To show formulas in every worksheet cell, press Ctrl+` (Ctrl plus the grave-accent key). Press it again to return to calculated results. You can also choose Formulas > Show Formulas.
Show all formulas with the keyboard shortcut
In desktop Excel, open the worksheet and press Ctrl+`. Excel switches the worksheet cells from calculated results to their formulas. Press the same shortcut again to switch back.
The grave-accent key is often near the upper-left corner of a keyboard, but its location can vary by layout. Microsoft documents this shortcut for Windows desktop Excel versions Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019, and Excel 2016: Microsoft’s instructions for showing and printing formulas.

Use the ribbon if the shortcut is hard to find
Select Formulas > Show Formulas. This ribbon control turns formula display on or off just like the shortcut, and is a practical alternative when the grave-accent key is difficult to locate.
What changes when formulas are shown?
This is a worksheet-wide display switch: it shows formulas throughout the current worksheet rather than only for the selected cell. It changes what appears in the cells, not the underlying calculations. Use the toggle again to return to the usual results view.

Excel for Mac
Microsoft documents Ctrl+` and the Formulas > Show Formulas control for Excel for Mac. Keyboard shortcuts can vary with language settings and keyboard layout, so use the ribbon if the key combination is inconvenient. Excel for the web
In Excel for the web, worksheet cells display calculated results while the formula bar shows the selected cell’s formula. To display formulas in worksheet cells and print them, open the workbook in the desktop app, as Microsoft describes in its Excel formula-display instructions.

If formulas still are not visible
- Check the Show Formulas setting. The workbook’s view settings may affect whether formulas or results are displayed. Toggle the setting with the shortcut or the Formulas ribbon control. Microsoft’s Display or hide formulas guidance covers formula visibility.
- Check sheet or workbook protection. Protection can prevent formula visibility or changes to display settings. If you have authorization, unprotect the sheet or workbook; a password may be required. Do not try to bypass protection.
