End-to-end XFP electrical-channel simulation combines electromagnetic models of discontinuities such as the host connector with circuit models of board traces and the transceiver package. The 2003 case study by Lawrence Williams, Bryan Boots, and Steve Rousselle shows how to reduce connector geometry, extract and cascade S-parameters, and evaluate the resulting channel with frequency-response and eye-diagram analysis. Its results describe one historical design, not universal limits for XFP channels.

What the end-to-end model includes

The case study models the electrical path from transceiver-board traces, through the host connector and host-board traces, to a ball-grid-array (BGA) package. It combines electromagnetic (EM) analysis for the connector and package with circuit-level models for the interconnect, then cascades their S-parameters for channel analysis.

The connector example is a 0.8-mm-pitch, 30-position, right-angle geometry identified as Tyco 788862C. The authors note that the geometry originated as an SFP connector design. Because a connector can be expensive to model in full three dimensions, their workflow first reduces the modeled geometry, then checks the assembled channel rather than treating the connector as an isolated component.

How the connector model was built

Reduce the geometry before full-wave analysis

The authors began with two-dimensional quasi-static cross sections to study coupling and determine how far fields extended across the connector. Their H-field analysis indicated that the field had decayed by at least 50 dB within four pins, so they modeled four of the connector’s 30 pins. This was a geometry-reduction decision for that design and setup, not a general rule for connector models.

Extract and check the connector S-parameters

They then used full-wave HFSS analysis. The reported run used eight adaptive passes, a final mesh of 87,000 finite-element-method (FEM) tetrahedra, and S-parameter convergence within 1%. These are details of the historical model, not required settings for other analyses.

In the isolated connector model, return loss was better than 20 dB through 8.5 GHz. But the authors also modeled the printed-circuit-board (PCB) pads and ground vias used to mount the connector. Those features altered its differential impedance and reduced bandwidth, illustrating why the board transition and grounding belong in the connector model.

Investigate resonance and mode conversion

With the pads and vias included, the simulation showed a resonance at 10.82 GHz associated with differential-to-common-mode conversion. In subsequent simulations, replacing the grounding vias with a solid conductor eliminated that mode conversion. The case points to grounding geometry as a design variable to investigate; it does not establish that a solid conductor is an appropriate fix for every layout.

What the BGA package model contributes

The package model has four layers: a ground-plane base, VSS and VDD voltage planes, and a top signal plane. Wire bonds connect the package to the chip die. The authors swept from 100 MHz to 50 GHz so they could calculate transient results for 24-ps rise times.

In that model’s transient analysis, peak-to-peak supply bounce at the chip was 2.2% on VDD and 2.6% on VSS. These are case results, not design limits; the authors caution that accumulated system-level effects still need to be checked. The package showed low differential insertion loss in the stated DC-to-6.5-GHz critical region, with minor return- and transmission-plot resonances near 7, 14, and 26 GHz.

How to cascade the channel and assess it

  1. Prepare the component models. Extract S-parameters for the relevant connector, board traces, and package over a frequency range appropriate to the signal and transient analysis.
  2. Include material discontinuities. Model the connector with its pads and grounding implementation, and include the trace sections on both boards and the BGA package.
  3. Cascade at consistent interfaces. Connect the transceiver-board traces, connector, host-board traces, and package models in the system simulator using compatible reference planes and port definitions.
  4. Evaluate both frequency and time-domain behavior. Inspect insertion loss, return loss, and mode conversion, then use transient, eye-diagram, or BER-style system metrics to assess the assembled channel at the relevant compliance point.

The authors’ cascaded model only just met its stated 6.5-dB insertion-loss budget at 5.5 GHz. It met the stated 10-dB return-loss criterion from 1 MHz through 7.5 GHz, yet its eye diagram failed the mask at compliance point C. The authors identified return loss from the 30-pin connector as the principal contributor in their modeled system. The example shows why passing an individual frequency-domain criterion does not by itself demonstrate that the complete channel passes an eye-mask check.

Revision 4.5 is an older published revision. The evidence here does not establish which revision governs a particular current design, so confirm the applicable specification and test context before using any compliance definition or threshold. When comparing results, use the same reference planes and applicable requirements; useful checks include connector return loss and mode conversion, pad/via geometry, package resonances and power integrity, end-to-end loss, and eye-mask outcome at the required point.
