Use Puppeteer’s experimental page.bluetooth.simulatePreconnectedPeripheral() API to add a virtual Bluetooth peripheral that Chrome treats as already connected to the system. First enable the emulated adapter, then define the peripheral’s address, name, manufacturer data, and known service UUIDs. This tests simulated device behavior; it does not automate Chrome’s chooser for a real Bluetooth device.

Set up a preconnected peripheral

The API is exposed through page.bluetooth. Puppeteer’s documented example enables the adapter with emulateAdapter('powered-on') before simulating a peripheral:

await page.bluetooth.emulateAdapter('powered-on');

await page.bluetooth.simulatePreconnectedPeripheral({
  address: '09:09:09:09:09:09',
  name: 'SOME_NAME',
  manufacturerData: [{
    key: 17,
    data: 'AP8BAX8=',
  }],
  knownServiceUuids: ['12345678-1234-5678-9abc-def123456789'],
});

Use a peripheral object with the four documented fields: address, name, manufacturerData, and knownServiceUuids. The example’s values are illustrative; replace them with the device details your application expects. See the Puppeteer PreconnectedPeripheral reference and the BluetoothEmulation reference.

The API is documented as experimental. Puppeteer’s API pages currently show different version labels—25.3.0 for BluetoothEmulation and 25.11.0 for PreconnectedPeripheral—so check the API reference matching your installed Puppeteer version rather than assuming a minimum supported version for this method.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose simulation or real-device chooser automation

These approaches test different parts of a Web Bluetooth flow. A preconnected simulation gives a virtual peripheral for device behavior. Automating the chooser tests the prompt and selection flow and requires a real compatible Bluetooth device.

Test concern Preconnected simulation Chooser automation
Physical device dependency Uses a virtual peripheral. Requires a real compatible Bluetooth device.
Chooser interaction Models a peripheral already connected to the system; it is not the chooser flow. Exercises waiting for and selecting a device prompt.
Service and GATT behavior The DevTools Protocol offers additional emulation operations for services, characteristics, descriptors, advertisements, disconnections, and simulated operation responses. Check the Chromium protocol version you use for its exact methods. The cited chooser walkthrough focuses on selecting a real device; it does not establish equivalent virtual control over GATT outcomes.
Isolation and repeatability Can be repeatable without hardware, but state is tied to browser context in Chromium, so pages in one context may interfere. Depends on real hardware as well as the browser flow.

For chooser automation, Chrome for Developers’ guide says to register waitForDevicePrompt() before clicking the app control that calls navigator.bluetooth.requestDevice(), wait for a matching device, then call select(). That guide requires Puppeteer v21.4.0 or later and a real compatible Bluetooth device: Test Web Bluetooth with Puppeteer.

Test more than device presence

The Chrome DevTools Protocol’s BluetoothEmulation domain supports more than declaring a peripheral. It includes operations to add and remove services, characteristics, and descriptors; simulate advertisements and disconnections; and control simulated responses to GATT and characteristic or descriptor operations. These capabilities let a test cover data exchange and failure handling, not just whether an app can see a device. Confirm the method set in the protocol documentation against the Chromium version used by your test environment.

Isolate tests that need separate Bluetooth state

The Web Bluetooth specification calls for emulated adapters to be isolated per top-level navigable, but Puppeteer’s API documentation notes that Chromium’s current implementation is tied to browser context. Pages sharing one browser context can therefore interfere with one another’s Bluetooth emulation state. Use isolated browser contexts when tests need independent state, and validate the behavior against your pinned Puppeteer and Chromium versions. See the Puppeteer BluetoothEmulation notes.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a Bluetooth emulator, so it cannot replace the Puppeteer workflow above. If your separate task is capturing a webpage, one GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The method or types are missing: Bluetooth emulation is experimental, and the reference pages show differing version labels. Check the docs for your installed Puppeteer version and its matching Chromium build; do not assume the API exists in every version.
  • The app does not see the simulated peripheral: Follow the documented order by enabling the adapter with emulateAdapter('powered-on') before calling simulatePreconnectedPeripheral(). Confirm that the app is looking for the same service UUIDs and device details supplied in the peripheral object.
  • Tests affect each other: Pages in one browser context may share emulated Bluetooth state in Chromium. Put tests requiring independent state in isolated browser contexts.
  • The test needs chooser selection or real hardware behavior: A preconnected virtual peripheral does not exercise Chrome’s chooser. Use the real-device chooser workflow described in Chrome for Developers’ Puppeteer guide.
  • A GATT operation or failure case is unavailable: Check the BluetoothEmulation methods supported by the Chromium protocol version in use. The protocol documentation can evolve, so do not rely on a method without confirming its availability in that version.

Reliability and version considerations

Treat this as browser emulation rather than proof of compatibility with every physical peripheral. The Puppeteer API is experimental, and Chromium’s browser-context scoping can affect parallel tests. Pin Puppeteer and Chromium in the test environment, verify the API and protocol methods against those versions, and reserve real-device testing for chooser interaction or hardware integration that emulation cannot establish.
