If your phone suddenly has no service and you can’t receive bank login codes, contact your mobile carrier immediately through its official support channel and report a suspected SIM swap or number port. Then contact your bank using its official app, website, a statement, or the number on your card. Secure the number first, protect the bank account, and then check other accounts that may rely on your phone or email for recovery.
What to do first after a suspected SIM swap
- Call your carrier using an official channel. Tell the provider you suspect an unauthorized SIM change or number port and need to regain control of your number. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises customers to contact their cellular provider immediately to take back control of the number. Use the provider’s official website or app, or a support number from a bill or other trusted record.
- Contact your bank from a trusted device or channel. Use the bank’s official app or website, or call the number printed on your card or statement. Ask the fraud team to secure your access, review recent sign-ins and transactions, and explain how to report and dispute unauthorized activity. The FBI also recommends contacting financial institutions and placing an alert on accounts.
- Once you control the number, change passwords. Start with your email account and financial accounts. Review recovery phone numbers and email addresses, active sessions, connected devices, and recent account changes. Sign out unfamiliar sessions and remove unrecognized recovery methods or devices where the service allows.
- Report suspicious transactions and account changes promptly. Notify each affected financial institution through its official fraud-reporting channel. If personal or financial information may have been stolen, report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov to receive a recovery plan. The FBI directs victims of suspected SIM-swapping cybercrime to report it through IC3.
- Keep incident records, but don’t delay securing accounts to gather them. Save carrier notices, account alerts, transaction details, timestamps, and the case numbers provided by your carrier and bank. These details can help when reporting suspicious activity and following up.
How to tell whether your number may have been taken over
A SIM swap or port-out attack moves control of your phone number to a SIM or carrier account controlled by someone else. The attacker may then receive calls and SMS verification codes sent to that number and try to reset passwords or enter accounts that rely on it. A sudden loss of cellular service or an unexpected notice that a SIM was activated on another device can be a warning sign; neither alone confirms the cause.
A texted verification code is not proof that the person receiving it owns the account. If an attacker controls your number, the code may reach them instead of you. If you can’t receive a bank code, don’t keep relying on SMS as the only recovery route: contact the bank through a trusted channel and explain that your number may be compromised.

Protect other accounts after bank access is secured
Prioritize email because it may be used to reset passwords for financial and other accounts. Then review accounts that use your phone number for login, recovery, or alerts. Change any reused passwords to unique ones, check recent sign-ins and account activity, and remove unfamiliar recovery details or devices where possible. The FTC and FBI both advise changing passwords and checking for suspicious account activity.

Ask your bank what safeguards and recovery options it supports. The bank’s process is specific to that institution, so follow its instructions for securing access and reporting unauthorized transactions or changes. Keep the bank’s case number and note when you reported the incident.

The FTC recommends authenticator apps as safer against SIM swapping than texted codes and describes security keys as the strongest two-factor method it lists. Availability varies by account. Set a carrier-account PIN or password if your provider offers one, and ask what other account protections are available.

- Bank or financial account: Report unauthorized transactions or account changes directly to the institution using its official fraud channel, and ask how to proceed with its dispute process.
- Possible identity theft: Use IdentityTheft.gov for the FTC’s identity-theft reporting and recovery guidance.
- Suspected SIM-swap cybercrime: Submit a report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Keep relevant alerts, dates, transaction details, and case numbers.
The FBI Las Vegas Field Office reported that complaints to IC3 in the prior year included more than 1,650 SIM-swap victims and over $86 million in losses. Those figures appeared in an October 21, 2022 notice and are a dated, complaint-based snapshot—not a current national rate or total.
