.
There are also two common misconceptions:
- A Public Profile does not automatically make someone a Snap Star. Snapchat considers engagement, authenticity, content quality, notability, and cultural relevance.
- Snapchat does not automatically create a Business Profile. Businesses create and manage those profiles through Ads Manager.
4. Snapchat lets creators curate saved Stories separately from temporary posts
A public Story is useful for current updates, while a Public Profile can act as a more deliberate collection of content. To add a Story to a Public Profile:

- Open Profile → Public Profile.
- Tap Add a Story to your Profile.
- Select Snaps or photos from the Camera Roll.
- Tap Add, then Next.
- Set the Story title and cover.
- Tap Finish.
Only videos that you proactively save remain on the Public Profile. That gives creators control over which posts become part of their longer-term public presentation rather than treating every public Story as permanent profile material.
To edit an existing Public Profile Story, press and hold it, tap Review & Edit Story, tap +, choose additional content, and then use Add → Next → Finish.
You can share a complete Public Profile Story by opening My Public Profile, pressing and holding the Story tile, and selecting Share Story. To share one Snap from inside it, open the Snap, tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, and select Share Snap.

For Snap Star, Business, or Publisher accounts, recently posted Public Stories are managed under My Stories in the profile. The Public Profile remains at the top of the profile and contains saved profile content and Insights; it is not where those accounts manage newly posted Public Stories.
5. Public posting changes depending on the user’s age
Snapchat’s public features are not identical for teenagers and adults. Users aged 16 and 17 can have a publicly viewable content page with a profile photo, cover photo, and bio. They can add or save Snaps, post videos to Spotlight with their username shown, post to a public Story, view and quote Story replies and comments, and view analytics for public Stories and Spotlights.
Some safeguards remain more restrictive for this age group:
- Spotlight remixing is turned off by default.
- Spotlight Snaps are not saved to the Public Profile unless the user intentionally adds them.
- Users under 18 cannot post to Snap Map with their username shown or their profile attached.
- Public Story replies may be available from followers, but those followers cannot start a chat unless they are mutually accepted friends.
- By default, users under 18 communicate with mutually accepted friends, or with friends and phone contacts if that option is selected.
Users under 16 have a different experience. They use My Profile, which is friends-only and does not support a bio or followers. Non-friends cannot view their saved Stories, Spotlight posts, or reposts. The setup path is Bitmoji → My Profile → Create My Profile.
6. Family Center exposes safety information without reading chats
Snapchat’s Family Center is another feature that differentiates it from a simple messaging app. It gives parents visibility into certain connection and safety information without exposing the contents of private conversations.
To find it, open the camera screen and tap the Bitmoji or Story icon at the top to open My Account. Scroll to Family Center under My Friends. You can also use My Account → gear icon → Settings → App & Privacy → Family Center, or search the app for family, safety, or parent.
Family Center can show the teen’s five most recent conversations without showing message contents. Tapping View All Recents shows conversations from the last seven days. Parents can also see active group-chat members, existing friends, and friends added in the last seven days; View All Friends opens the complete friend list.

Controls available in Family Center

The sensitive-content setting affects areas such as Stories and Spotlight, including sensitive or suggestive content, but Snapchat warns that no filter is perfect. When Disable My AI is enabled, My AI does not store or process the teen’s queries and does not reply to the teen’s messages.
Family Center is deliberately limited. It is designed to show connection metadata and provide safety controls—not to let parents read private conversations.
7. Snapchat combines public attribution with privacy choices
Snapchat’s public features do not all expose identity in the same way. Only Snapchatters with a Public Profile can have their display name associated with a Spotlight Snap. This gives creators a way to connect public video discovery with a recognizable profile, while users without a Public Profile have a different attribution setup.
The platform also lets a creator choose whether content is merely distributed publicly or intentionally saved as profile material. A public Story can reach followers, a Spotlight Snap can enter discovery, and a selected Story can be added to a Public Profile. Those are separate decisions rather than one all-or-nothing publishing switch.

The strongest differentiator is the combination of audience controls and publishing surfaces. Snapchat supports private friend sharing, public Stories, algorithmic Spotlight discovery, curated Public Profiles, age-specific public posting rules, and Family Center controls in the same app.
That structure is more nuanced than simply choosing between a private account and a public feed. It lets a casual user remain focused on friends, gives creators tools for public growth, and gives families controls that reveal who a teen is connecting with without revealing private message text.

How do I open Snapchat Spotlight?

Does creating a Public Profile make all of my Snapchat content public?
