Sanity testing is not consistently distinct: the ISTQB glossary reproduction consulted here lists it as a synonym for smoke testing with the same definition. Regression testing has a different purpose: after a change, it checks whether previously tested areas that were not meant to change have developed defects.
How the three tests differ
| Test | Main question | Typical trigger | Scope and decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smoke | Do the build’s main functions work well enough to start planned testing? | A new build or candidate is handed over for further testing. | A broad check of essential functionality. A failure may block deeper testing. |
| Sanity | Do the main functions work properly before planned testing begins? | Usage varies by team. | The consulted ISTQB glossary reproduction gives it the same definition as smoke testing and lists the terms as synonyms. Teams may define the term differently, so agree on local usage. |
| Regression | Did a software or environment change cause a defect in previously tested behavior outside the intended change? | After a modification, such as a fix, or an environment change. | Tests selected from previously tested behavior that may be at risk; the goal is to find unintended side effects. |
The practical distinction is clearest when you ask what decision the result supports: smoke testing helps decide whether to proceed with planned testing; regression testing checks whether a change has affected other behavior. Sanity may mean the same readiness check as smoke, or something else under a team’s local convention.
Smoke testing: a readiness check
Run smoke tests when a build is delivered for further testing. Check the essential paths that would make more detailed testing useful—for example, whether users can sign in, reach a key screen, and complete a basic transaction. If a core path fails, the team can pause broader testing and report the build as not ready.
Smoke testing is about breadth across key functionality, not proving that every feature works. Passing it means planned testing can begin; it does not establish that the product is defect-free.

Sanity testing: agree on what your team means
There is no dependable universal boundary between sanity and smoke in the cited glossary. The reproduced ISTQB glossary lists the terms as synonyms and provides the same main-functionality definition for both. Some teams use “sanity” for a focused check after a limited change, but treat that as a local convention, not a rule that applies everywhere.
To prevent handoff confusion, document the scope and purpose in test plans or build notes. If your team calls a focused post-change check “sanity,” say what it covers and what decision it supports instead of relying on the label alone.

Regression testing: look for side effects after a change
Regression testing follows a modification to software or its environment. It checks selected, previously tested behavior that was not intended to change but might have been affected. The selection should reflect the change and the risks around it; the term does not mean that every test must always be rerun.
Keep regression testing separate from confirmation testing. Confirmation testing checks whether a particular fix resolved the reported problem. Regression testing checks whether the change caused failures elsewhere. A team may need both after fixing a defect.

Example: a checkout change
- New build arrives: a smoke check verifies that a user can sign in, add an item, and reach payment. If those essential paths work, the team can begin planned testing.
- Tax calculation changes: a targeted check confirms that the changed calculation behaves as intended. Call this “sanity” only if that is your team’s defined usage.
- Check for side effects: regression tests exercise previously working checkout behavior that could have been affected, such as other payment or order paths.
Testing is more than running test cases
ISTQB Foundation Level syllabus material reproduced by ASTQB describes testing as work that assesses software quality and helps reduce the risk of software failure in operation. It includes static activities, such as review and analysis, as well as dynamic testing by executing software. Testing and debugging are separate activities: testing can reveal a failure, while debugging investigates and addresses its cause.
Choosing the right test and reporting the result
- Use smoke when a build needs a broad check of essential functions before planned testing.
- Use regression after a change when you need to check previously tested behavior that may have been affected outside the intended change.
- Use “sanity” carefully: state the actual scope and purpose, because the term may overlap with smoke or reflect a team-specific convention.
- Report the decision clearly: say what was checked, what failed, and whether the build is ready for the next testing activity.
Or skip the browser setup
If your testing workflow needs website screenshots as evidence, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can capture a page; its browser workflow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Those cleanup steps can be turned off individually. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of a page. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options and setup.
