Start with https://example.com/robots.txt. Read every case-insensitive Sitemap: line, open each URL it names, and then test common paths such as /sitemap.xml if no directive is present. A reliable check confirms that the response is reachable, is well-formed XML, contains absolute in-scope URLs, and uses truthful metadata. If the site has more than 50,000 URLs or 50 MB, it should split them into child sitemaps and publish a sitemap index.
What an XML sitemap does
Google describes a sitemap as a file that tells search engines which pages and files you consider important and provides information about them. It can also carry a page’s last modification time and alternate-language versions. Search engines can discover URLs without a sitemap, but a sitemap gives crawlers a machine-readable inventory and can make crawling more efficient. See Google’s sitemap overview.
An XML sitemap is not the same as an HTML page containing links. An HTML link directory can help visitors, but it does not replace the XML format that crawler tools expect.
How to find a sitemap from robots.txt
- Use the domain’s actual protocol and host. Try
https://example.com/robots.txt, and also the canonical HTTP/HTTPS and www/non-www variant if the site redirects between them. - Search the complete file for
Sitemap:, ignoring capitalization. The value should be a complete URL, for exampleSitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml. A site may publish several lines or point to a sitemap index. Bing documents this discovery method in its sitemap guidance. - Copy each declared URL exactly and open it directly. Do not assume the first line is the only sitemap.
- If an index opens, follow every
<sitemap>entry and check each child file, not just the index.
The Sitemap: directive is a crawler-discovery mechanism; it is not a submission confirmation and does not prove that every listed URL is valid.

Common sitemap URLs to try when robots.txt is silent
A site can choose any valid filename, so these are practical guesses rather than a standard list:
https://example.com/sitemap.xmlhttps://example.com/sitemap_index.xmlhttps://example.com/sitemap-index.xml
For a content-management system, inspect its SEO or sitemap settings. Google notes that WordPress, Wix and Blogger commonly generate a sitemap automatically; the exact path depends on the installation and configuration. Start with the platform’s documentation or administration panel rather than editing a generated file manually.
How to recognize a sitemap index
There are two normal XML document types:

Open and validate every child sitemap. |
An index is a directory, not a replacement for its children. A child can fail independently through a 404, permission rule, malformed XML or out-of-scope URLs.
How to check whether an XML sitemap is valid
1. Confirm reachability and the response
Open the exact URL outside a search console. It should return a successful HTTP response and the sitemap body, not an HTML error page, login screen or application shell. Resolve redirects and check DNS, TLS and CDN behavior. A redirect to the canonical sitemap URL can be acceptable, but a loop or a redirect to an unrelated page is a failure.
2. Confirm well-formed XML
The document must parse as XML. A URL set normally has <urlset>, <url> and <loc>; an index has <sitemapindex>, <sitemap> and <loc>. Unescaped ampersands, truncated responses, invalid characters and mismatched tags commonly break parsing. Browser formatting is not validation: use an XML-aware validator or crawler that reports the line and column of a parse error.

3. Check every location
Each <loc> should be an absolute URL and should use the intended protocol, host and site scope. Remove obvious 404, redirect-chain, login, parameter-spam and server-error URLs. For an index, apply the same checks to every child file and then to every URL in those files.
4. Treat last-modified dates as factual metadata
Use <lastmod> only when it reflects a real source-system modification date. Rewriting every date on every build makes the metadata less useful and can cause unnecessary recrawling. A sitemap does not make a URL canonical, indexable or eligible for ranking; those decisions still depend on the page response, robots rules and search-engine systems.
5. Enforce size limits
Current Search.gov guidance sets a limit of 50 MB or 50,000 URLs, whichever comes first. Split larger collections by content type, language or section and publish a sitemap index that lists the child files. Keep each child within the same limit.

Sitemap formats and when to use them

Bing accepts XML, RSS 2.0, Atom 0.3/1.0 and plain-text URL lists. XML is generally the most versatile choice when you control the generator.
How to submit a sitemap
Google Search Console
For a site you own, open the matching property in Search Console, select Sitemaps, enter the sitemap URL (or path where the interface requests it), and submit. Google requires owner permissions for this route. The report provides processing status and error details; a submitted file is not automatically proof that all URLs were accepted. Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools accepts submitted sitemaps and shows processing status, errors and discovered URL counts. Use the property that matches the sitemap’s host and protocol. Details are in Bing’s sitemap help.
Robots.txt discovery
If you cannot use a console account, publish one or more full Sitemap: URLs in robots.txt. This lets crawlers discover the files, but it does not provide the diagnostic reporting that a webmaster console does.

Inspect headers and redirects with cURL
curl -I -L https://example.com/sitemap.xmlLook for the final HTTP status, a stable final URL and a content type appropriate for XML. Download the body for a parser rather than relying on a browser’s visual display:
curl -L https://example.com/sitemap.xml -o sitemap.xml
xmllint --noout sitemap.xmlxmllint reports malformed XML with a line number. For an index, repeat the download and parse step for every child <loc>.

404, wrong filename or redirect loop
Recheck the host, protocol, spelling and deployment route. Copy the URL from robots.txt instead of reconstructing it. Follow redirects with curl -I -L and correct loops at the server or CDN.
HTML returned instead of XML
Inspect rewrites, authentication, content negotiation and CDN rules. A custom 404 page often returns status 200 with HTML, which still fails XML parsing. Ensure the public route serves the generated file and an XML content type.
Search Console says “Couldn’t fetch”
Open the exact URL outside the console, verify DNS, TLS and HTTP status, and check whether robots.txt, a firewall, authentication or access-control rule blocks Google. Google notes that inaccessible sitemap files or listed content can cause fetching failures; use the report’s property and URL exactly.
URLs outside the property
Submit under the matching Search Console property and keep locations within the appropriate host and protocol scope. A sitemap cannot safely mix unrelated domains.

Stale dates or an oversized file
Generate <lastmod> from real content timestamps, then split files at the 50 MB/50,000-URL threshold and update the index. Validate every child after deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a website have more than one sitemap?
Yes. robots.txt can list multiple sitemap URLs, and a sitemap index can organize multiple child files.
Does a sitemap guarantee indexing?
No. It helps discovery and supplies metadata, but crawling and indexing still depend on page accessibility, directives and search-engine decisions.
Is sitemap.xml always the correct filename?
No. The filename is arbitrary; robots.txt and the site’s CMS configuration are more reliable than guessing a path.
