The best setup is not a choice between a helmet and pads: wear a skateboarding-certified helmet, wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads together. Each covers a different area, and the available guidance does not rank one item as more effective overall than the others. Fit and activity-specific labeling matter most when choosing.
How the four types of skateboard safety gear compare
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends a helmet designed for skateboarding along with wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads. These items cover different body areas, so think of them as complementary rather than competing choices.
| Gear | What to check | What the guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Helmet | It is intended and labeled for skateboarding; it sits snugly and level, with the chin strap fastened. | CPSC recommends a skateboarding helmet. CDC says no helmet is concussion-proof and advises replacing one after a serious crash or if damaged. |
| Wrist guards | Choose guards intended for skateboarding that fit securely and cover the wrist. | CPSC calls wrist guards especially important for reducing fracture risk; it does not quantify the reduction or promise prevention of all wrist injuries. |
| Knee pads | Check that they are intended for skateboarding and stay in place while moving. | CPSC recommends knee pads; the cited guidance provides no quantified effectiveness or model comparison. |
| Elbow pads | Check that they are intended for skateboarding and stay in place while moving. | CPSC recommends elbow pads; the cited guidance provides no quantified effectiveness or model comparison. |
The practical comparison is coverage, secure fit, and skateboard suitability—not a proven ranking of protection. The guidance does not establish that a particular model or pad type is best.

Choose a helmet labeled for skateboarding
Do not assume a bicycle-helmet label alone means a helmet is certified for skateboarding. CPSC’s bicycle-helmet business guidance explains that helmets marketed exclusively for skateboarding are not covered by the federal bicycle-helmet requirements described there. CDC advises checking that a multi-use helmet carries an ASTM label certifying it for skateboarding. Check the specific helmet’s label and activity coverage rather than assuming every multi-sport helmet has the same certification.

Fit it snugly and level
- Position the helmet level on your head, not tilted back.
- Adjust it so it fits snugly.
- Fasten the chin strap.
These are CPSC’s fit recommendations for skateboard helmets. A helmet that is the wrong size or worn out of position does not meet that fit guidance.
Use and replace a helmet carefully
CDC HEADS UP states, “There is no concussion-proof helmet.” A helmet can reduce risk, but it cannot guarantee that a crash will not cause a concussion.

- Suitable for kids 8-14 years old

CDC advises replacing a skateboard helmet if it has been in a serious crash or is damaged. Do not use one that is cracked or broken, or is missing padding or parts. CDC notes that skateboard helmets can withstand more than one very minor hit; that limited advice should not be applied to serious impacts. The cited guidance does not set a universal replacement interval for an undamaged helmet.

For wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads, confirm the item is designed for skateboarding, covers the intended area, and stays securely in place. CPSC particularly highlights wrist guards in connection with reducing fracture risk. Its guidance recommends knee and elbow pads as well, but does not provide numerical effectiveness estimates, product-level comparisons, or evidence for ranking one category above another.
