Keep the Category dropdown visible, then reveal or populate a labeled Subcategory dropdown when the selected category has child options. Update it on the page without submitting the form or moving focus; if the category has no children, clear and hide or disable the dependent control.
How the dependent dropdown should work
The Category select is the trigger; the Subcategory select depends on its value. Place the Subcategory control immediately after Category in the page’s reading and DOM order. When the user changes Category, update the child options locally. W3C’s SCR19 technique describes using a select’s change event to update other page elements and recommends placing the modified select after its trigger so assistive technologies encounter the updated control when they reach it.
Changing a selection should not automatically submit the form, navigate, open a window, or unexpectedly move focus. WCAG’s On Input guidance lists SCR19 as a sufficient technique when an input change does not cause a change of context. If choosing a category must cause navigation or submission, explain that behavior before the control and provide an explicit action, such as a Submit or Apply button.
Build the controls and update matching options
Give both selects explicit labels and an initial prompt. The example uses embedded child-option data for immediate updates; replace the sample category names and values with the options for your form.

</script>The wrapping element’s hidden attribute keeps the child control out of view and out of the active form when no options are available; disabling it also prevents interaction. On each change, the script replaces the old options, adds a prompt, appends only options for the selected category, and resets the value. That reset prevents an earlier child choice from being submitted for a different parent.
Choose whether to reveal, disable, or fetch options
Reveal or disable the child select
Reveal the Subcategory select only when the chosen category has children to reduce visual clutter. Alternatively, keep its location visible but disable it until it applies; this preserves a more stable layout. Whichever approach you choose, make its current state clear and clear its value when the parent changes. Do not rely on hiding alone if your form logic could still submit a stale value.

Use embedded data or a server request
Embedded data is a good fit when the child options are already available and reasonably small. For a large or frequently changing taxonomy, a server request can provide the children on demand. In that case, account for loading and error states and make status changes available to keyboard and screen-reader users. SCR19’s example assumes the needed data is already available in the page.
Update immediately or require an Apply action
Update immediately when the change only alters the available child options. Use a clearly labeled button when proceeding would submit, navigate, or otherwise change the user’s context; the button makes that action explicit.

Label and test the interaction accessibly
- Associate a visible label with each select. W3C’s form-labeling tutorial requires labels for form controls, including drop-down menus, and notes that
display: noneandvisibility: hiddenhide content from screen readers and other assistive technology. - Use prompt text as an option, not as a substitute for a label. W3C’s instructions tutorial explains that placeholder text does not replace labels and that required, optional, and format instructions must be conveyed accessibly.
- Test the form using the keyboard and a screen reader. Confirm the Subcategory select is discoverable after changing Category, the matching options are announced or available when the user reaches it, and focus stays where the user expects.
- Verify all branches: the initial empty category, a category with children, a category without children, and a change from one populated category to another. Check that no obsolete child value remains selected or is submitted.
