To play single-deck blackjack, try to beat the dealer’s hand without going over 21, then use a basic-strategy chart that matches the table’s rules. The phrase “single deck” only tells you how many cards are used; it does not guarantee a better payout or more favorable odds. Before betting, check the blackjack payout, soft-17 rule, doubling and splitting options, surrender availability, and shuffle frequency.
What single-deck blackjack means
Blackjack is played against the dealer, not against the other players. You want your hand to finish closer to 21 than the dealer’s without exceeding 21. A tie is a push, so the hand ends without a win or loss.
In the Danske Spil example, single-deck blackjack uses one standard 52-card deck, but the deck is shuffled after every hand. That is one operator’s version, not a universal set of single-deck rules. Games can differ in payouts, dealer behavior, and which player options are allowed. Danske Spil’s rules describe that example.

How card values and a hand work
- Number cards count at face value; a 10, jack, queen, or king counts as 10.
- An ace counts as either 1 or 11, whichever helps the hand without going over 21.
- A soft total contains an ace still counted as 11 without busting. A hard total has no ace that can count as 11 without busting.
- A natural blackjack is an ace and a 10-value card in the first two cards.
After players receive their initial cards, they choose from the actions the table permits, such as taking another card, standing, doubling, or splitting a pair. The dealer then completes the hand under the table’s rules. Exact dealing procedures and available actions can vary, so read the game’s rules before wagering.

How to use a single-deck basic-strategy chart
Basic strategy is a lookup: find your hand and the dealer’s visible up-card, then follow the action shown for that combination. It is not a prediction of the next card or a guarantee of winning. A chart built for another number of decks or different table rules may recommend different actions.
- Identify the rules first. In particular, find out whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17, and note the doubling, splitting, and surrender rules.
- Choose the matching chart. Wizard of Odds’ single-deck strategy page provides separate charts for a dealer who hits soft 17 and one who stands on soft 17, as well as composition-dependent exceptions.
- Read your hand correctly. Determine whether it is a hard total, soft total, or pair; a pair may have its own chart entry rather than being played only as its combined total.
- Match the dealer’s up-card. Use the chart’s row and column for your hand and the dealer’s visible card, then take the listed action only if that action is allowed at the table.
- Check for composition exceptions. Some plays depend on the exact cards making up a total, not just the total value. Consult the chart’s exceptions when they apply.
If you use a printed strategy card, make sure it is explicitly for single-deck play and matches the table’s soft-17 rule and other relevant options.

Check these rules before placing a bet
- Natural blackjack payout: Check what a natural pays; do not assume all games pay the same. In the cited New York regulation, the general provision specifies 3:2, while provisions for one- or two-deck games allow a 6:5 minimum or another commission-approved amount. This is a New York example, not a rule for every location. Read the cited New York regulation.
- Soft 17: Confirm whether the dealer hits or stands on a soft 17, then use a chart for that rule.
- Doubling: Check which starting totals may be doubled and whether doubling after a split is allowed.
- Splitting: Find out which pairs may be split and whether resplitting is permitted.
- Surrender: Check whether the option exists; it is not available at every table.
- Shuffle frequency: Find out when the deck is shuffled. If it is shuffled after every hand, there is no continuing undealt shoe between rounds.
For example, Danske Spil’s documented game has a one-deck shuffle after each hand, the dealer hits soft 17, players may split once and double on 9, 10, or 11, and surrender is unavailable. Its natural blackjack pays 1.5 to 1 unless the house ties. Those details describe that particular game only; use the rules displayed for the game you choose.
Is single-deck blackjack better than games with more decks?
Not necessarily. A smaller deck count by itself does not settle whether a game is favorable: payouts and play rules matter too. PokerStars Casino publishes example house-edge figures of 0.17% for one deck, 0.46% for two, 0.60% for four, 0.64% for six, and 0.66% for eight, under its comparison assumptions. It also says changing a blackjack payout from 3:2 to 6:5 can add 1.36% or more to the house edge in its comparison. These are publisher examples, not universal figures for every game. A one-deck game shuffled after each hand also does not leave a continuing shoe to track across rounds. Do not treat the deck count alone as evidence of a special advantage.
