It is useful for keeping many pages for offline reference, but “complete” is the extension’s stated aim—not a guarantee that every interactive or dynamic element will be preserved. Canvas images, video snapshots and some protected pages are documented exceptions.
What SingleFile saves
SingleFile’s Chrome Web Store listing describes the result as a complete page in a single HTML file, with associated resources such as CSS, images, fonts and frames embedded or included. The project FAQ notes that it can fetch resources present in the page even if they are not displayed or already cached. That can make the saved file much larger than the visible text alone would suggest. Chrome Web Store listing · SingleFile project · SingleFile FAQ
In practice, the saved file is intended to preserve a page for later viewing, not to reproduce every behavior of the live site. Inspect important captures to confirm that the content you need is actually present.
How to save a page in Chrome
- Open the webpage and wait for it to finish loading. This matters especially on pages that populate content after the initial load.
- Click the SingleFile toolbar button to save the current page. If processing is underway, clicking the button again cancels the operation.
- Open the resulting HTML file and check that the text and resources you need are present.
SingleFile also lists context-menu actions for saving selected content, a selected frame, selected links, or batches of selected, unpinned or all tabs. Other listed features include highlighting text, adding notes, removing content, autosaving after pages load and configuring a keyboard shortcut. The exact options available can depend on the extension’s current settings and version; see the Chrome Web Store listing and project documentation.

What may be missing from a saved page
Canvas and video content
SingleFile’s known-issues documentation says browser security can prevent it from saving the image representation of some canvas elements or snapshots of video elements. This does not mean ordinary images always fail, or that every page containing video is unusable; it means those particular rendered representations may not be captured reliably. SingleFile known issues
Protected browser pages
The project documents that pages hosted on chrome.google.com, addons.mozilla.org and some other Mozilla domains cannot be saved for security reasons. This is a restriction on those protected pages, not a general inability to save regular websites. SingleFile project

Dynamic, lazy-loaded or interactive content
The Chrome listing tells users to wait until a page has fully loaded before saving. That is a sensible precaution for content that appears after the initial render, but it does not establish that every lazy-loaded, authenticated, scripted or highly interactive page will be captured exactly as expected. Test the page types that matter to you and inspect the saved copy.
Opening saved files and file-URL permission
Chrome users may need to enable Allow access to file URLs on the extension’s page if they want SingleFile’s infobar to appear while viewing a saved page, or if they want to save a page already stored on the filesystem. This is a Chrome permission setting; it is not a requirement for saving ordinary pages from the web. See the SingleFile FAQ.

Is SingleFile a good fit?
- Good fit: You want portable, individual HTML files for offline reading, and you are willing to check important captures.
- Useful extras: You want annotations, selected-content capture or multi-tab saving from the extension’s available context-menu actions.
- Less certain fit: The pages you depend on rely on protected browser pages, canvas-rendered output, video snapshots or dynamic behavior that must remain intact.
- Choose based on workflow: Decide whether you need a single portable HTML file or a browser-managed offline service; those are different needs. No controlled head-to-head evidence establishes a universal winner over Chrome’s built-in save options or other archivers.

For a screenshot rather than a saved HTML page, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. It accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo, or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Troubleshooting missing content
- The page looks incomplete: Wait for loading to finish before capture, save it again, and compare the file with the live page. For dynamic pages, test whether the missing content appears only after scrolling, signing in or interacting.
- A canvas graphic or video frame is absent: These are documented edge cases. SingleFile may be unable to save their image representation or snapshot; do not assume that repeated attempts will preserve it.
- The infobar does not appear on a saved file: Check whether Chrome’s extension settings have Allow access to file URLs enabled, as described in the FAQ.
- A browser store or Mozilla page will not save: The project identifies certain such pages as restricted for security reasons. This is different from a failure on a normal website.
- The HTML file is unexpectedly large: The FAQ says resources may be fetched even when not displayed or already cached, so file size need not correspond to the visible text alone.

Can I save a page that is already on my computer?
The project FAQ says Chrome may require the extension’s “Allow access to file URLs” permission to save filesystem pages.

No. Its stated goal is a complete single-file page, but documented canvas and video limitations—and site-specific dynamic behavior—mean important captures should be checked.
