A Slack bot can send a question to Claude, but Claude does not automatically know what is in your repository. To answer codebase questions, your app must either retrieve relevant code and include it in the request, or pass the task to a running Claude Code session that already has project context. Those approaches solve different problems: retrieval provides bounded, inspectable context; a live session can work with its own files and tools.

Choose how the bot should receive questions

Start with the Slack interaction that matches how people will use the bot. Slack’s official “Building AI Apps in Slack with Bolt JS” workshop walks through app configuration, installation, scopes, and an assistant interface, and includes Anthropic among its provider options. A separate TypeScript guide by ClaudeGuide.io, last verified April 30, 2026, describes mentions, direct messages, slash commands, event handlers, threaded replies, and rate limiting.

Interaction Useful when Design consideration
Slash command, such as /ask People should deliberately invoke the bot with a question. Define how the command receives the question and where the answer is posted.
@mention The bot should participate when someone addresses it in a channel or thread. Configure the relevant event handling and reply in the originating conversation.
Assistant interface You want a dedicated conversational surface in Slack. Follow Slack’s assistant setup and choose the required scopes and event subscriptions for that surface.

Do not copy a scope list from an unrelated example. The permissions and event subscriptions depend on the interaction you choose and the data the bot needs to access.

Decide where repository context comes from

There are two distinct ways to give the model project context. A Slack bot repository called claude-code-slack documents both: it can control a Claude Code process in a server-side tmux session, or make independent calls to the Anthropic API. In the first mode, the session retains its working project context. In the second, each API call is separate; it does not inherit the tmux session or gain access to server files unless your application supplies relevant content.

Approach Context and behavior Best fit
Retrieve code, then call the Claude API Your service searches an index and sends selected snippets with the question. The context is bounded by what your retrieval and prompt include. Repeatable question answering where the bot should explain code without acting on the repository.
Route work to a live Claude Code session The running session supplies its own working context and may use its available tools. This is not the same as an independent API request. Tasks that need an agent to inspect or work with files in an already configured project session.

Choose based on the bot’s job, not just the model name. A read-only explanation service and an agent that can operate on a project have different access and control requirements.

Build the request path from Slack to an answer

  1. Install a Slack app. Use Slack’s Bolt JS workshop as a setup reference for configuring the app, manifest, scopes, tokens, and installation. Select one interaction surface and configure only the events and permissions it requires.
  2. Handle the incoming question. In the Bolt handler, extract the user’s question, retain relevant thread or conversation context, and associate the request with the Slack thread that should receive the answer. The ClaudeGuide.io TypeScript tutorial covers these interaction patterns, though its labels and setup should be checked against the Slack app surface you actually choose.
  3. Retrieve project material or route to a session. For an API-based design, search a code index and package the most relevant snippets with file and line information. For the session-based design, send the request to the intended live Claude Code process instead; do not assume an API request shares that session’s state.
  4. Ask for a grounded response. Tell Claude to answer from the supplied code, distinguish direct evidence from inference, and say when the material does not answer the question. Return the result to the same Slack thread so the explanation stays attached to the request.

Index code in a way that preserves useful structure

A retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system searches project material first, then provides selected passages to the model. A basic document-RAG tutorial by Shamim Shams, published June 6, 2026, demonstrates ingesting text, Markdown, and PDFs into a local ChromaDB vector collection and retrieving chunks for Claude. That is a useful outline of the retrieval flow, but it is an internal-documents example—not evidence that arbitrary text chunking works well for source code.

Rank #2

For code, preserve boundaries that help a retrieved passage make sense. The public code-rag-engine example fetches Python files from GitHub and chunks around function and class boundaries using tree-sitter. It indexes those chunks in Qdrant, combines dense retrieval with TF-IDF BM25 using reciprocal-rank fusion, reranks candidates through a hosted Jina service, and asks a Groq model to produce answers with file and line labels. This demonstrates one possible code-search design; its answer-generation model is Groq, not Claude, and its configuration is not a universal best setting.

  • Keep the repository, path, and line range attached to every indexed chunk so retrieved evidence can be identified later.
  • Use chunk boundaries appropriate to the language and question. A function-level chunk may help with behavior; a class-level chunk may supply wider context.
  • Consider hybrid retrieval when both semantic similarity and exact terms matter. Dense search can find conceptually related code, while keyword search can help surface exact identifiers. Whether combining them helps depends on the repository and query set.
  • Include enough surrounding code to explain the result without sending the entire repository into each request.

Make answers checkable, not just fluent

Ask the model to attach file and line references to claims about implementation, then make those references visible in Slack. A reader should be able to verify whether a cited function actually does what the answer says. If retrieval returns no relevant evidence, the bot should state that it cannot determine the answer from the available code rather than fill the gap with a confident guess.

Keep interpretation separate from evidence. For example, the bot can say that a function calls a particular helper and then label any conclusion about the broader system as an inference. This is especially important when the retrieved snippet does not show callers, configuration, or related code.

Keep the index aligned with repository changes

Retrieval quality depends on whether the indexed code reflects the current branch or revision users are asking about. The code-rag-engine example rebuilds its full index after each GitHub push via a webhook; its repository lists incremental indexing as future work, not as an existing feature.

A full rebuild is straightforward to reason about, but it can increase update time and indexing work as a repository grows. Incremental indexing can reduce repeated work, but requires correctly identifying changed files and removing or replacing stale chunks. Whichever approach you choose, expose the indexed revision or last successful update to operators so they can diagnose answers based on old code.

Protect Slack, Anthropic, and repository access

The claude-code-slack README lists Slack bot and app tokens and an Anthropic API key in its environment setup, and warns against committing the environment file that contains sensitive tokens. Store credentials outside source control, restrict access to them, and rotate them if they are exposed.

Minimize the repositories and Slack content the service can access. Configure permissions for the chosen interaction rather than granting broad access by default, and decide which users or channels are allowed to query each repository. These are prudent access controls, not guarantees supplied by Slack or Anthropic.

Before enabling a bot for a team, test questions against code changes, exact symbol names, and cases where the answer is absent from the retrieved material. Review both the cited snippets and the bot’s abstentions; a response that sounds plausible is not proof that retrieval found the right code.
