SimulIDE is a free-to-download, real-time circuit simulator for hobbyists and students who want to assemble circuits, explore basic behavior, and experiment with microcontroller code. It brings analog and digital components, supported microcontrollers, an editor and debugger, and virtual instruments into one interactive workspace. Its Community Edition repository cautions that it is not accurate enough for circuit analysis, so treat it as a learning tool—not a substitute for engineering-grade simulation or hardware verification.
What SimulIDE does
The SimulIDE project describes the software as a way to learn and experiment with analog and digital circuits and microcontrollers. Its overview names PIC, AVR and Arduino among the supported MCU/MPU families. The feature list includes a code editor and debugger, subcircuits, circuit animation, an oscilloscope, a logic analyzer, serial connection and a serial monitor. See the SimulIDE project overview for the project’s description of its capabilities.
That combination is useful for a beginner who wants to place parts, connect them, start a simulation and observe changes without first assembling a physical circuit. It also gives microcontroller learners a place to work with supported code and inspect basic behavior. The overview does not establish that every chip, compiler or feature works automatically in every setup.
How to start a circuit simulation
The project’s basic-use guide describes a portable-style workflow: download the archive for your operating system, extract it, and launch the executable from its folder. The guide says this workflow needs no additional installation. Because the reviewed guide does not establish a current version number or complete operating-system support matrix, check the current download options before choosing an archive.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open the SimulIDE basic-use guide and follow its link to the download options for your operating system.
- Extract the downloaded archive, keeping the folder structure intact.
- Run the executable inside the extracted folder.
- Drag components from the component list onto the circuit canvas.
- Click one component pin and then another to connect them with a wire.
- Use the toolbar’s power control to start or stop the simulation. Use the separate pause control when you want to pause it.
This workflow follows the project guide; specific screen details and downloads may vary as the project changes.
Writing and debugging microcontroller code
SimulIDE includes an editor for supported microcontrollers and basic debugging features. The project describes support for code work involving Arduino, GcBasic, PIC assembly, AVR assembly and other options. Its guide names breakpoints and watches for registers and global variables, and says the application can open circuit, configuration and hex files. Consult the basic-use guide for the described file and editor workflow.

Do not assume a compiler is bundled or configured for every language or chip. The project knowledge base says compiling and debugging can use compilers through configuration files, so successful use may depend on setting up the relevant configuration and tools.
What its simulation model means—and what it does not
The project knowledge base describes SimulIDE’s engine as event-driven. It notes that some reactive components, including capacitors and inductors, require periodic updates. It also describes digital and analog behavior as operating within an analog simulation approach, with configurable logic-pin impedance, output voltage and logic thresholds. These are descriptions of the project’s approach, not independent measurements of how closely every modeled part matches real hardware. See the SimulIDE knowledge base for those technical details.

The most important limitation is explicit: the SimulIDE Community Edition repository says, “This is not an accurate simulator for circuit analysis,” and characterizes its models as simple and not very accurate, with limited features. That warning is specific to the Community Edition repository; the reviewed material does not establish or quantify accuracy for every version or edition.
- Good fit: learning circuit concepts, trying simple arrangements, and observing interactive behavior while experimenting.
- Not a sound basis by itself: engineering decisions that depend on accurate device models or validated circuit-analysis results.
For work where model accuracy matters, choose a tool intended for that analysis and verify important results with hardware or other trusted methods. Do not treat a simulation that appears to run as proof that a real circuit will behave identically.

Components, customization and version differences
The component documentation describes configurable parts and ways to create custom components as subcircuits or modular components. It also specifically notes that certain component-linking and customization features are unavailable in version 1.0.0. Feature availability can therefore depend on version; check the documentation that matches the build you are using rather than assuming every documented option applies universally. See the component documentation.
Is SimulIDE right for you?
- Choose it if you want an interactive environment for learning, simple experiments, or introductory microcontroller work.
- Consider its editor, debugger and virtual instruments if you want to explore code and observe a circuit in the same application.
- Look elsewhere or verify results independently if you need dependable, engineering-grade circuit analysis.
The software is downloadable, and the project’s documented launch workflow does not require additional installation. You can begin experimenting in the simulator without buying hardware; physical components are only needed if you choose to reproduce a project outside the software.
