A voltage comparator compares two analog inputs and changes its output between two states according to which input is higher. In a typical signal chain, a sensor signal goes to one input, a reference voltage goes to the other, and the output tells a logic input or control stage whether the signal is above or below a threshold. In practice, the trip point, input range, output interface, and switching time all depend on the specific device and circuit.

How a comparator makes a threshold decision

A comparator has two inputs, commonly labeled non-inverting (+) and inverting (−), plus an output. In the ideal model, the output changes state when the voltage difference between the inputs changes sign: V+ greater than V− produces one state, and V+ less than V− produces the other. The circuit’s polarity, supply, output type, and load determine which state appears as a logic high or low, so do not assume a universal output polarity. Analog Devices describes a comparator as producing a binary output based on which of two analog signals is higher: Selecting the Right Comparator.

A useful signal-chain sketch is:

Analog signal → comparator input
Reference voltage → other comparator input
Comparator output → logic input or control stage

This makes the comparator a threshold decision element. It is sometimes called a one-bit analog-to-digital converter because its output conveys one binary decision; it does not replace a multi-bit ADC when the application needs a numerical measurement over a range.

What sets the real switching threshold?

The ideal switching point occurs when the two input voltages are equal. A real comparator has input offset and other device-specific errors, so the actual trip point can differ from the intended reference. The datasheet’s offset specification and operating conditions matter when threshold accuracy is important; do not treat the ideal equality as a guaranteed physical trip voltage.

Hysteresis creates separate rising and falling trip points

A comparator with hysteresis has one threshold as the input rises and another as it falls. The difference between those thresholds is the hysteresis band. This separation helps when a slow or noisy input lingers near the threshold: without adequate hysteresis, small fluctuations can make the output switch repeatedly. Analog Devices explains external hysteresis using positive feedback and notes that circuit details depend on output structure: Adding Extra Hysteresis to Comparators.

Hysteresis is not automatically beneficial. A band that is too wide shifts the effective trip points away from the desired threshold. Choose it by balancing input noise, offset over temperature, acceptable threshold error, and response needs; calculate the feedback network for the comparator’s actual push-pull or open-drain/open-collector output.

Check the input range and output interface

Common-mode range is not the absolute maximum rating

Check that both inputs remain within the specified common-mode range at the actual supply voltage and operating conditions. The absolute maximum rating describes stress limits; it does not mean the comparator will operate correctly throughout that range. Analog Devices warns that a comparator may respond erroneously when its inputs exceed the specified common-mode range, even if they remain within the allowed signal range: AN-352: High-Speed Comparators Provide Many Useful Circuit Functions When Used Correctly.

Output type determines how a high state is produced

A push-pull output actively drives both high and low. An open-collector or open-drain output pulls low but needs an external pull-up resistor to create a high state. A pull-up can make it easier to interface with a different logic voltage, but the pull-up voltage, resistor value, output current, load, receiving input limits, and rise time all need to be compatible. See the onsemi LM393 datasheet and Analog Devices’ hysteresis guidance for example circuits. Never assume the output can safely drive a chosen logic rail without checking both devices’ ratings.

Understand propagation delay before relying on timing

Propagation delay is the time between an input crossing the transition point and the output actually switching. Analog Devices states: “Propagation delay is the time from when the input signal crosses the transition point to when the output of the comparator actually switches.” The delay is not instantaneous and depends on how it is specified and measured. Relevant conditions include input overdrive, supply voltage, output load and capacitance, common-mode voltage, input edge and polarity, and temperature. A typical delay is not automatically a guaranteed maximum; use the exact datasheet conditions and limits when building a timing budget. See Parameters that Affect Comparator Propagation Delay Measurements.

How to choose a comparator for a signal chain

There is no universal best comparator: the right part depends on the signal, timing, power, and interface requirements. Compare candidate devices on these points:

  • Input and supply compatibility: Confirm the common-mode range across the full supply and operating range.
  • Threshold accuracy: Check input offset and how it varies under the conditions that matter to the design.
  • Noise behavior: Determine whether the part includes hysteresis or whether external feedback is needed, and ensure the resulting band preserves required accuracy.
  • Timing: Compare propagation delay only under relevant, comparable overdrive, load, voltage, and temperature conditions.
  • Output interface: Identify push-pull versus open-drain/open-collector, pull-up requirements, output voltage and current limits, and logic compatibility.
  • System fit: Check supply current, package, temperature range, and whether an integrated reference or latch is useful.

Fast switching and low power can involve trade-offs. Comparator selection guidance from Analog Devices covers operating behavior and output variants: Selecting the Right Comparator.

Comparator IC or op amp in open loop?

An op amp is primarily designed for linear operation with feedback; a comparator is designed to make a switching decision. Some op amps can be used open-loop, but their input common-mode limits, output behavior, and recovery from saturation may not suit the application. A dedicated comparator is the safer starting point when switching performance or interface behavior matters, while still requiring checks against the exact datasheet.

Analog Devices frames the common question directly: “Why can’t I just use a standard op amp in a high-gain or open-loop configuration as a voltage comparator?” Its AN-352 application note discusses the practical differences and cautions.

Examples: LM393 and microcontroller comparators

LM393 dual comparator

The onsemi LM393 is an example of a dual comparator with an open-collector output; its datasheet includes application circuits, including hysteresis. It illustrates the need to plan the pull-up and check the intended circuit rather than serving as a blanket recommendation. Before selecting a listing, verify the package, pinout, supply and input limits, output arrangement, and exact datasheet revision: LM393 datasheet.

Comparator peripheral inside a microcontroller

A microcontroller may include a comparator as a configurable peripheral. Microchip’s SAM L10/L11 documentation describes configurable hysteresis and propagation delay, as well as a window mode that checks whether a signal lies within a voltage range: SAM L10/L11 comparator documentation. Available pins, reference options, timing, and operating limits are specific to the microcontroller.

A simple way to observe comparator behavior

  1. Choose a comparator and read its datasheet for supply, input common-mode, and output requirements.
  2. With current limiting and the correct supply, connect a stable reference to one input and a slowly rising and falling test signal to the other, keeping both within the specified operating range.
  3. Observe the output with a suitable logic input or scope. For an open-collector/open-drain part, provide a compatible pull-up before expecting a high output.
  4. Add positive feedback only after establishing the basic threshold circuit. Observe the rising and falling transitions to see how hysteresis separates the trip points, while ensuring the band is appropriate for the intended threshold accuracy.

Follow the selected device’s ratings and application guidance; this demonstration describes a method, not a reported bench test.
