A smart TV usually buffers because its internet connection is weak or unstable, but a TV or streaming-app update may also be needed. To find the cause, check whether the problem affects one app, the TV’s connection, or several devices on your home network before changing your broadband plan or buying equipment.
Check whether buffering affects one app, the TV, or your whole network
Start by testing a different streaming app on the TV. Then check another device, such as a phone or computer, on the same home network. Netflix recommends trying another internet-connected app or running the device’s network test when troubleshooting connection errors (Netflix connection troubleshooting).
| What you observe | Where to investigate first | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Only one app buffers on the TV | That app or the TV’s software | Test another app and check the app or TV maker’s update guidance. Netflix lists a device update as a possible cause of buffering. |
| Several apps buffer on the TV, but other devices work | The TV’s connection or software | Run the TV’s network test, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if the TV and router support it. |
| Several devices or apps buffer | The home network or internet service | Restart the modem and router, then contact your internet service provider (ISP) if the problem continues. |
| Wi-Fi buffers but playback is stable over Ethernet | Wi-Fi coverage or wireless conditions | Improve router placement and retest before considering coverage equipment. |
These patterns help narrow the investigation, but they do not prove a single cause. For example, stable playback over Ethernet points toward the wireless path, but it does not rule out every app, TV, or ISP issue.
Restart the TV and home network
A restart can clear a temporary connection problem. Netflix’s smart-TV guidance recommends unplugging the modem and, if separate, the router for 30 seconds. Follow this order:
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Turn off the TV.
- Unplug the modem and any separate router for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and wait for it to settle.
- Reconnect the router, if you have a separate one, and allow it to restart.
- Turn on the TV and try the affected stream again.
Reconnect times vary by equipment, so give the network time to come back before testing. See Netflix’s smart-TV and TV-connected-device buffering steps.
Improve the TV’s Wi-Fi conditions
If the TV uses Wi-Fi, make one placement change at a time and retest playback. Netflix suggests moving the TV or router closer together, placing the router in an open spot off the floor, and keeping it away from other wireless devices and appliances (Netflix buffering guidance).
Rank #2
- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Move the router or TV closer temporarily to see whether playback improves.
- Place the router in an open, elevated location rather than on the floor or inside an enclosed cabinet.
- Keep it away from appliances and other wireless devices where practical.
If moving closer improves playback, that is evidence that Wi-Fi conditions may be contributing. It does not establish that the internet plan itself is too slow.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet connection
If both the TV and router have Ethernet ports and a cable can reach, connect the TV directly to the router and test the same stream. If Ethernet works reliably while Wi-Fi does not, focus next on wireless coverage and placement. A wired connection is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix: it cannot resolve an ISP outage or an app or TV problem.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Use a cable only if the connection is practical for your setup. It does not increase the speed included in your internet plan.
Do not diagnose from the plan speed alone
A speed test can provide useful context, especially when run near the TV, but a single result does not show whether the connection stays stable during playback. The advertised maximum speed of a broadband plan is not the same as a measurement of the TV’s connection at the time buffering occurs.

Streaming services publish recommended connection speeds, and their requirements can vary by service and playback quality. Netflix’s current guidance is available at Netflix’s internet connection speed recommendations. Check its live recommendations for the quality level you use; no one speed figure applies to every service and setup.
When to contact your internet provider
If several devices or apps have trouble, or restarting the network does not help, contact your ISP. Ask it to check for a local outage, modem or router problems, and incorrect network settings. Netflix advises customers to tell the provider whether the issue affects one device or several and whether the TV connects by Wi-Fi or cable (Netflix buffering guidance).
