Compare his upside and risk of being inactive or limited with the healthy backup’s likely role and floor, then make the call before your league’s lineup deadline.
What a Questionable tag means
The NFL defines Questionable as meaning it is uncertain whether a player will play in the game. The same policy defines Doubtful as unlikely to participate and Out as not participating. The designation alone does not establish whether the quarterback will be active or how much he would play.
How to compare the two quarterbacks
Check the questionable quarterback’s status and role
Use the latest available game-status information, then consider whether he could be limited even if active. Availability and fantasy value are separate questions: an active player may still carry role uncertainty.
Assess the backup’s likely workload
Healthy only describes availability; it does not guarantee a secure role or make the backup the better fantasy choice. Consider how likely he is to play and what his expected opportunity looks like.

Weigh upside against the cost of a zero
Compare the questionable player’s potential production with the chance he is inactive or limited, and set that against the backup’s expected floor and role certainty. How much risk to accept depends on your situation: a volatile outcome may be tolerable for one roster and costly for another. There is no universal formula.
Use matchup as a tiebreaker
When the availability and role comparison is close, consider the matchup as well. NFL.com’s 2026 Week 1 quarterback start/sit column describes its focus as fringe choices evaluated through player outlook and matchup context. Its specific player recommendations apply to that week, not to a different slate.

When to make the decision
Check your platform’s actual lineup deadline and the kickoff time for the relevant game. Under the NFL Fantasy Official Rules 2025, player status can be changed only before that player’s NFL team is scheduled to start, according to NFL.com’s clock. Other platforms and custom league settings may differ, so confirm your own rules rather than assuming the same lock applies.
If your lineup must lock before you can get better availability information, choose based on the uncertainty you can afford. Do not treat Questionable as a guarantee that the player will be active or rely on an unsupported probability.

What information is needed for a specific recommendation?
A player-specific call depends on which quarterbacks are involved, the week and matchup, your scoring format, your platform’s lock rules, and your roster situation. Without those details, the sound approach is to compare role certainty, expected opportunity, upside, downside, and the deadline—not to name a universal starter.
