For discreet overnight tracking without a wrist screen, a smart ring may suit you better. For on-device feedback and workout features such as built-in GPS, a fitness band may be the better choice. Neither form factor is a proven accuracy winner across sleep and health metrics: compare the specific device, its fit, software, battery settings, cost, and phone compatibility.

How each form factor fits sleep tracking
Choose a ring if you want less on your wrist
A ring places sensors on a finger and avoids wearing a band on the wrist overnight. Whether that feels more comfortable is personal; rings can feel unfamiliar, and fit is crucial. Oura recommends using the sizing kit for the correct generation and wearing the ring with its sensors toward the palm side of the finger. A poor fit can affect the experience and readings. Oura documents sleep-related measurements including heart rate, heart-rate variability, respiration rate, and blood oxygen sensing. The company says Ring 4 uses red and infrared LEDs for overnight blood oxygen measurement, green and infrared PPG sensors for heart-rate measurements, and a digital temperature sensor for average body-temperature variation. Oura does not offer a smart alarm: the company says the ring does not use sounds, lights, vibrations, or other alert functions. If you want an on-wrist display or alerts, a ring may not meet that need. Oura General FAQs
Choose a band if you want wrist-based feedback
The Charge 6 has an AMOLED screen, so it can show information on the wrist rather than relying on a screenless device and its app. Its built-in GPS and GLONASS can also be useful for exercise tracking. Wristbands and finger rings feel different during sleep, so personal comfort matters more than category labels. For a band, Google advises keeping the device clean and dry after it gets wet or sweaty.
Health metrics and accuracy: compare devices, not labels
Both categories can track overlapping signals, but their sensors, placement, algorithms, and app features differ. A metric available on one model may be missing, limited, or presented differently on another. There is no established controlled, direct accuracy comparison here between Oura Ring 4 and Fitbit Charge 6 across sleep stages and health measurements. Oura says its sensors have been tested against laboratory results in multiple validation studies, but that does not establish that Ring 4 outperforms Charge 6. A 2025 systematic review surveys smart-ring sensing research, including 11 sleep-focused studies in its classification of the literature; that study count is not a performance result for either of these products. Treat both as consumer wellness trackers, not diagnostic tools. Oura says its ring is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor, or prevent medical conditions. Google says Charge 6’s SpO2 feature is not intended to diagnose or treat a medical condition, and its skin-temperature variation feature is not for medical purposes. Battery life depends on settings and test conditions
Battery estimates are not directly comparable unless you account for how each was measured and which features are enabled.

Workouts, durability, and daily use
If you want GPS without carrying your phone, the Charge 6’s built-in GPS is a documented advantage over the screenless Oura Ring 4 example. A screen also makes quick on-device feedback possible. Oura is designed for passive tracking and app review rather than real-time workout display. A ring may be more exposed to scratches during weight training; consider removing it for activities where it could be knocked or pressed. For a band, account for wrist comfort and care: Google recommends cleaning and drying the Charge 6 after it gets wet or sweaty. For a ring, sizing is a purchase prerequisite, not a cosmetic detail; use the generation-specific sizing kit and check the fit before settling on a size. Oura Ring 4 support
