For most people with an up-to-date PC and a compatible infrared camera, Windows Hello face recognition is a reasonable everyday sign-in option. Microsoft says the face profile is stored on the device rather than sent to apps or websites, and you can still use your PIN if the camera is unavailable. It is not a universal security guarantee: check your hardware, keep Windows updated, and use a PIN or fingerprint instead if you would rather not enroll biometric data.

How Windows Hello face recognition works

Windows Hello Face uses a compatible near-infrared (IR) camera to detect facial landmarks, check that you are oriented toward the sensor, and create a representation from sampled facial features. It compares that representation with the profiles enrolled on the device. Microsoft says the system does not store an actual face image; its documentation describes the stored data as a device-specific, encrypted template that does not roam to other devices or get sent to websites or applications. These are Microsoft’s descriptions of the design, not an independent security audit. Microsoft’s Windows Hello face authentication documentation explains the process.

Microsoft says IR imaging can provide more consistent input across lighting conditions than ordinary visible-light camera recognition and helps deter accessible presentation attempts, such as showing a photo or an image on a screen. That is a design goal, not proof that every spoofing attempt or device compromise will fail. Microsoft also describes an orientation check of approximately ±15 degrees and authentication averaging under two seconds in its documented Windows 11 scenarios; those product-design figures are not independent performance measurements across all PCs.

What you need before enabling it

  • A compatible IR camera. A regular webcam alone is not enough. The camera can be built into the PC or external, but compatibility varies by model and configuration. Microsoft states, “Signing in with your face requires a Hello-compatible camera.” Check Microsoft’s Windows Hello setup guidance.
  • A Windows Hello PIN. Setup includes a PIN, which remains available when a biometric gesture or sensor cannot be used. The PIN is associated with that device, rather than being a password that you reuse across sites.
  • Current Windows updates. Microsoft has documented a camera-related Windows Hello face-authentication bypass involving replayed images in affected Windows 10 configurations (CVE-2021-34466) and points to the July 13, 2021 security update. That historical fix is not a substitute for installing current updates. Microsoft’s update notice describes the issue and update.

Face, fingerprint, or PIN: which should you choose?

Sign-in option Hardware needed Practical trade-off
Face Compatible IR camera Hands-free sign-in; requires compatible camera hardware and biometric enrollment.
Fingerprint Compatible fingerprint reader Biometric alternative if a reader is present; enrollment is optional.
PIN No biometric sensor Non-biometric sign-in option and fallback; the Hello PIN is associated with the device.

Choose face recognition if you value quick, hands-free sign-in and are comfortable enrolling a biometric profile. Choose fingerprint if your PC has a reader and that gesture suits you better. Choose PIN if you do not want biometric enrollment or lack a compatible sensor. Windows lists these options under Sign-in options. Microsoft’s setup instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11; exact screens can vary with your installed version.

Security protections—and their limits

Windows Hello combines a device-bound credential with a PIN or biometric gesture. In Microsoft’s documented Windows Hello for Business threat model, an attacker attempting to compromise a TPM-protected credential needs physical access and must defeat the biometric or guess the PIN before TPM anti-hammering protection locks the device. This describes that threat model; it does not establish that every PC has identical hardware protections or configuration. Microsoft’s Windows Hello for Business FAQ provides further detail.

Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS) uses hardware and software protections, including Virtualization Based Security and TPM 2.0, to add protection to biometric data. There is a compatibility trade-off: Microsoft says external camera modules are not supported when ESS is enabled. If you plan to add an external IR camera, verify compatibility with your specific PC and its ESS configuration before buying. Microsoft’s guidance on third-party readers and cameras covers this limitation.

For a camera shutter, Microsoft says Windows Hello Face uses both RGB and IR streams for anti-spoofing. On a multi-camera panel, a shutter should cover all cameras; covering only one can leave another exposed and create a false sense of privacy. This camera-design detail does not mean Hello secretly records you. Microsoft’s driver guidance on camera privacy shutters explains the streams involved.

How to set up Windows Hello Face

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  2. Select Facial recognition (Windows Hello) and follow the setup prompts. If prompted, create or enter your Windows Hello PIN.
  3. If the facial-recognition option is unavailable, check whether your PC has a compatible IR camera and whether its configuration supports Windows Hello. Use the fingerprint or PIN option in the same area if available.

For an external camera, check both Windows Hello compatibility and the ESS limitation before connecting or purchasing it.

Should you enable it?

Enable Windows Hello Face if your PC has a compatible IR camera, you prefer hands-free sign-in, and you are comfortable with a biometric profile stored locally on the device. Keep Windows updated and retain your PIN as a fallback. If you do not want biometric enrollment, or your hardware or configuration does not support it, use a PIN or fingerprint sign-in instead.

Microsoft’s public documentation does not establish a generalizable error-rate study or independent comparison across camera models. It is therefore not possible to give a reliable accuracy percentage for every PC; results and compatibility can depend on the device and its configuration.
