Use aws login to start AWS’s browser-based sign-in for terminal use. It creates temporary credentials for AWS CLI and supported SDK operations; it does not directly open the signed-in AWS Management Console interface. You need AWS CLI version 2.32.0 or later. AWS’s sign-in guide says the command opens your default browser and guides you through authentication.
Use aws login for console credentials
Open a terminal and run:
aws login
Complete sign-in in the browser that opens, then return to the terminal. This flow is for people who can sign in to the AWS Management Console as a root user, IAM user, or through IAM federation. AWS CLI must be version 2.32.0 or later. For IAM users, roles, or groups, AWS requires the SignInLocalDevelopmentAccess managed policy; root users do not need that policy. See the AWS CLI sign-in documentation.
Choose a profile or Region
To use a named profile, add --profile:
aws login --profile my-dev-profile
You can also specify a Region with --region <region>. These options configure which profile or Region the command uses; they do not change the browser-based nature of sign-in.

When the terminal cannot open a browser
Use remote authentication:
aws login --remote
Complete the browser sign-in on another device, then enter the authorization code in the CLI. This is useful when the terminal is on a machine without a browser or cannot launch one.

Use IAM Identity Center if your organization uses SSO
IAM Identity Center has its own CLI authentication flow. Configure the SSO profile, then sign in with it:
aws configure sso
aws sso login --profile my-profile
During setup, provide your organization’s start URL or issuer URL and the Region that hosts its Identity Center directory. The CLI opens a browser for authorization. AWS CLI 2.22.0 and later uses PKCE by default for this flow; add --use-device-code if you need device authorization instead. After sign-in, the profile uses its cached session to obtain credentials for the role assigned to you. See AWS’s IAM Identity Center configuration guide.

Know what happens after sign-in
With aws login, the sign-in session is valid for up to 12 hours, subject to the session duration configured for the IAM principal. The CLI and supported SDKs can refresh cached credentials while the session remains active. Once it expires, authenticate again. To remove cached credentials, run aws logout; to target one profile, use aws logout --profile my-dev-profile. These commands manage terminal credentials, not the browser’s console session. Details are in the AWS CLI documentation.

CloudShell is an AWS browser-based shell, not a local terminal command for opening the console. AWS’s getting-started process is to sign in to the Management Console, select a Region, and launch CloudShell from the console interface. Follow the CloudShell getting-started guide if you want a shell hosted by AWS rather than terminal access on your own machine.
