For most trips, take your everyday phone—provided it is updated, protected with a strong passcode, backed up, and ready for the destination’s service requirements. A separate, minimally configured travel phone can be useful if you have a specific reason to limit the data you carry or want a backup in case your main phone is lost. It adds setup and access challenges, however, and does not prevent a device from being inspected at a border.
Everyday phone or burner phone: what is the practical difference?
In this context, a “burner phone” means a separate phone used for the trip, ideally with only the accounts and information you need while away. It need not be disposable. A second phone is only meaningfully different from your everyday phone if it contains less sensitive data or serves as a backup; buying another handset alone does not make travel safer.
| Consideration | Everyday phone | Separate travel phone |
|---|---|---|
| Data exposure | May contain personal, work, and account information accumulated over time. | Can carry less information if deliberately configured that way; it is not inherently secure. |
| Trip convenience | Usually already has your travel apps, maps, photos, messaging, banking, and accessibility settings. | Requires setup and may not have your usual apps, history, or settings. |
| Loss or theft | Loss can expose accounts and disrupt access to services you rely on. | Can provide a communications backup, but is another device to protect. |
| Accounts and authentication | Often already signed in and able to receive account codes. | May make sign-in, two-factor authentication, and account recovery harder unless planned in advance. |
| Cost and upkeep | No second handset or separate setup is needed. | Adds the cost and effort of a device, service, charging, accounts, and maintenance; the amount depends on your choices. |
When should you take your everyday phone?
It is generally the simpler choice when you need reliable access to airline or hotel details, tickets, maps, banking, family messages, an authenticator, or assistive settings. It also avoids having to establish a new device and account workflow just before a trip.
That convenience is a good trade when the information on the phone is appropriate to carry and you can reduce avoidable risk: install updates, back up important information, use a strong screen lock, and remove material you do not need if doing so makes sense for you. The U.S. State Department’s communications-abroad guidance, last updated May 8, 2026, recommends checking service options, securing devices, and saving emergency contacts. CISA likewise recommends updates, backups, strong PINs or passwords, and protecting devices from theft in its travel advice for internet-enabled devices.

When does a separate travel phone make sense?
Consider a separate phone if you have a concrete reason to carry less personal or work information, or if having a spare would materially help you stay in contact after losing your primary device. The State Department’s general travel page also suggests considering a backup device in case of loss or theft.
An older State Department/FBI student-travel brochure, Safety and Security for U.S. Students Traveling Abroad, advises: “If feasible, use a different phone and a new email account while traveling.” It also recommends removing sensitive contact, research, or personal data. This is older, general advice aimed at students—not a universal instruction for tourists or a guarantee that a second phone is safer. A minimally provisioned phone still needs current software, a strong lock, and careful handling.

Will a burner phone prevent a border inspection?
No. Carrying a different phone does not establish immunity from inspection. U.S. Customs and Border Protection says all travelers crossing the U.S. border are subject to inspection and that officers may search electronic devices on rare occasions during inspection. That statement does not predict what will happen in an individual encounter. It is not a substitute for checking the rules and obtaining qualified advice if your circumstances raise a specific legal concern.

Prepare whichever phone you take
If you take your everyday phone
- Update its operating system and apps before departure, and back up information you may need.
- Set a strong PIN or password, enable device tracking, and keep the phone physically secure.
- Remove data that is not needed for the trip where appropriate; save emergency numbers and embassy or consulate contact details.
- Check roaming, coverage, and whether your phone is unlocked and compatible with local networks. The State Department notes that some countries require ID to register a local SIM, so check local rules and carrier options before leaving.
- Avoid banking or shopping on open public Wi-Fi. CISA advises using cellular data if a sensitive transaction cannot wait; verify hotspot details before connecting, turn Bluetooth off when you are not using it, and avoid public computers or charging stations you do not control.
If you take a separate phone
- Choose only the accounts and information you genuinely need, then configure emergency contacts, maps, travel documents, and communication before departure.
- Test how you will sign in to essential accounts and receive verification codes without relying on the everyday phone.
- Confirm the device is unlocked if needed, compatible with local networks, and able to obtain service through your carrier, a local SIM, or an eSIM. Check destination rules and provider coverage.
- Install current software, set a strong screen lock, back up what you need, and keep the device secure. A smaller set of data does not remove ordinary device-security risks.
Make the choice based on your trip
Ask what information you need, what losing the phone would disrupt, and whether you can reliably access essential accounts on a new device. If a second phone solves a specific data-exposure or backup problem and you can set it up without losing critical access, it may be worthwhile. If it mainly adds complexity while your everyday phone can be prepared appropriately, take the everyday phone.
