There is no single right sleeping spot for every dog. Bed-sharing can work when you and your dog both sleep comfortably and there are no relevant health or behavior concerns. A dog bed in your bedroom offers closeness without sharing the mattress; a crate can help with safe management if your dog has been introduced to it positively and stays comfortable inside.
Should my dog sleep in my bed?
It can be a reasonable household choice if both of you rest well and your dog does not guard the bed or a person. Veterinary behaviorist Nicholas H. Dodman of Tufts says there is no reason most dogs should not sleep in their owners’ beds when both prefer the arrangement (Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, August 19, 2021). Bed access is not a dominance test; the old claim that it makes a dog dominant over people relies on an outdated framing.
Your sleep matters too. A 2017 Mayo Clinic Proceedings study monitored 40 healthy adults without sleep disorders and their dogs for seven nights. Human sleep efficiency was lower when the dog was on the bed than when the dog was only in the room (P=.003). The study was small and limited to healthy adults and dogs at least six months old, so it does not establish that bed-sharing harms everyone’s sleep. Its reported average sleep efficiencies—81% for people and 85% for dogs—describe that study sample, not universal targets (study indexed by PubMed).
When the bed may not be a good fit
- Guarding or startle-biting: A dog that guards the bed or a person, or bites when startled awake, should sleep elsewhere while you seek veterinary or qualified behavior guidance. VCA advises against bed access for dogs with forceful guarding until the behavior is addressed (VCA Animal Hospitals, “Should My Dog Sleep in My Bed?”).
- Allergies or infection vulnerability: Dander, pollen, dust, fleas, ticks, and some intestinal parasites can matter, especially around very young, older, or immunocompromised people. Discuss parasite prevention with your dog’s veterinarian.
- Mobility or pain: Climbing onto and off a bed may be difficult for a dog with musculoskeletal problems or for an older dog. Steps or a ramp may help some dogs; a supportive bed on the floor may be safer for others.
- Interrupted rest: Movement, snoring, overheating, or a dog changing position may disrupt either sleeper. If either of you is not resting comfortably, choose another surface.
Should my dog sleep in my room?
A separate dog bed in your bedroom is a practical middle option: your dog stays nearby without being on the mattress. A ground-level bed can also avoid the need to climb. Some dogs prefer a cool floor or move between sleeping places during the night, so observe where your dog settles rather than assuming one surface suits every dog.

The Mayo Clinic Proceedings study found a difference based on where the dog slept: human sleep efficiency was lower with the dog on the bed than with the dog in the room. That finding is limited to the study’s 40 healthy adult participants, their dogs, and seven nights of monitoring; it does not guarantee how any particular household will sleep (Mayo Clinic Proceedings study, 2017).
Should my dog sleep in a crate?
A crate is a management tool, not a universal sleeping requirement. With gradual, positive introduction, it can give a dog a familiar resting place and help prevent unsupervised damage. Crates may also be useful for house-training, travel, hospitalization, or emergencies. They are not suitable for every dog: do not make confinement the default when a dog shows significant distress.

Choose a crate that fits the dog and the intended use
Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center says a dog should be able to stand without ducking, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Consider the dog’s size, chewing behavior, durability needs, and whether the crate will be moved or used for travel (Cornell, “Dog crates: When to use them and how to pick one”).
- Wire: Often foldable, and a divider can adjust a larger crate as a puppy grows.
- Plastic: Solid walls may suit some uses, but these crates can be cumbersome to store.
- Fabric or mesh: May suit some travel or short-term situations, but may not withstand puppies or dogs that chew.
A cover is optional. Cornell advises leaving one or two sides open if you cover the crate. If your dog does not tolerate a crate, a pen, dog run, small room, or safely barricaded area may be a better option.

Introduce the crate gradually
- Make the crate inviting with treats, toys, and suitable bedding; let your dog explore it without being forced inside.
- Build positive associations and increase the time inside gradually, following your dog’s comfort rather than rushing to overnight confinement. VCA’s guide describes crate-training approaches (VCA, “How to Crate Train Your Dog,” edited July 22, 2019).
- Meet exercise and bathroom needs before and after confinement. Do not use the crate as punishment or leave a dog confined for extended periods without opportunities for natural behaviors.
- Observe your dog’s response. If distress appears, stop treating the crate as the solution and consider a safer alternative.
How to tell whether the arrangement is working
A dog who settles and sleeps comfortably is responding differently from one in distress. Cornell says a dog should never be forced to remain crated alone when excessively barking or vocalizing, pacing, panting, eliminating, or drooling. Crate destruction, panic, or self-injury also warrant a change of plan. Persistent or severe distress calls for a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional, not simply longer confinement.
Do not assume that sleeping in a human bed causes separation anxiety, or that a crate cures it. For dogs that panic when crated, AAHA’s case guidance discusses alternatives such as a pet sitter, home day care, or hospital boarding for observation and protection (AAHA, “Sample case: canine separation anxiety,” May 10, 2019).
