To connect a smart TV to Wi-Fi, open its network or internet settings, choose the wireless connection option, select your home Wi-Fi name, enter the password, and confirm. Menu labels differ by TV brand, model, and software version, so use the instructions below as a general route rather than a universal menu path.
What you need before connecting
- Your home Wi-Fi network name, also called its SSID.
- The network password. Enter it carefully; passwords are case-sensitive on Roku devices.
- Access to the TV’s remote and network settings.
If you do not know the Wi-Fi name or password, ask the person who manages the network before changing router settings.
How to connect your TV to Wi-Fi
- Open the TV’s Settings, then find a section named Network, Internet, or similar.
- Choose Wi-Fi or Wireless rather than a wired connection.
- Select the name of your home Wi-Fi network. If it is not listed, look for a rescan or refresh option.
- Enter the password exactly, including capital letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Confirm the connection and follow any on-screen prompts. If the TV offers a connection test, run it.
For example, LG says that 2021-and-later TVs running webOS 6.0 or later use Settings > All Settings > General > Network > Internet Connection > Wi Fi Connection. That route is specific to the stated LG models and software; other TVs may use different labels. LG’s internet-connection guide provides its model-specific guidance.
For a Roku streaming device or Roku TV, the initial setup prompts you to choose a network and enter its password. To change the connection later, Roku’s route is Settings > Network > Set up connection, then choose Wired or Wireless and follow the prompts. See Roku’s connection instructions. Samsung also directs users to network settings, but the precise path can vary; use the instructions for your model in Samsung’s internet-connection support or Samsung Singapore’s network setup guide.

Some TVs offer WPS as an alternative to typing a password. Availability depends on the TV and router, and many routers do not support WPS push-button setup. Check your router’s specifications before choosing it. Sony’s wireless setup instructions are for the specified model family; Sony provides model-specific guidance.
If the TV cannot find or join the network
Work through these checks in order. The aim is to determine whether the issue is the saved credentials, the TV, the router, or internet service.

1. Verify the network name and password
Make sure the TV is trying to join the intended Wi-Fi network, not a nearby network with a similar name. Re-enter the password, checking capitalization and characters. If you are unsure of either credential, ask the network administrator. Roku’s setup guidance notes that its Wi-Fi password entry is case-sensitive and recommends rescanning when a network is missing.
2. Check another device on the same Wi-Fi
Try connecting a phone, tablet, or computer to the same network. If that device also cannot connect, investigate the router, modem, or internet service rather than assuming the TV is the cause. 3. Restart the TV and router or modem
Restart the TV and the router or modem, then try connecting again. Use the devices’ normal restart or power-cycle procedures; avoid factory-resetting the TV or router as an early step. Roku includes restarting the device and router among its troubleshooting suggestions in its Wi-Fi connection guidance.
4. Try a phone hotspot to isolate the problem
If the TV still will not connect, try joining a phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot, if your phone plan and TV support it. If the TV connects to the hotspot, LG says the TV is working properly and the issue may be related to the router or internet service provider. 5. Separate Wi-Fi connection from internet access
A TV can connect to the router over Wi-Fi even when the router cannot reach the internet. If your TV or streaming device offers a network test, use it to check both the local connection and internet access. Roku’s test distinguishes whether the device sees the network from whether it can reach the internet; its steps are at Roku’s connection-check guide.
6. Address a weak signal
If the connection is intermittent or signal is weak, move the TV or streaming device closer to the router if practical. Persistent coverage problems may call for reviewing router placement or considering a mesh system, but a failed first connection does not automatically mean you need new equipment. Wi-Fi or Ethernet: which should you use?

Ethernet is optional; it is not required to complete Wi-Fi setup. Check the TV or streaming device’s model-specific instructions before relying on a port or adapter. LG documents wired networking in its connection guide, and Roku covers supported wired connections in its setup instructions.
