The SingleFileZ project says it has been completely merged into SingleFile, where you can choose the self-extracting ZIP-style format in the options. For straightforward offline viewing, save ordinary HTML; choose the self-extracting format when compression and extractable page resources matter, provided your browser can open it.
SingleFileZ is no longer a separate choice for most users
According to the SingleFileZ project repository, SingleFileZ has been merged into SingleFile. The practical decision is now usually which output format to use in SingleFile, rather than which of two separate extensions to install.
SingleFileZ remains a useful name in older guides and when discussing the format’s history. The SingleFileZ Firefox listing reports version 1.4.45, updated February 15, 2024; for a new setup, prioritize SingleFile’s current documentation and settings.
Choose a format based on how you will use the saved page
| Format | What you get | Best fit | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| SingleFile ordinary HTML | One self-contained HTML file, with binary resources embedded in the HTML. | Simple offline viewing and broad compatibility. | The format comparison does not list ordinary HTML as compressed. |
| SingleFile self-extracting ZIP format | One HTML/ZIP hybrid file; its page resources can be extracted by unzipping. | When a compressed bundle or access to its embedded resources is useful. | Opening the saved page requires JavaScript, and browser handling of local files can impose restrictions. |
Both formats can minify HTML and styles and remove unused HTML and styles, according to SingleFile’s project comparison. Neither format promises a perfect copy of every live site: content may depend on browser restrictions, network resources, or page-specific behavior.

How to save a page with SingleFile
- Install or open SingleFile in your browser. The SingleFile Chrome Web Store listing reports version 1.28.0, updated October 2, 2026; available versions and interfaces can differ by browser.
- Open the extension’s options and select the desired file format. Choose ordinary HTML for simple viewing, or the self-extracting ZIP-style option for a compressed, extractable bundle.
- Open the page you want to keep and use SingleFile’s save action. Its Chrome listing documents saving the current tab, selected content, a selected frame, selected links, and multiple tabs.
- Open the resulting file in the intended browser before depending on it. For a self-extracting file, test the local-file behavior on the target browser and device.
The Chrome listing also documents annotations, autosaving tabs after loading, a configurable shortcut, and optional upload destinations including Google Drive, Dropbox, GitHub, and WebDAV. These are listed features, not a guarantee that every option works identically across browsers.
Opening and extracting self-extracting files
The SingleFileZ FAQ describes opening saved files from the filesystem in Firefox and Safari under specified conditions. It says Chrome may require the extension or a command-line switch to open local self-extracting files. Since browser policies and extension behavior can change, check the current extension settings and browser behavior before building a workflow around these files.

The self-extracting format takes longer to save and open, according to the SingleFileZ FAQ. No comparative file-size or speed benchmark is established here, so choose it for its format properties—not on an assumed percentage of space saved or time taken.
What will and will not be preserved
Interactive behavior may change
SingleFile’s FAQ says scripts are removed by default because they can change rendering and may not work offline. Interactive elements such as maps, carousels, and collapsible sections may therefore behave differently or stop working. A saved page is useful for reading and reference, but should not be treated as a fully functioning offline version of the original site.

Some resources may be unavailable
Some sites require a Referer header to retrieve images, and browsers restrict extension access to certain protected domains, according to the SingleFile FAQ. Missing images or other resources can therefore be site- or browser-specific rather than evidence that one format is universally better.
Saving locally is different from uploading
Both project FAQs describe local processing by default and say page data is not uploaded to third-party servers by default. SingleFile may retrieve page resources while saving; separately, if you configure a destination such as cloud storage, the saved file is sent to the service you selected. Local capture and user-configured remote storage are distinct steps.

For formal preservation, use an archival workflow
SingleFile’s FAQ explicitly says it is not a professional web-archiving tool, particularly for academic archiving. If you need a preservation workflow suitable for formal research or citation, use a WARC-based archival tool rather than relying on a browser page saver alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what to check
- The self-extracting file will not open in Chrome: check the current SingleFile settings and Chrome’s local-file restrictions. The SingleFileZ FAQ notes that the extension or a command-line switch may be required.
- The saved page looks different or controls do not work: scripts are removed by default, and interactive page features may rely on scripts or live network resources. Use the saved file as a reading copy, not a guaranteed interactive replica.
- Images are missing: the site may require a Referer header, or the browser may block extension access to a protected domain. Try another permitted capture context or retain the original page URL as a reference.
- The archive takes longer to save or open: the SingleFileZ FAQ notes slower processing for the self-extracting format. If that trade-off is inconvenient and you do not need extractable resources, use ordinary HTML.
- You expect a permanent archival record: a single-file browser capture is not a preservation guarantee. Choose a WARC-based workflow for formal web archiving.
