A Bode plot shows how a circuit or system responds as signal frequency changes. It normally has two curves: magnitude, often expressed as gain in decibels, and phase, expressed in degrees. Both use a logarithmic frequency axis. Engineers use this view to examine amplifier bandwidth and frequency response; in feedback systems, a separate loop-gain Bode plot helps assess stability.

What a Bode plot shows

A Bode plot represents a system’s frequency response with magnitude and phase plotted against frequency. The horizontal axis is logarithmic: equal distances represent equal frequency ratios, such as a decade, rather than equal increments in hertz. Magnitude is commonly shown in decibels (dB), while phase is shown in degrees. Analog Devices’ LTspice Bode plot tutorial illustrates the two curves with a second-order low-pass filter.

For a sinusoidal input at a chosen frequency, the magnitude curve indicates how much the circuit amplifies or attenuates the signal. The phase curve indicates the output’s phase shift relative to the input. Read both curves at the same frequency to understand the response there.

How to read the curves

Magnitude: gain, attenuation, and bandwidth

Magnitude reveals how response changes across frequency. It can show the passband, gain roll-off, resonant peaks, and the frequency range over which an amplifier or circuit provides useful gain. A pole typically changes the magnitude slope; a zero can change it in the opposite direction. The exact curve depends on the circuit’s transfer function and the conventions used to define and measure the response.

Phase: relative timing

Phase describes how the output sinusoid is shifted relative to the input. It changes with frequency as poles and zeros affect the response. Phase is especially important in feedback analysis, where it must be considered alongside gain rather than treated as a separate decorative curve.

Combining cascaded stages

When circuit blocks are cascaded, their transfer functions multiply. On a Bode plot, this becomes addition of their magnitude responses in dB, while their phase shifts also add. This makes it practical to understand how several stages together shape a signal path.

Why engineers use Bode plots

Amplifier frequency response

For an amplifier, a frequency-response Bode plot can reveal closed-loop bandwidth, gain roll-off, peaking, and phase behavior. Texas Instruments’ operational-amplifier applications handbook covers Bode plots as a way to represent circuit frequency response. Open-loop magnitude and phase plots can also help derive gain and phase margins, but feedback components and parasitics affect the result. A Texas Instruments current-feedback amplifier application report discusses that analysis; the report is marked obsolete, so its specific recommendations should be treated as historical guidance rather than universal current rules.

Feedback-loop stability

In a regulated power supply or other feedback system, engineers may plot loop gain rather than the ordinary input-to-output response. The gain crossover frequency is where loop-gain magnitude reaches unity, or 0 dB. Phase margin is assessed from the phase at that crossover relative to the −180-degree condition. Gain margin is another stability measure derived from loop gain. These are specialized interpretations of a loop-gain plot, not properties that can be read from every general frequency-response plot.

Margins require context. In an Analog Devices control-loop example published in July 2026, the illustrated power-supply case has a crossover near 100 kHz and phase margin near 59 degrees; those are values for that example, not recommended targets for all systems. The article’s discussion of crossover relative to switching frequency is likewise a context-dependent rule of thumb, not a universal power-system standard. See Analog Devices’ control-loop Bode diagram article.

A single clean crossover makes basic margin readings more straightforward. With multiple crossings or unusual unit-circle interactions, simple Bode-margin readings can mislead; fuller stability analysis may be needed. Analog Devices discusses these complications in its article on stability analysis with multiple crossings.

Frequency response and transient tests answer different questions

A load-step or other transient test shows how a system behaves over time after a disturbance. A loop-gain plot shows gain and phase across frequency and can expose margin information that is not directly visible in a simple transient trace. They provide different evidence; neither is a universal replacement for the other.

Simulation versus physical loop measurement

Generate a response in simulation

AC simulation is a common way to produce a circuit frequency response. In LTspice, an AC analysis can generate magnitude and phase plots for a modeled circuit; Analog Devices demonstrates the workflow with a low-pass filter in its LTspice tutorial. The setup depends on the model and on whether the goal is a closed-loop transfer response or open-loop/loop-gain analysis.

Measure loop gain on hardware

Physical loop-gain measurement generally involves injecting a small AC signal at a suitable point in the feedback path, then measuring signals on each side to derive gain and phase. The injection point, feedback path, signal level, and sensing arrangement must suit the actual circuit. A procedure for one topology may not transfer directly to another: an Analog Devices LED-driver article, for example, notes that its circuit calls for a different approach from a conventional voltage-regulator setup. A network analyzer or similar frequency-response instrument can be relevant, but instrument choice alone does not determine a valid measurement; the circuit-specific setup matters.
