For everyday breaks and overnight use, sleep is usually the more convenient choice for a MacBook: it uses much less power than an active Mac and wakes faster than starting up after shutdown. Shut down when hardware work or a peripheral’s instructions require it, or when you need to troubleshoot an unresponsive Mac. Apple does not say that shutting down every day is necessary to protect battery health.

What sleep and shutdown mean for your MacBook

Sleep leaves the Mac on in a low-power state. Apple says a sleeping Mac consumes much less power than an active one, and wakes faster than a Mac that has been shut down. That is a comparison, not a promise of zero battery drain: Apple’s guidance does not give a universal sleep-drain rate or an amount of time after which shutdown becomes more efficient. Apple’s Mac User Guide says, “When you’re not using your Mac, you can save energy by putting it to sleep.”

Safe sleep saves the current state, including open apps and documents. Apple says this protects that information if the Mac completely shuts down during sleep because its battery runs down or is replaced. This is not a substitute for saving important work. Apple explains how safe sleep works.

Which should you use for daily breaks and overnight?

Use sleep for routine pauses

For a short break or the end of an ordinary workday, sleep lets you return to your open work without waiting for a full startup. On a Mac laptop, closing the display puts it to sleep; opening the display wakes it. You can also choose Apple menu > Sleep. Apple says a sleeping Mac can be woken by opening the display or using the keyboard, mouse, or trackpad. See Apple’s sleep and wake instructions.

There is no universal overnight cutoff

Apple’s documentation does not establish a number of hours—eight hours or otherwise—after which you should shut down instead of sleeping. If you are concerned about battery use while the Mac is idle, review the power and battery settings described below rather than assuming that nightly shutdown is required.

Does shutting down every day improve battery health?

Apple identifies battery chemical age, temperature history, and charging patterns as factors in battery aging. It does not say that choosing shutdown over sleep every night materially extends battery lifespan. Battery health management monitors temperature and charging patterns and may temporarily reduce the battery’s maximum charge to slow chemical aging. Details are in Apple’s battery health management guidance.

Apple says a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its model’s maximum cycle count under normal conditions. This is a design target, not a guarantee for an individual battery; cycle-count limits vary by Mac model. A cycle also does not mean one plug-in: using half the battery one day and half the next, then recharging, adds up to one cycle. See Apple’s battery cycle-count guidance.

Settings to check if idle battery use concerns you

  • Low Power Mode: Apple lists this as a way to reduce energy use. Find it in Battery settings if the option is available for your Mac and macOS version. Apple’s laptop battery settings guide describes the available controls.
  • Optimized Battery Charging: This feature learns your charging routine and may delay charging past 80% in certain cases to reduce the time the battery spends fully charged. Availability and behavior depend on the Mac and software.
  • Charge Limit: On qualifying Apple silicon Macs running macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later, Apple says you can select a charge limit from 80% to 100%. Check your own Battery settings; not every Mac has every option. See Apple’s charging optimization guidance.
  • Wake-on-network behavior: Battery settings also include controls related to waking for network access. Review these if the Mac appears to use power while idle and you do not need that behavior.

When shutdown is the better choice

  • Before internal installation work: Apple instructs users to shut down before opening the Mac case for internal work. Follow the instructions for the specific installation. Apple’s shutdown instructions cover the procedure.
  • When a peripheral requires it: Some devices call for the Mac to be shut down during setup or use. Check the peripheral’s documentation and follow its requirements.
  • When the Mac is unresponsive: A forced shutdown can be a troubleshooting step, but Apple warns that unsaved changes may be lost. Use it only when the Mac cannot be shut down normally.

For a normal shutdown, choose Apple menu > Shut Down. Save your work first. Apple notes that app windows can be set to reopen when you log back in, but shutdown is not the same as preserving the active session through sleep.
