Neither one-line nor multi-line Python is always better. Keep an expression on one line when it is short, clear, and within your project’s style. Split it when length or nesting makes the structure harder to scan. Use the project’s formatter and conventions first; if none exist, PEP 8 is a sound starting point.
Use readability—not line count—as the deciding rule
A line break is useful when it helps a reader distinguish arguments, collection items, conditions, or operators. It is counterproductive when it fragments a simple logical unit into many tiny lines. Evaluate each layout by how quickly its structure is visible, whether it fits typical editor and code-review views, and whether the wrapping adds clarity rather than visual noise.

What PEP 8 actually recommends
PEP 8 recommends a maximum code-line length of 79 characters. It recommends 72 characters for comments and docstrings. A team may agree to extend the code limit up to 99 characters. These are style-guide defaults, not Python syntax requirements.
PEP 8 also says project-specific guidance takes precedence and that a guideline may be set aside when following it would reduce readability. Consistency within a module or function is especially important. The line limit exists partly to keep editor windows manageable and to make side-by-side review easier, while recognizing that automatic wrapping can disrupt code structure.

Prefer implicit continuation for wrapped code
When a statement must span lines, put the expression inside parentheses, brackets, or braces. Python then provides implicit continuation without a backslash.

)PEP 8 prefers this implicit-continuation style over backslashes. It keeps delimiters visible and lets each component occupy its own line. A trailing comma is often useful in multi-line calls and collections because it makes later edits smaller, although the decision should follow the project formatter and style.

When one line is the better choice
- A short function call has only a few straightforward arguments.
- A simple assignment or expression fits the project’s line limit.
- Breaking the statement would separate parts that a reader naturally understands together.
- The surrounding code uses the same compact style, so a single line preserves local consistency.
user = get_user(user_id)Do not add line breaks merely to reach a particular visual pattern. A clear, compact statement can be easier to understand than a vertically expanded equivalent.
When multiple lines improve the code
- A call has many arguments or arguments with substantial expressions.
- A list, dictionary, set, or tuple contains several meaningful items.
- A boolean condition contains multiple clauses that deserve separate inspection.
- Nesting makes the relationship between parts difficult to see on one line.
- The line exceeds the repository’s configured limit or becomes awkward in normal review windows.

)Vertical formatting is most valuable when each line represents a recognizable component. If every line is only a fragment of an indivisible expression, refactoring into named intermediate values may be clearer than wrapping alone.

How to choose between the two layouts
- Check the repository rules. Read its style guide, formatter configuration, and contributor documentation.
- Apply the project’s line limit. If no limit is documented, start with PEP 8’s 79-character recommendation and its allowance for a team-agreed limit up to 99.
- Identify the logical parts. Mark arguments, collection items, conditions, and operators that a reviewer may need to distinguish.
- Try implicit continuation. Use the relevant parentheses, brackets, or braces rather than a backslash.
- Inspect the result in context. Confirm that the structure is easier to scan in the editor and in a side-by-side diff.
- Keep nearby code consistent. A locally consistent pattern is generally easier to maintain than an isolated stylistic exception.
Formatters and team consistency
A formatter can remove recurring debates about where to break lines. Black documents goals of consistency, generality, readability, and smaller diffs, and describes its style as a strict subset of PEP 8. That makes it a possible team policy, not a universal requirement or proof that every formatted result will be clearer for every reader.
Use the formatter already adopted by the project. If there is no established tool, agree on one formatter and configuration before applying it broadly; otherwise, developers may produce needless formatting churn. Keep manual exceptions only when the project’s policy permits them and the exception materially improves readability.

What the available evidence says about readability
Official guidance consistently treats readability and consistency as the goals. The Python tutorial presents readable style as a benefit to everyone who maintains code, while PEP 8 emphasizes that “Readability counts” and that consistency within a module or function is especially important.
A 2024 eye-tracking preprint reported a 70% increase in eye-regression count for the studied snippet when participants did not follow its line-break-after-operator guideline. That result applies to the reported snippet and study condition; it does not establish that every multi-line layout is easier to read or that one universal break position is best.

Common mistakes
Treating 79 characters as a hard language rule
Python will not reject a longer line. The number is a PEP 8 recommendation, and a project can choose another limit when documented.
Wrapping every expression mechanically
Uniformly short lines can add indentation and visual noise. Break at meaningful boundaries instead.
Using backslashes by default
Backslashes are less robust and less preferred than implicit continuation inside delimiters. Restructure the expression with parentheses, brackets, or braces when possible.
Ignoring local conventions
An individual preference should not override a repository’s formatter or style guide. Consistency reduces review friction and makes neighboring code easier to compare.
A practical rule of thumb
Leave a short, simple call or expression on one line. Wrap a long call, collection, condition, or nested expression when separate lines make its components easier to identify. Use implicit continuation, follow the project formatter, and treat PEP 8’s limits as guidance in service of readable, consistent code.
