A man in Singapore faces two criminal charges after allegedly creating and sharing an AI-generated image of a crocodile at Pandan Reservoir. The false image prompted public-safety precautions, including suspended water activities and search operations. He has not been convicted or sentenced: the three-year maximum cited in the headline applies to one charge, while a separate obstruction charge carries a different maximum.
What happened at Pandan Reservoir
On 20 August 2026, Singapore’s national water agency, PUB, received a report of a crocodile sighting at Pandan Reservoir. Police said preliminary investigations indicated that Ye Lin, a 30-year-old Myanmar national, had created an AI-generated image depicting a crocodile at the reservoir and sent it to a colleague. PUB later established that the image was fake and referred the matter to police. (Singapore Police Force; CNA)
The image triggered a precautionary response, not a confirmed crocodile capture. PUB and the National Parks Board conducted search-and-capture operations, members of the public were advised to exercise caution, and water activities were suspended. The Straits Times reported that the suspension lasted two days and activities resumed on 22 August. (Singapore Police Force; The Straits Times)
What charges does he face?
Police announced two charges. The maximum penalties differ, and neither is a prediction of the sentence Ye Lin will receive.

| Charge | Maximum stated by police | What the reported allegation concerns |
|---|---|---|
| Communicating a false message, under section 14D of Singapore’s Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act 1906 | Up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both | Allegedly creating and sharing the false crocodile image |
| Obstructing the course of justice, under section 204A of Singapore’s Penal Code 1871 | Up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both | Police allege he deleted the image and related application to conceal his actions; CNA reports that this charge concerns deletion of the image and Gemini AI app log history from his phone on 21 August |
The statutory maximums are separate limits attached to the charges, not a combined sentence estimate. The conduct underlying both charges remains alleged unless and until established in court. (Singapore Police Force; CNA)
What is the status of the case?
CNA reported that Ye Lin was charged on 29 September 2026. Through an interpreter, he told the court that he intended to plead guilty and would not engage a lawyer. That reported intention is not a completed guilty plea, conviction, or sentence. CNA said the case was due back in court on 10 November 2026; the outcome was unresolved in reporting available as of 3 October 2026. (CNA)

Why didn’t an AI detector settle the question?
PUB said it tried several AI-detection tools, but their results were inconclusive. The agency took precautionary measures in the interest of public safety and reported the image after it was established to be fake. The reporting does not identify a detector that conclusively authenticated or debunked the picture, or provide a performance figure for the tools. (CNA)
The incident illustrates the distinction between image verification and managing possible real-world risk. When an image could indicate a hazard, inconclusive automated checks may leave agencies weighing the potential consequences while they investigate. Here, the documented response was cautious action alongside attempts to establish authenticity—not a detector’s definitive verdict.

What the case does—and does not—show
- It concerns an alleged false communication and alleged evidence deletion. The case is not a general ban on creating AI images.
- It caused a real operational response. Authorities documented public-safety precautions, suspended water activities, and search operations; the available reports do not establish “mass panic” as a measured outcome.
- The case is still pending in the cited reporting. Charges and an expressed intention to plead guilty should not be described as a conviction or sentence.
The Singapore Police Force said: “The Police urge the public to act responsibly and refrain from circulating false information or edited images that could cause unnecessary public alarm.” The force also stated: “Apart from causing fear and inconvenience caused to members of the public, such falsehoods also result in public resources being unnecessarily deployed to deal with these incidents.” (Singapore Police Force, 28 September 2026)
