If Hindi looks right on the original webpage but wrong in the copy saved by SingleFile, check how SingleFile captured the page’s fonts and styles before changing your system fonts. If Hindi is already wrong on the original page, the problem is likely in the page’s text, font, or rendering rather than in the saved copy. Compare the two versions first: encoding, Devanagari shaping, and font coverage are separate possible causes, and no single setting fixes them all.
First find out where the problem starts
Open the original page and the saved HTML in the same browser, then compare the same Hindi text. Note whether the text is missing, appears as empty boxes, has incorrect characters, or has letters and vowel marks joined or positioned incorrectly. These clues help narrow the cause, but they do not prove it on their own.
- Hindi is wrong on the original page too: SingleFile did not create the original defect. The page’s text, CSS web font, or rendering may be at fault. The page author controls those elements.
- The original is correct, but the saved copy is wrong: Check SingleFile’s font-related capture options and whether the saved page retains the styles and fonts it needs.
- The saved copy changes between browsers or systems: The difference may involve browser shaping support or available fonts, not just the file’s encoding.
The Unicode Consortium groups possible display problems into three broad causes: incorrect text encoding or character sequences, software limitations, and font limitations. A visible-script problem is not automatically an encoding problem. Unicode’s display guidance explains these distinctions.
Check the characters, shaping, and font coverage
Malformed or unexpected characters
A font cannot repair text that uses the wrong Unicode characters. Unicode’s guidance gives a Devanagari example: the vowel letter आ (U+0906) is not equivalent to अ (U+0905) followed by the vowel sign ा (U+093E). If the source contains an unexpected sequence, ask the page author to correct the text rather than trying different fonts.

Empty boxes or missing glyphs
Boxes or blank-looking characters can point to a font that lacks the needed glyphs, or to a font that did not load. If the original page uses a remote CSS web font, test whether it loads in the original and saved copies. Unicode recommends using CSS web fonts to control page typography; the content author may need to fix the font or its fallback.
Incorrect joining or mark placement
If the characters are recognizable but Devanagari letters join or vowel marks appear incorrectly, shaping support or the text sequence may be involved. A different font may help only if the problem is font-specific; changing fonts blindly will not fix malformed text or a browser’s shaping limitation.
Hindi uses the Devanagari script, as documented in The Unicode Standard, Version 16.0 (2024). That fact alone does not identify which font a particular page requires.

Test SingleFile’s font options
When the source displays correctly and only the saved page is affected, test SingleFile’s font-removal options. Its help describes options for removing unused font rules and alternative fonts. Removing a font or font rule can change how text renders if the saved page still depends on it.

- Open SingleFile’s options or settings in your browser.
- Find the font-related options described in the SingleFile help page.
- Change one relevant font-removal option at a time, then save the same page again.
- Compare the new saved HTML with both the original and the previous capture. If a change makes Hindi render correctly, keep track of which setting changed the result.
SingleFile’s Firefox release history records font-selection fixes, including an issue where saved text could appear in another font after fonts were incorrectly removed. That makes capture behavior worth checking, but it does not mean every Hindi display problem has the same cause. See the SingleFile version history.
One special case in the help page concerns the self-extracting ZIP (universal) format: its inserted searchable text is UTF-8 while the page is declared ISO-8859-1. Do not apply that format-specific note to ordinary SingleFile HTML captures.

Isolate browser settings and extension conflicts
If the font-option test does not help, follow SingleFile’s general troubleshooting sequence:
- Save the page in an incognito or private window.
- Reset SingleFile’s options, then capture the page again.
- Restart the browser and repeat the capture.
- Disable other extensions to check whether one conflicts with the capture.
These steps come from the SingleFile project README. Change one condition at a time where practical so you can tell which, if any, affects the output.

- The source page URL and whether Hindi displays correctly there.
- Your browser name and version, operating system, and SingleFile version.
- Whether the saved file looks wrong in the same browser and in another browser or system.
- The visible symptom: missing glyphs, unexpected characters, or incorrect joining or mark placement.
- Which SingleFile font options you changed and whether incognito mode, resetting options, restarting, or disabling other extensions changed the result.
Do not assume that installing another font will help. A font may address a genuine glyph-coverage problem, but it cannot correct a malformed Unicode sequence, and the evidence does not establish one required font for all Hindi pages.
