“Free” can mean software you install and operate yourself, or a hosted service with a no-cost tier and strict quotas. Those are different trade-offs: self-managed databases avoid a cloud-plan storage cap but require you to handle setup, security, backups, uptime, and maintenance; managed tiers reduce some of that work but can impose small limits or omit recovery features. The six choices below cover both models, so the right one depends on your data and how much operational responsibility you can take on.

How to compare free databases

Start with the data model and deployment model, then check the limits and operational terms that affect your use case. SQL databases organize information in related tables; MongoDB uses documents, while Redis is a specialized in-memory data store. PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and SQLite are software choices you can operate yourself. MongoDB Atlas and Redis Cloud are managed services with free tiers.

  • Limits: Find the current storage, usage, connection, and account quotas for a hosted tier. A quota is not a performance benchmark.
  • Backups and recovery: Check whether backups are automatic, how long they are retained, and how restoration works. If a tier lacks managed backups, decide how you will create and test your own.
  • Security and availability: Review authentication, encryption, permission controls, uptime terms, and support expectations. A no-cost tier may not offer the controls or service commitments a production system needs.
  • Growth and portability: Consider the upgrade path, export options, migration effort, and the work of operating the database. Free does not mean unlimited, as MongoDB’s guide to [creating a database for free](https://www.mongodb.com/resources/products/fundamentals/how-to-create-a-database) cautions.

Six free database options

1. PostgreSQL: relational database software

PostgreSQL is a self-managed relational database option for structured information. MongoDB’s guide positions it as a fit for projects that need custom logic, data integrity, complex data types, and room to scale. Those are vendor-authored comparisons, not an independent performance assessment; check the [PostgreSQL documentation](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/) for the specific capabilities and version you plan to use. Its software being free does not remove the cost of hosting and operating it.

2. MySQL: relational database software

MySQL is another self-managed relational choice, particularly suited to predictable, tabular records such as customer information or inventory. MongoDB’s guide describes it as a straightforward option for structured data. Verify the edition, license, and feature details against the relevant [MySQL documentation](https://dev.mysql.com/doc/) for your deployment rather than assuming every offering has identical terms.

3. MariaDB: relational database software

MariaDB Community Server is a self-managed relational database. MariaDB describes it as supporting pluggable storage engines and capabilities for transactions and analytics, and highlights temporal tables, federation, and columnar storage. These are the vendor’s product descriptions, not neutral comparative test results; consult [MariaDB’s Community Server information](https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb-community-server/) to assess whether a particular feature fits your workload. As with other self-managed choices, plan for infrastructure and administration.

4. SQLite: a distinct, embedded database model

SQLite belongs in the comparison, but it is not the same deployment model as a network-hosted managed database. The official SQLite page available for this comparison did not establish detailed feature or quota claims, so confirm its current documentation for your intended application before relying on a specific capability. In particular, evaluate whether an embedded database fits how your application stores and accesses data rather than treating it as a drop-in hosted service.

5. MongoDB Atlas: managed document database

MongoDB Atlas is a managed cloud service built around MongoDB’s document model. MongoDB’s guide presents that model as useful when data changes frequently or does not fit neatly into tables. The vendor currently describes its free Atlas cluster as providing 512 MB of storage, authentication, and encryption; check the [Atlas free-tier details](https://www.mongodb.com/pricing) before signing up, because plan quotas and terms can change.

MongoDB says Atlas M0 does not include automatic backups. If you use that tier, arrange and test a separate backup process, or choose a tier whose recovery terms meet your needs. Do not assume managed hosting means managed recovery.

6. Redis Cloud: managed, specialized data store

Redis is a specialized option, not a general replacement for every relational database. Redis Cloud’s official documentation describes its free database as limited to 30 MB, with one free database per account and a choice of AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure region. Redis describes the tier as suited to learning and prototypes; its small stated capacity is a reason not to present it as an unlimited production database. Check the [Redis Cloud free database documentation](https://redis.io/docs/latest/operate/rc/databases/create-database/) for current terms and availability.

Which option fits your situation?

  • You want structured records and will manage the server: Compare PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB against your application’s required features and your team’s operating skills.
  • Your application needs an embedded database model: Investigate SQLite’s current documentation and confirm that its deployment model suits the application.
  • Your records are document-shaped or change frequently: Consider MongoDB Atlas, but include the free cluster’s storage quota and backup gap in your plan.
  • You need a small Redis environment to learn or prototype: Redis Cloud’s free tier may work within its documented capacity and account limits; evaluate a paid or self-managed option if your needs exceed them.

There is no defensible universal “best free database” based on these options alone. Hosted limits, recovery terms, support, and availability differ, and the stated 512 MB for Atlas and 30 MB for Redis Cloud are vendor plan limits—not comparable measures of performance. Verify current official terms for your region and use case before putting important production data on a free tier.
