SK hynix’s eSSD virtualization technology extends virtualization into the enterprise SSD itself. The company says its PE9010 and PEB110 drives can present PCIe functions and handle address-translation work so multiple virtual machines (VMs) can share storage with more predictable performance, isolation and quality of service. The cited company accounts describe intended benefits, not independently measured benchmarks.

What is eSSD virtualization?

Traditional virtualization divides compute, memory and other host resources among VMs. Storage I/O can become another bottleneck when many tenants generate reads and writes through the same server. SK hynix describes eSSD virtualization as moving part of that coordination into an enterprise SSD, allowing one drive to serve multiple VMs and multi-tenant workloads while preserving service-level characteristics.

This is storage I/O virtualization for cloud and data-center platforms—not virtualization software for a consumer PC. The goal is to make the SSD an active participant in managing shared I/O rather than leaving every request-management task to the host and hypervisor.

How the technology is intended to work

PCIe multi-physical-function support

SK hynix identifies PCIe multi-physical-function support as a way to expose separate device functions to virtualized workloads. In the company’s account, this can reduce the amount of I/O coordination performed by the hypervisor. The cited articles do not provide an architecture diagram, supported hypervisor list or a measured reduction in CPU time.

Address Translation Service (ATS)

Address Translation Service lets compatible PCIe devices use translated address information supplied by the platform’s I/O memory-management path. SK hynix says ATS helps offload address-translation work, potentially reducing translation overhead as requests move between VMs and the SSD. Actual support depends on the host processor, PCIe root complex, operating system, hypervisor and firmware configuration.

Throttling, QoS and isolation

The company also points to improved throttling behavior and device-side handling intended to keep mixed-tenant workloads more predictable. In deployment, operators still need to define queue, bandwidth, latency and failure-isolation policies at the platform level. Neither cited account publishes latency-distribution data, workload mixes, isolation tests or a comparison with another vendor’s implementation.

Why cloud and AI systems need storage-side virtualization

Cloud platforms consolidate many customers and services on shared hardware. AI systems add sustained, highly parallel data movement that can expose storage scheduling and host-CPU overhead. If each VM’s I/O requires extensive hypervisor intervention or repeated address translation, the host can spend more resources coordinating storage instead of running applications.

SK hynix’s approach is intended to provide a more direct path between virtualized workloads and the SSD. The company links that design to steadier service quality under shared loads, but the available sources do not establish a numerical performance uplift or a specific tenant count.

SK hynix’s development approach

SK hynix says the project combined two existing strengths:

  • PM883 MZ7LH3T8HMLT 3.84TB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5-Inch Enterprise SSD
  • Enterprise-SSD teams contributed performance stabilization and optimization experience.
  • Client-SSD teams contributed power-efficiency and throttling expertise.

Design, verification and validation, and firmware engineers formed a task force to build an I/O-virtualization test environment that the company says it initially lacked. Firmware was adapted to customer requirements, and SK hynix describes expanded customer communication with Solidigm. Gijo Jeong, a technical leader in SSD design at SK hynix, summarized the engineering approach: “The key to success was our team’s flexibility and collaboration.” This is a company engineering perspective, not independent validation.

Which SK hynix drives use the technology?

PEB110 Commercialized flagship enterprise SSD equipped with I/O virtualization technology Detailed specifications, pricing, regional availability, compatibility matrix and independent benchmark results

SK hynix says the drives were adopted by global technology companies operating cloud platforms, but it does not name those customers. Availability and compatibility should therefore be confirmed directly with SK hynix, the system vendor and the hypervisor supplier before procurement.

Potential operational benefits—and their limits

Less host and hypervisor work

Multi-physical-function support and ATS are intended to reduce software and address-translation overhead. No cited source quantifies CPU savings or shows how results vary by processor, queue depth or VM density.

More consistent service for tenants

Device-side scheduling and throttling may help maintain QoS when workloads compete for the same SSD. The evidence supplied is qualitative; it does not report tail latency, IOPS, bandwidth or fairness measurements.

Power and cooling considerations

SK hynix says it carried low-power characteristics from client-SSD development into the enterprise design and that device-side offload may help customers maintain service quality without expanding systems. The company also says lower power could reduce cooling costs. These are vendor-stated possibilities, not measured savings or a guaranteed reduction in rack power.

What to evaluate before deployment

Use the following checks when comparing an eSSD virtualization design with alternatives:

  • PCIe function model: Confirm multi-physical-function behavior, limits and management interfaces.
  • ATS path: Verify support across the CPU, IOMMU, PCIe root complex, operating system and hypervisor.
  • QoS evidence: Request mixed-tenant tests showing average and tail latency, bandwidth, IOPS and throttling behavior.
  • Isolation and security: Check namespace or function separation, reset behavior, error containment, firmware controls and tenant-data protections.
  • Power and thermals: Validate active, idle and throttled power in the target chassis, then model cooling impact.
  • Firmware flexibility: Establish update, telemetry and customer-policy support, including rollback procedures.
  • Platform compatibility: Test the exact server, BIOS, kernel, driver, hypervisor and orchestration stack that will run in production.

What the published material does not prove

The SK hynix Newsroom account from November 27, 2024 and the EE Times article from February 4, 2025 do not publish independent benchmarks, quantified energy savings, named cloud customers, prices or a competing-product comparison. They also do not establish current availability in every market. Treat claims about performance, security, cooling and avoiding system expansion as intended outcomes that require validation in the buyer’s environment.

The Bottom Line

SK hynix’s PE9010 and PEB110 bring PCIe multi-physical-function support, ATS and related firmware work into the enterprise SSD to make shared VM storage easier to manage. The concept is promising for cloud and AI platforms, but buyers need platform-specific QoS, compatibility, security and power testing because published evidence remains vendor-reported and qualitative.
